Just moved to Oakland after living in China for the past 6 years. Totally new to California, and I'm looking for ideas for some quick adventures to keep me busy between teaching gigs. The ideal criteria I'm looking for would be:

-Door to Door from Oakland 24-72 hour mission - 48 ideal
-Peaks/Summits/Top-outs are preferred though not mandatory
-Fast and Light
-Easily done solo

I'm was thinking along the lines of easily accessible trailheads, 4th/5th class ridge traverses, some ropework required but not hugely technical.

Let me know what you think

A suggestion is to get a copy of R. J. Secor's book "Peaks, passes and trails".

edit: also pick up the DeLorme atlases for northern and southern California for a topographical overview.

Welcome to CA and the Sierra Nevada
48 hour round trip? A dozen good ones, mostly in Yosemite. Tuolumne Mdws is 4+ hours from Oakland.....IF you can get ahead of the afternoon traffic. Which is really offal on Fridays. (not a typo)

72 hours. Now you're talking about 50 good ones. Good peaks up each fork of the San Joaquin plus the "East Side" from Ritter/Banner to Bishop Creek.
Depending on what level you're able to safely solo! And how fast you can march.

As recommended above: Secor is essential.
DeLorme atlases are great for showing you how to get there.
And then of course the (nearly) obligatory USGS maps. Which you can download online for free and print yourself or purchase online.

it's amazing how quickly you get used to 5-6 hour drives every friday evening

take a good look at the trinity alps in norcal

lake tahoe wilderness area too

you also have alpine peaks like lassen and shasta up north

there are great peaks just outside of Tuolomne meadows- matthes crest, etc.

sawtooth ridge in northern yosemite (out of bridgeport on 395) gives out quick and easy approaches and summits, and can be reached from northern passes (donner, etc.)

The Tuolumne area and "high country" not far from the road will blow yer mind with its beauty, accessibility and alpine-ness. Black coffee in your veins, tunes on the drive in and weekend stoke will fuel you and help you break the inertia of the city.

Matthes Crest

Tenaya Peak

Anything on Conness

Mt Dana

Unicorn Peak

Echo Peaks

Cathedral Peak

Adventure awaits....oh the places you'll go.

I would think that there are hardly any moderately technical routes in CA that you couldn't do in 72 hrs from SF if you know where you are going and can keep moving that long. Or, to put it another way, you won't run out of projects any time soon.

Bob Burd does a lot of those scrambles. There are several that can be done right in Yosemite Valley - old abandoned trails. Check out his website:

+1 for Bob Burd's site. I participated in his Sierra Challenge event in 2010 and had a blast.
Any CA peak could be done in under 48 Oakland to Oakland. Get the Secor guide, research on Summitpost and here. A LOT TO DO.

If you have not scrambled in CA I would suggest East ridge of Russell, East ridge of Carl Heller, N Face of Mt. Abbot, East Face of Middle Palisade, East or West couloir on Matterhron peak, NW arête of Haeckel, something on Mt. Darwin, and Rock Route on Clyde Minaret for starters.
