How much volunteer time is expected to get a campsite (in other words how much time will I actually get to climb if I go to this thing?)

There's no time to climb for you.

You must work hard from sun up till sundown.

Then for dinner you get a thin gruel soup.

Then back to work scrubbing and mopping the valley floor all night to make it shiny and clean for the tourists ......

HDDJ, I think it's 1 day volunteer, 1 day off. But I could be wrong....

2 days camping to one working.

HDDJ: How much volunteer time is expected to get a campsite (in other words how much time will I actually get to climb if I go to this thing?)

It is entirely on the honour system, unless there's a change from the practice of the last seven years. In exchange for free camping, people are expected to make a significant contribution to the well-being of Yosemite National Park - within their abilities and means, of course. Not everyone can be a Stakhanovite like Ken or jstan. Usually there's a bit of peer pressure, especially for those camping with other FaceLifters. And there are lots of different ways to help, not just picking up garbage, trail and habitat work, and so on.

My rough rule of thumb is that in exchange for the free camping, draw prizes, evening programs and lots of fun, participants ought to contribute at least a half day helping in some way for each day they're there. And helping can mean a lot of things - sometimes it can mean thoroughly cleaning up the parking area, trail to a climb, the climb, and the descent therefrom - and incidentally doing the climb. That is, if the area needs to be cleaned.

Of course, if you're naughty, we'll send you over to Werner for some re-education. :)

Also, if you're there for the FaceLift, especially for those staying in Camp 4, it's simple to extend your stay afterward, at the usual $5/night. No waiting in line.

jstan: delighted to hear that PT will be gracing us with her presence at the FaceLift. There's more than enough room for three people and gear in my car, coming up from Modesto.

Anders, really good reference, but a little overhead for most.

"The Stakhanovite movement was named after Aleksei Stakhanov, who had mined 102 tons of coal in less than 6 hours (14 times his quota)."--WikiP

I will wait till after Comrade Mo is back in front of her "work station" to send in my request.

Murcy, thanks for that video recording, too.

I'll think I'll coordinate a Saturday night 'fest' for chow. Either FISH SuperTacos, or a meat-fest.

Lots of time to figure it out....

Thank you Mighty Hiker for that post. These are great guidelines and Anders put it much more eloquently that I would have.

PS: I say Give Bluey to Upper Pines. We could use a good barbeque-slave.
