I went over to summitpost and its almost dead. It's not as bad as rockclimbing.com yet, but it's close. What happened?

There really is no need to moderate a forum/website if you require that people who post up use their real names. That's a quick and easy solution.

BTW, 'bhilden' = Bruce Hildenbrand - was the Login ID at my first ever computer job.

There are quite a few deleted pages, also. Many of the links come up with a "page deleted" notification.

You use your ice axe in the system

specifically you tie your rope to the ice axe and hurl it up towards the stake until it catches and you can pull it down

To answer the secondary question, you attach a prussik mid shaft with a separate line attached.

Anyways, it has gotten a little dead over there. Some people got pissed at the moderation and left, taking their pages with them, which kind of sucked. The Chief was a frequent and welcome contributor, particularly when it came to providing recent condition updates for places like the Eastside, but as most on this site know it sometimes came with alot of opinion attached. Didn't bother me but it did the moderators. There are still people on the site making frequent and helpful posts, but it does seem not as relevant at times.

Lots of good stuff on there but after getting told that a tr has to be be this way or that way and others counting up high points of Midwestern states there is a lot of garbage. I put some stuff up on ambush in the winds and one of the "big" posters there chewed me out for not enough detail. I started looking at his stuff and it was all hiking. I started giving all his stuff zeros and he sent me an email saying he was sorry for being rude and begged me not to downrate his stuff. What difference it makes I have no idea but that is when I started seeing how sad the place is. Another friend had tons of great pictures stories and articles and deleted the whole lot after deciding it was a pathetic waste of time. I left my stuff up and check in there everyonth or two. Also can find some info on peaks around here you won't find in other places like the big horns and beartooths, but pretty much have given up on the place. I wold look there first if I was heading to other countries with big peaks.

The parts of Summitpost which isn't the forums, the pages themselves, is probably pretty well. USA isn't the major part, it's an international site. The forums was mostly Americans though.

It's a long and an unpleasant story. One of those responsible to destroy the site is now moderator. Some come here and try the same ugly ways.

Edit: It's not an only rock climbers' site. It has every variety of climbing, from hiking to the high Himalaya climbers.

I liked SP....

The mods killed it....

when I figured out they rewrote some of my wonderfull grammer, I split.

I will make up my own words, THX

I am now warry about spending time making pages that will be tossed out as soon as some mod decides it time to toss out the useless climbing stuff.

I stop participating over there and deleted my stuff when they started banning my friends.
Besides the only thing more boring than talking about climbing is talking about hiking.

Loved the international side of the place tho, always cool to see how things are done elsewhere, which is severely lacking here on ST and over on mountain project.

oh I'm glad you're here Lolli,
but I meant a bigger international presence.
That is just the way it is here, NBD.

There are other sites where I can get a read on
what the rest of the world thinks of the USA.

I understood what you meant :-)

Didn't mean only me. The Taco isn't international though, in that way.

The place really stinks now that we don't have the Chief to get riled up over any and every little thing on the forums.

Its hard to beat a lot of the mountain/area/route pages, though. Much of the photography is easy to search and use for trip planning.

It's a pretty good site but it was annoying to navigate. There weren't summaries of routes or good way s to sort anything, you just had to keep clicking. Or maybe I just sucked at using it :/

The saga of how SummitPost committed suicide.

A lot of parallels to what is happening to ST now. In my opinion.
