The old Trav's tavern in Glenn Echo, Md, just down the road from Carderock.
Haunt of Climbers, Olympic Kayakers, biker dudes, and poets. Some just came for the fights. I almost got my assed kicked by some biker's girlfriend when I tried to keep two of the bikers under control as they drunkenly wrestled at my feet.
"my bad, carry on..."
Trav sold out in the 80's and retired to Boca Raton and the new owners went upscale. They sold out and moved next to Trav and now it is an Irish pub, I'm told.
There is hope.
Toast: " may you live in interesting times"

Many good times over many years at the Strawberry Lodge as depicted by our beloved Weege.
I had a roommate in Santa Cruz back in the '80s that was a surfer/ski bum that worked as a waiter at Strawberry on and off for years. He went by the moniker Spike and was like a Peter Pan dude that kept the dream alive. Long boards at Steamer"s Lane, waited tables with my yet to be wife. The sound system and record collection he had made some legendary parties, right across the street from the Grog Shop. The Hubbard Hyatt.

Alas & alack! I don't have any local public house photos, since I'm not used to photographing those scenes. I do have a photo of Hedi & me in one of Choss Creek's two watering holes, a few years back.
However for an exterior shot! I do have a photo of the Fairview Inn, the social center of Talkeetna, AK from back in 1976, when we spent a few days there waiting for decent weather to fly into the Hayes Range with Cliff Hudson. A pleasant spot to mingle with the locals and other climbers. Got to know Michael Covington, who was doing the same.
Then I was curious as to how the Fairview might have changed in the last 38 years, so I checked it out on Google Images. A windsox has been added to the top, and a historical sign to the front.
Oh yes! The Toast!

A pub from my youth just celebrated its 100th anniversary a couple years ago.
Finnegan's in. Huntington Ny.
Here it is from the 1920's
Same tin ceiling and walls.. same bar... They just added some tables and chairs.
They are famous for a mural on the outside of the building painted in the 1970's and just restored which had all the locals then on it. Here is a piece of it.
That's old man Finnegan still holding court then, and the fellow in the straw boater with his own can of chips is my brother's father in law. I knew most of the other folks. I was a way at college, so I didn't make the cut. Here's the fellow who painted the original for free and restored it 40 years later. He's quite famous now.
I buried my mother in the old hometown and afterwards we stopped in. The fellow behind the bar was on my football team with me.

Ha! Post up ST, I'd rather be in the mountains thinking about a pub than in a pub thinking about the mountains.....
Next opportunity to visit Placerville check out this water hole, Bricks on Main Street with friendly patrons and Aussie/climber/skier bar tender Chris!

the thing about the bricks:
acoustics is all wrong, in my opinion.
you'd think that brick would issue a nice
report, but on a busy night,
one has to yell his thoughts.
right down the street, at cascada,
same crowd density, less noise.
i don't know, maybe it's the kiwi bartender

We just moved to a town called La Verne. Our "local" is a place called Lordsburg Taphouse and Grill.
Great atmosphere, friendly patrons and owners, lots of sports on TV, decent food, great beer on tap. Will get a pic next time out.

Lorenzo,
The Irish Pub in Glen Echo (used to be Trav's) is now a high scale place. You still see a few climbers there (I went there after PATC-MS Carderock Wednesdays a few times), but the prices are a bit high for the average climber, particularly the food.

As pubs go, I can't really say, but it's universal that more suds are sold when the publican, the tapster, the puller, whatever...
is friendly and knows his beers and their merits.
Some can't help being gorgeous, either.
17th St. Public House has no juke, no live music, no darts, just beer and wine. It's all good, too.
I'm heading down that way now.
See ya!

If these places could talk, a thanks to all who have posted. Cracked me up seeing the Fairview Fritz and wow Lorenzo that mural is a piece of time. Can't help to think that most of ST prefers to abide in the safety of their own homes, so here's to you in the spirit of this thread, "here's to these spirits and to this watering hole, may we drink beyond confusion."
