More comments on American Sniper:
it's about the war people dream we had,
not the actual war.

Just finished this one:

Bones Brigade: An Autobiography

Streamable on Netflix.

Very watchable, esp. for those of us of that generation, with skaterat histories.

In particular, the profiles of Tony Hawk & Rodney Mullen are especially engrossing. A great quote of Mullen, on Hawk's success:

“He won everything…or close to it.
That creates…so much more pressure
Because there’s no gratification in winning
There’s only upholding something so you don’t lose it.

And it is staggering…it usurps the joy…
It’s like…a Kafka short story…
You build something but you can’t live in the house because you sit around guarding it.”

Inherent Vice.

Not a fan.

The sound mixing was abysmal. Couldn't hear much of it, and turning up the volume blew my eardrums out on the remainder.

There were certainly good moments, but "intricate plot"? Seemed more like a snarled 1970's macrome hammock to me...something you could untangle if you wanted to, but would rather just fall asleep on.

Watched film called 'Victoria'

It's super intense but quite liked it. The craziest thing is the entire film is shot in a single take, no edits. Works well!

Not a movie, per se, but certainly worth noting is the recent German 3 part
TV series "Generation War". Brutally honest and extremely well done on
all levels: production, acting, writing. Can't recommend it enough.

Available for streaming on Netflix.

High and Low

"Toshiro Mifune is unforgettable as Kingo Gondo, a wealthy industrialist whose family becomes the target of a cold-blooded kidnapper in High and Low (Tengoku to jigoku), the highly influential domestic drama and police procedural from director Akira Kurosawa. Adapting Ed McBain’s detective novel King’s Ransom, Kurosawa moves effortlessly from compelling race-against-time thriller to exacting social commentary, creating a diabolical treatise on contemporary Japanese society."

Kurosawa meets film noir. Really good!

Somebody here recommended 'Picnic'....as one of the most romantic movies of all time.

Yes, it is very that.

Tron. A movie about a video game. A video game based on a movie. Who knew?

Just watched this:

I might (probably) learned of it from someone here at ST...not sure my feeble mind was able to access more than about 15% of what Campbell so fluidly articulates, but it was greatly compelling, nonetheless.

The implications of his view into film is especially tangible.

Not movies, but excellent TV series: The Night of (HBO) and Preacher (AMC).

TV series are wonderfully sophisticated these days compared with amateurish stuff from 30 or 40 years ago (Bones vs Hart to Hart, etc.)

Walkabout is great.

Star Trek Beyond is a lot of fun. Any movie where the Beastie Boys play roll is a hoot.
