Jim- That's just Pat.

That route was rated 5.11 the day it went up complete with the bowling ball case-sized death block at the end of the 3rd pitch layback where it gets reeeeeely thin. Once that block left the picture leaving a nice jug to stand up on it took a couple of letter grades off the rating.

Two of the longest falls that I ever caught started at that block and ended below the hanging belay!

When I was making my way through the grades 5.10+ was as hard as ANYTHING around Tucson and off by an entire number grade. It took a while to correct that after I came back from doing lots of 5.11 routes elsewhere by way of comparison. We came by it honestly since our northern brothers like Lovejoy, Baxter and Karlstrom set the mark. For example, Crack Lovers variation to the Classic at Granite Mountain is rated 5.7 (with a 5.9 move to get started). LOL

I am pleased to announce the second Granitica Festival to be held in Tucson at the Oro Valley location of the Summit Hut Saturday and Sunday evenings March 15 & 16 6-10pm.

Haven't been to the new location in OV yet... the drive will be awesome, as it takes you closer to the Catalina's. (Yo, Jefe... get me a ticket!?!?)

This would be a great event. The place is sorta steeped in mystery.

On the Edge ... It is steeped in mystery and wonder, so much so, as a History major in college, a classmate and I took a special trip there and produced an engaging presentation on the history and mysteries of The Stronghold ... We got an "A".

Endgame went up in the 90s and isn't going to be examined this time around.

The Granitica Festival is devoted to Arizona climbing history and moves to a new area and time period for discussion every other year. The first Festival in October of 2012 was devoted to the early history of Prescott College and climbing at Granite Mountain in the 1960s and 70s.

Good luck with that Rick!

I did get in touch with Brad Smith who isn't going to be able to join us unfortunately.

Please let your friends know about this gathering with three weeks to go.

Don Morris actually met Dr. Forbes who did the first ascent of Baboquivari via the now standard Forbes Route in the company of Sr. Montoya on July 12, 1898! He is going to talk a bit about that early history before we shift focus to the Stronghold for the remainder of the discussion.

Make this event if you can! Steve does an amazing job in producing these gatherings. I've made two so far - the Syndicato Granitica that was hosted in Prescott (Granite Mountain) in the Fall of '12 and the Free Climbing in Yosemite that was hosted in Oakdale. These were a wonderful time for both the content and the company. I can't recommend them enough.

I'd be there except I have to go to a conference in Colorado that weekend and will definitely miss seeing the friends that will be there!

Have to stay on subject, so...

Who's been here and is it still there BUMP?

From the net:
The portion of the Butterfield Stage Line run from Fort Bowie to Tucson crossed just off the northern tip of the Dragoon Mountains. This line was a favorite target of Cochise's warriors, they killed 22 drivers in a 16 month period. The Butterfield Stage Line established a station stop on the north end of the Dragoons in 1858. It was called the "Dragoon Springs" station due to the natural springs located there. A massacre occurred at this site on September 8, 1858. On October 5, 1869 a Col. John Finkle Stone, the 33-year-old president of Apache Pass Mine, near Ft. Bowie, headed back to his home in Tucson aboard a mail coach. He had an escort of four soldiers. When they approached the abandoned stagecoach station at the north end of the Dragoon Mountains, a group of Apaches came out of a gully and hit them fast and hard, killing everyone. (The ruins of the station stand today although the springs were rerouted by mother nature in an earthquake in the late 1800's.)

I just got news that Don Morris can't make the event and a clarification that it was Joanna and Dan Jones on the FA of Don's Crack in 1967 as reported.

Don had been pushing for a route on the east face of Baboquivari and so Joanna and Dan named it after him.

Man was that a freakin' blast or what!

I learned so much and laughed so often that my head is still spinning.

Thanks to all of you who made the event possible by paying your good money to help me get folks to the event or by getting up to tell stories and sharing your experiences, humor and perspective with those present.

I also want to thank Dana and Jeremy Davis for making this event possible on very short notice and for handling all of the details to make it a stunning success. The Oro Valley Summit Hut is truly an impressive and very well stocked and staffed specialty outdoor store continuing the tradition of quality started by Dave Baker almost a half century ago.

The speakers were in fine form one and all and it was a pleasure to revisit the early days and see these special people all in one place.

We had just enough image support to let the audience see what we were talking about. Steelmonkey's superb route overlays were the icing on the cake visually just like they were in Prescott at the first Granitica Festival. Thanks again, Greg and Felicia!

I hadn't seen Joanna or Merle since the mid seventies and I had the pleasure of sitting down to hear about the adventures of Ms Coleman for three hours!

I had her read the notes that she made about doing the FA of Don's Crack and wish that I had asked her to do so at the Festival. I will see about posting it up if possible. Several attempts preceded the FA in 1967 and her descriptions of working out the technical details of the three-day route are absolutely classic.

My wall mentor Marty Woerner was also in the house and had some choice words for everyone. As someone pointed out Marty set the mark for on stance drilling with his ascent of Thin Slice at Granite Mountain so my exploits were an outgrowth of his influence and encouragement by example to head up into the blankness and see what comes of it.

So much climbing talent in that room that I felt really proud to have shared a rope with almost all of them along the way. Pure inspiration!

Special thanks go out to Geir Hundal and Clay Mansfield for bringing the discussion into the present by talking about the SA of Sensory Desuetude.

No small deal getting up in front the Old Guard but they pulled it off in fine style! I got to hang out and climb in the east Stronghold with Geir and Marcy and they are some splendid company!

The honor is ours Steve! It was humbling to be in the presence of so many great climbers. JS got the second ascent on SD, but we are content with #3.

Marcy and I had a blast camping with you, Mimi, and Paul and are still talking about how it was both great fun and inspiring.

I have been ruminating on the festival since we left and headed out to Red Rocks. Cochise Stronghold, its classic climbs, its people, and its history have shaped my climbing immeasurably. This event brought all of that together for me. It was a fantastic experience.

Paula- Do not start another thread about this event please.

Post your pictures and thoughts right here along with everyone else.

What fun that was!

How about climbing pictures? I know some of you who attended the fest actually put on shoes and harnesses, so come on, post up.

My wife was down there for the week before the event, and climbed with some of you, and she's showed me some of her pictures so I know you actually did rope up.

Here's Steve doing something manly on some rock a couple of days before the fest...

Classy, Rick. Real classy.

Take it back to the MP forum and don't PM me again.
I don't need your excuses for your lack of class, esp wishing ill on a fellow human being and climber.
