Cool tour. How large is that thing?
Our group was flying one of these out in Oregon last week, not taking video but still photos at 1-second intervals. The "pilot" had software that, running overnight, could stitch all the photos into a very detailed 3D model of the terrain, which could later be rotated and zoomed from any angle. The idea is to survey forest conditions (e.g., tree density, size distribution, health and fuel loads) over a larger area than ground teams can sample, but with greater detail than satellites -- centimeters rather than meters.
One drawback for use around people or wildlife could be that our rig is fairly noisy, sounds like an angry large cyborg wasp.

Good point Chiloe ( and Mal) as fascinated as I am by these things and their potential for film and mapping, there is a time and place.
A couple months back I was at the fisher towers parking lot after guiding AA on a crowded Sunday. There were a Lot of people there, the parking lot was overflowing, kids were poking each other in the eye; the works. In the middle of all this a guy was flying a big drone (hepta, or octo, copter). It was pretty loud and it was just flying right over the crowd, in dubious control. A nervous Dalmatian scurried around, tail between its legs, squeaking, shaking and yipping; expressing the feelings of several people present. Pilo dude could have been doing this in hundreds of square hectares of uninhabited desert surrounding us, but he had, had to be right there. Greenie plates, of course!

Flying these around anyone that has not consented or objects isn't (wait let me grab a phrase from the hated words thread) cool.
I plan to deliver sushi and drop rubber chickens.
Chiloe - that sounds like a great project. I'm interested in how these can be used for fisheries management or studies. I've been emailing back and forth with Deuce. He's planning on building a drone to bring back to the Trango to help navigate the ice field much faster.

nice footage and brought a longing to go back to Vedauwoo... how strange, I really like that place.
Anyway, all sorts of problems with safety around people, and a lot of potential opening up some remote sensing possibilities very inexpensively, should be amazing to see what happens in the next 10 years.

We're working out how to do this "right," starting with landowner and Forest Service relations. Both groups can right away see some potentials, from finding lost cows to surveying conditions on their lands, including insect problems and possibly fire risk. Just having a 3D model of your landscape evokes a wow factor. The Forest Service rightly sees a concern in that they've got "a lot of aluminum in the air" and want to be sure they know where the UAVs are, can we keep them at low elevation etc. We also made a one-page handout for anyone who's interested, explaining who we are and what we're doing with those drones.
In addition to the hexacopter shown upthread, we tried out this unit which can cover more ground.
Unlike the hexacopter, the fixed-wing is peacefully quiet. Hard to see even when you're looking.

this year has been very strange, so I'm just rolling with it now... but I hope 1.4 Billion + 1 years still works out...
