Chez, straight from the "other" Tom K.

:-)

"The Mount Cowen massif is comprised of a coarse grained rock unit known regionally as the Mount Cowen Gneiss. It was originally emplaced as a large igneous intrusive body around 2.5 billion years ago. Based on mineral present, the MC Gneiss ranges in composition from granodiorite to quartz diorite. Later in the Precambrian, the entire region enjoyed several tectonic episodes of high-temperature metamorphism and deformation in the form of shearing and folding. These events gave rise to the spectacular textures seen today in the the rocks of the Mount Cowen area."

No offense, TomK...

Folks had to get more vocal to protect access...become more of a known user group...still, it's a pretty quite scene out here...

Are the hmbug spires climbable in winter or are they pretty much snowed in? Great thread. I had not seen this one.

Mostly snowed in--we've had higher snowfall amounts than normal this year, Mike M.

Even in dry Winters, the 'Bugs wouldn't be high on my list--pretty hit and miss, with trudging approaches to anything but the Wedge...

Tom--I still refer to it as "alpine granite" ;-)
