RJ, even you know that "a kilt with no undies" is redundant.
It would be ok if it weren't for updrafts.

hey there say, fritz...

thanks for posting , i was wondering how it was going...

i don't know much about these wall-trips, etc...
but i have read how sometimes, climbers are met with friends that
share the congrats with them, and have a meal, and help take stuff down...

sure sounds like a great thing to remember, and tuck in your heart, for
future good cheer, on the road of life... :)

say, this sounded great here:

In other words, we're trying to give a friend a hand

(was that mighty hiker, that posted that? i will fix that, if
i got it wrong)...

wow, i'd help, but the thought is just to add support to plaidman,
as obvious to all, i can't... though the heart is willing...

hope to hear some good support here, as to taking time,
for another human's good-will...

On valley floor again. Got all bags to the fixed lines on the rap off East Ledges. Brought 1 down with me.

So now I have 2 bags left.

Relax he's doing a great job.

He's maned up and doing it solo just like the hard men of past.

He'll be looking back at this for a long time to come ......

hey there say.... wow, good to hear plaidman...

say, and to this, very true, as well, werner:

Relax he's doing a great job.

He'll be looking back at this for a long time to come ......

but, i am a bit soft of heart:
so i still think it is fun-memory, too, to have some buddies there to celbrate when you reach the top, and have some bits of help...

each climb and each trail is different, i know, though...
and say: when you don't get the help, JUST KNOWING that there are
folks that would-if-they-could, sure add to the treasure of it all...

I heard he's soloing because no one wants to belay a guy wearing a kilt with no undies...?

Thread drift:

So I worked with this nudist carpenter once in West Virginia?

He was an older ex-marine...

I feel your pain.

The good news was I was 45 minutes from the New!

Plaidman! I'm Happy to see that some help for the down-side of your epic has appeared.

Please email me details, if my compensation offer was part of the package.

Looking forward to your trip-report------and big congrats on every part of what you have achieved in the last few months!

"On valley floor again. Got all bags to the [top of the] fixed lines on the rap off East Ledges. Brought 1 down with me. So now I have 2 bags left [at the top of the fixed lines]."

Good grief. Plaidman - WTF were you thinking??

Pay attention all you wall climbers:

Plaidman's strategy above is fundamentally wrong.

It is virtually no different to rappel with one pig as it is with three. The way you do this is to assemble all the pigs into a single load with a single power point, and attach your descendeur to the pigs' power point. You put the pigs on rappel, and you clip into them. This is called "riding the pig". You stay on the pigs, the pigs do not hang from you.

Obviously you have to arrange docking tethers or adjustable daisies on the pigs' suspension point for crossing the anchor stations.

It is really no harder to rappel with three hundred pounds than it is with a hundred. Honest! Trust me, I know. I just rapped Lurking Fear from Thanksgiving Ledge to the base [double rope pulldown, using the Petzl method of single rope rappel whereby you put the ropes through the rap anchors, and fix one side using a butterfly plus a locker]. This way, I could rap with all my piggage on a single rope using a Grigri. But you can rap on both ropes if you prefer.

Plaidman might have a big kit, but I guarantee it is knott bigger than Dr. Piton's Junk Show. [Nothing is!] Now, Plaidman or his sherpas have to unnecessarily jug four ropes up to retrieve the other two bags! Geez......

Understanding proper big wall techniques will save you a ton of work, and this is absolutely one of those times. [/rant]

My comments above in no way detract from Plaidman's proud and excellent solo ascent of mighty El Capitan, and I am thrilled for him! The purpose of my comments is to point out that in this instance, there is indeed a Better Way. Just like when you read Accidents in North American Mountaineering, you can learn from others' mistakes.

Thanks Pete. You are ccrrect but as I had never tried the technique. I was unwilling to do it in the state of physical and mental exhaustion I was in, also adding that is was dark and the launching platform is a bit sketchy. In this instance I went with what I knew. I understand the principle. I was just unwilling to experiment at the moment.

By the way re belays rock. they were really the ticket as were many of the other suggestions you have made in the past.

All the best to ya.

Yep .....

When I used to work IMAX I could bring down all 300lbs of equipment in one shot this way all the time ......

Plaid is in the cafe right now getting ready to ride pigs :-)

Sometimes you have to beat yourself over the head with a hammer because it feels good when you stop.

Which is one of the great things about wall climbing. Climb El Cap on your vacation and the rest of your life feels like a vacation instead

Peace
