I think that there were three of them. I flew by pretty close. It was in broad daylight. My partner had super nice still cameras and made me wait until the Dawn Wall was in full sunshine. I was about to blow a fuse jumping that late in the day. This was the only time that I had jumped in daylight during normal season.

Well, Troy was on something around there. I learned early on not to fly out over the meadow and do lazy 360's for all to see. We would hang a left and hug the wall, swooping in over the last trees at the last second. You are only visible for about thirty seconds.
Troy came up to me when he got down and we had fun talking about it. I yelled hello to them.
I could have sworn it was Iron Hawk.
No boasting, really. I never did anything of much notice. El Cap has been jumped a couple of thousand times by now, so it isn't much.
I have just been curious who else it was. It just occurred to me and I started a thread, which I never do.

From your launch exit point you would have been hundreds of feet away from them if they were on Iron Hawk.
So you wouldn't have been close.
Maybe they were on a different route closer to your launch exit point ......

Don't remember the exact year but Troy, Tracy and Clance did the "Ghostbuster" ascent of Tangerine Trip around then. I.e. first ascent after the Carol Moyer(sp?) incident.

I never got caught because I had everything wired.
Most jumpers fly out over the meadow and do 360's for all to see. I had other landing areas. On this one, we hung a left, flew over almost to Zodiac about fifty feet from the wall, and swooped in to land on the sandbar at Devil's Elbow. Nobody on the ground saw us, because you can see the cars coming down the loop road. We flew between the trees and landed in the sandbar. You would have to have been standing right there to even see us.
I flew right by them on the wall. Not close enough to recognize the faces, but a few days later when Troy got down, he looked me up and it was a funny story.
That was the year when I was hiding in the SAR site, always signing in as an alternate for some person who was out for a while, and I entertained BASE royalty in the site when somebody came through. It was great fun being entertained by the Fish and Bill Russell. They were so funny I would double over.
Anyway, I flew by and pedaled my feet to them. I've never actually talked to a climber who saw me jump that summer other than Clark Jacobs who saw me do Half Dome one night.
I wrote an article in an underground BASE newsletter on how to get away with jumping El Cap. I haven't seen it in ages, but it sure did help keep people out of jail.
The old SAR pagers had a switch where you could listen to the LEO channel. I never had one, but I would listen in with the others in the site when something was going down. I got out of some crazy pickles that way.
I got a PM from Bill Russell. Troy did do Iron Hawk with Dorton and Clance. They don't post here, so oh well. If you have an email address, PM me with it. I am trying to write down old stories, and I would like to get their point of view.
Troy told me that a couple of guys had jumped it two days before us, but watching us he could tell that we were "pros." I had El Cap dialed, and if the modern guys would take my advice, fewer would be caught.

Ghostbuster ascent? Wow, that's pretty lame. She was a nice young gal from what I remember. She was pushing hard for herself.
We left some water for she and her partner, who were high and dry behind us on the Salathe.

Survival-
The trip laid stagnant for a long time after her death. They were the first team, and did everything the same way, I. E. fixed to the same anchors, cleaned the pitch without tying in as she did. In their words.. Shook the ghost off the route.

Thanks Mucci, still a bad moniker in my opinion.
I know there is a tradition of gallows humor in the valley, but I don't have to dig it.
Sorry, but I helped her on her way, and it was a shitty mistake, but people just make bad jokes sometimes.
For example, I know for a fact that some of that humor is not made in a respectful way, in the least.
We all try to move on.....
