Well, my partner today was wearing some old ass thrift store collared shirt that probably saw a golf course in its earlier years.

I've told others that slow climbing (behind slow teams) is worse than slow golf.
Now there are a couple foggy connections.

Complimentary, don't think so but maybe they're more similar than we think, Climbing the same route over and over sticking your finger, hand or fist into the same slot over and over at your local crag perhaps isn't so different than knocking a ball around into the same holes over and over at your local course.

We head out to our local crag over and over, just like a golfer heading out to the course over and over. Perhaps even our motives are similar, to be outside in the fresh air with your family or friends. Certainly the after climb/golf experience can be similar as well, sans the bloody hands with salutes you've cheated death, ha!

Is there a difference between golf and death? Esp for a climber?

I don't play golf very often, but I think that if you can get past the risk thing, there are many similarities between golf and climbing. Golf and climbing are not team sports. You rely only on your own knowledge and skills and can't blame anyone else when you don't perform up to snuff. Both golf and climbing are essentially problem solving and athletic performance combined. They're both agonizingly slow and boring to watch on TV for folks that don't participate. Like trad climbing, in golf you carry around a bunch of widgets of different sizes and shapes that need to be applied correctly in specific situations to solve specific problems - and both sports have their obsessive gear-heads. Both sports present the participant with site-specific problems. When you visit a new golf course or climbing area, you are presented with brand new problems to solve that are specific to that place. The mental aspects in both sports are absolutely critical. My favorite local climbing partner is also my favorite golfing buddy - and he totally gets it.

both are essential useless pursuits in the grand scheme of things,
both can be super fun and super frustrating
both are selfish and self-indulgent
both get you outside
both are hard to explain to those that don't partake
and in both, you can drink before, during, and after...

so yes maybe

I hate to say it, but since my shoulder went out, I've been golfing more than climbing.

Complimentary? No way. Golf is a game, climbing is a sport.

Folks poo-poo golf, but it's a crazy zen game and, while manicured, the courses can be beautiful (especially as the sun sets).

If I had to choose between climbing or golfing, there would be no choice.
But heck, nothing like hitting a ball 250+ yards!

The only good climbing joke involves golf.

What's the difference between climbing and golfing?
The golfer goes 'Whack!', 'Shit!'.
The climber goes 'Shit!', 'Whack!'.

I played a round with Bachar....he was pretty obsessed by it for a while.

That's a way cool bit of trivia, there!

They're both agonizingly slow and boring to watch on TV for folks that don't participate.

Yup.

The mental aspects in both sports are absolutely critical.

A great body helps with both, but I've done okay in both whilst not being blessed at all physically. That because they are both more mental than a lot of sports. Climbing being the only sport I can think of offhand where females are just a hair behind men at the very top level. There are also a lot of 14 year old girls that will humiliate most all avid men golfers. There are not a lot of 14 year old girls than can humiliate men who are avid football and basketball players. Which is why I love the saying that golf is 90% mental with the other 10% being... mental. haha It's the same with climbing. Alex Honnold proves that all the time!

Yup. lol

Golf is a game, climbing is a sport.

Or the other way around, or both games, or both sports? ha I don't know.

But heck, nothing like hitting a ball 250+ yards!

Yes, for me, highly refined and leverage-y, athletic feeling, magical, movement is way fun.

So, are spelling and climbing complementary pursuits? haha Or, how often are climbers complimented on their spelling? lol

I've always contended that the feeling in the pro golfers stomach when he's facing a long putt to win a major championship is exactly the same as the climber's who is facing a tough move 20 feet above his last piece of shaky protection. Obviously, the results of a failure to execute will be very different, but, physiologically, the feeling is the same.

I don't golf but I think it's an excellent game.

When I was a kid our Boy Scout camp was near a golf course and on the days that the course was closed the groundskeeper would let us play a round with bows and arrows.

I can appreciate that golf can present a stimulating mental challenge. Personally though, the consequences of failing that mental challenge (writing a 5 instead of a 4 on a card) are tremendously un-stimulating.
Bulldozing a chunk of nature to make a giant lawn with a dozen-and-a-half holes in it is also a fairly horrible prospect (in my opinion).
And I don't like to tuck in my shirt. Or wear a shirt.
