5 PM UPDATE: Alpine County Undersheriff Rob Levy provides new information regarding an assault of a woman Sunday night near Hope Valley who was stopped by a vehicle occupied by a man impersonating a police officer.
Authorities are looking for a man, described as a white, stocky build, approximately 40 to 50 years of age, 6 feet, two inches in height, 225 pounds, with dark hair and a bushy mustache. The male may have sustained injuries.
The male suspect’s vehicle was described as a newer full size diesel pickup, white in color, with possibly having aftermarket custom rims. Here is a news release issued Tuesday afternoon:

On 10-06-13, at approximately 9:00 pm a female was driving westbound on State Route 88 in the area of Woodfords Junction, Alpine County.
The female saw a white truck with unknown plates sitting in the same area. The female observed the truck begin to follow her into Woodfords Canyon area. The female observed what she believed to be a single red light shining from the truck and pulled to the side of the road believing she was being stopped by law enforcement. The female was contacted by a white male wearing dark clothing and a badge.
The male requested her information and then ordered her out of her vehicle. As the female exited her vehicle, the male grabbed her and threw her to the ground. A fight ensued between the male and the female. The female was able to fight off the male and escaped in her vehicle.
The male was described as a white, stocky build, approximately 40 to 50 years of age, 602 in height, 225 pounds, with dark hair and a bushy mustache. The male may have sustained injuries.
The male suspect’s vehicle was described as a newer full size diesel pickup, white in color, with possibly having aftermarket custom rims.
If you have any information please contact the Alpine County Sheriff’s Office at 530-694-2231.

Calif requires blue along with red lights for law enforcement.

All red is fire.

In order to do a vehicle stop there must be one steady red.

Only having flashing lights is not enough to do a vehicle stop.

Flashing lights are only meant to move traffic out of the way and for traffic to yield.

Vehicle should be marked.

If not marked check for the lic plates.

They are either govt. plates or CA Exempt plates.

On a rural road with no one around if you feel it's bogus keep moving until you are in an area where people can witness the vehicle stop.

If the LEO vehicle is bonafide then they will stop and identify themselves.

If it's fake they will leave the scene.

You have that right to not stop if you feel the vehicle does not meet the basic red/blue, Ca exempt or govt. plates identifying marks in a remote area.

On our vehicles here, on take down (vehicle stop) I wire the blue to flash and 2 steady reds along with the rest of the flashing lights.

Ladies, NEVER get out of the car, even for a real Cop. This happend to a friend of mine in Big Bear. Tell him, we'll drive to town, to a well lit area with other people around, then I'll get out of the car.

The scumbag surely preyed in California ...
Cali has it's fair share of whackjobs, but the crime occurred in Nevada (or close enough) - a "right to work" state, and still pretty rough-and-tumble, where I assure you it would not be unusual to feel like you were suddenly transported to a sceane from Mad Max, or worse. I speak from experience.

Wow.. She fought him off and he has sustained injuries. That is powerful and good news.
May he be found and face the consequences. As for the woman, buy her a beer, a few diamonds, etc. She is awesome.

I heard this news last night through the grapevine. The woman is apparently in CrossFit with a friend of ours. I hope she beat the sh#t out of that low life piece of sh#t and I hope his next attempted victim takes it to the next level.

I have seen several similar posts on facebook. So many in fact that I was a bit skeptical. Apparently this is becoming more common? I seem to recall hearing about more of these cases every decade or so.

I wonder if the perp is chosing areas where 911 coverage may be poor or is remote enough that it takes some time for law enforcement to arrive in time to prevent the assault.

This sounds like dangerous devious creep whose had some incarceration in the past.

I drove through the canyon at that exact time and I am racking my brain trying to remember if I noticed anything.

To think that guy watched us drive by looking for victims. There was no one on the road at that time, it felt very desolate that night.

years back on mt. Hamilton road one night, I was sitting in my car and some dude on jeep came up the road with red light flashing spot light to my face talking on PA " this is no parking zone, move blah blah blah" and I became suspicious cause local LEs are either CHP or Sheriff and neither drive jeeps with lights all over it so I called sheriff dispatch directly and told them about the jeep dude and they said, we are coming. I rolled the window and told the jeep dude f*#k off and ignored him and he left.

15 min later I left downhill and saw a CHP and SO headed up there looking for that dude.
