A Message from Ana and Jose that I'm posting for them:
Dear folks at SuperTopo,
Recently, SuperTopo hosted the forum topic "Climber shot in Ten Sleep." My name is Ana Deaconu, and I am the girlfriend of Jose, the climber who was shot.
The SuperTopo forum provoked a lot of interesting conversation about other conflicts between climbers and locals in Ten Sleep. It also provoked an unfortunate quantity of comments that we found to be very disrespectful and insensitive. While we found it hurtful to read some of the comments on the forum ("it was probably his girlfriend"; "he's Ecuadorian, it was probably drug related"), we hope that SuperTopo can help us out now that we are in need. Jose's medical bills are getting very near $50,000, and there is more follow-up medical care to come. He has no insurance. We have established a website where we tell what happened at Ten Sleep and ask climbers to consider making a contribution (via Paypal, credit or debit).
Can SuperTopo please announce the website and contribution fund on your forum, as well as on any other relevant parts of your site? We would make a forum comment ourselves, but we don't have a SuperTopo account and his medical bills have make us weigh all economic decisions very carefully.

If you want to know the exact story, you can read it at the link. In a nutshell it sounds like this couple was attacked while they slept in their tent and the male was shot in the chest. Local law enforcement has low hopes of solving the case.

Please look into various programs available to reduce your bills before sending any payment not absolutely necessary to continue needed health care services. In this nation we are extorted by Medical oligopoly and unregulated non-competitive practices in order for large corporations to make Billions off our life threatening hardships.
I am all for paying for services at reasonable rates. But please don't let yourself be extorted at the basic level of "your money or your life". No one should feel morally obligated to pay that type of debt.
Take care of yourselves first and get out and back home when you can.

Every hospital takes huge write-offs every year because people can't pay. It sounds like you're basically unable to pay which is probably the case for ~25% of the people they see.

it is a climber's forum so inappropriate comments and black humor are the norm.
Often it is a cover for some very warm hearts, so don't sweat it.
If these bills are inescapable you should let us know.

I gave, and I'm happy I did. I don't give to a lot of hard luck cases on ST, but somebody comes to my country and gets shot through no fault of his own: that BS.

Come on climbers! These were two foreign climbers visiting a fantastic climbing area in the US and some crazy thing happened to them. This is not the time to make sarcastic comments. Think of if this happened to you when you were climbing in a foreign country.
I donated and feel proud of it. I also wrote to the county sheriff asking them to keep this investigation open as well as let it be known that incidents like this will not be tolerated. Let's leave the political and sacastic commments for other threads. Ten Sleep is a great place to climb and they were just trying to enjoy this great place which I got to visit on a trip in August.

I sent them some $ as soon as I got my paycheck. I'm completely horrified about what happened to these folks. People should be able to camp and climb in peace and they didn't deserve what happened to them. They certainly don't deserve snarky commentary. Wish those people would keep that BS to themselves.
Beyond any medical bills they are racking up, a gunshot to the chest is going to cause some financial hardship. Even if he returns home there will be follow-up medical care and his ability to work and support himself will be affected for some time.

i'll be honest: i haven't donated to any of these requests for money in the past...
but this is beyond the pale.
being randomly shot in the chest while enjoying some climbing in another country?
no one should have to deal with the [financial] consequences of this alone.
even $5 multiplied by thousands of people adds up. $20 even faster.
given the information we currently have, this could have been anyone of us.

Ana and Jose,
There's an amazing fundraising site called "GoFundMe" that could really be of help to you, I think. A friend of mine (who just had cancer surgery) needed $15,000 for follow-up alternative treatments in Mexico, and merely through her friends and Facebook postings, she was able to raise $22,000 and get her treatments.
There are many different people fundraising on the site, for all types of causes, and it seems to be working miracles for some of them. I don't believe there's an upfront cost, but it's something you could find out very easily by Googling "GoFundMe".

I'm so sorry to hear about this horrifying event. What a traumatic experience. My heart goes out to both of you. I will send $ as soon as I get paid next, and have posted this on other social media forums to generate more help. Best wishes to you. I hope your further experiences of climbing in the US can leave you with better memories someday.

Then decided to google this dickwads address as it's Worland, Wyoming. He lives 20 miles from Ten Sleep. Both shootings were from a .22. I have sent the following to the Wyoming Highway Patrol:
"Hi guys:
I was reading a strange incident that just occurred and it sounded just like the kind of strange shooting that had randomly happened in Ten Sleep canyon a couple years back. The news story says that Jesus Deniz, also known as, 18 - was arrested for randomly shooting some folks who stopped to help him. His address, Worland, Wy. is only 20 miles from the earlier random unsolved Ten Sleep, Wy. shooting of the visiting Equadorian rock climber Jose Mosquera in 2013.
The news story today says " In an interview with two FBI agents on Wednesday, Deniz admitted to shooting three people with a .22 caliber rifle and then driving away in their car, a court statement filed by FBI Special Agent Larry McGrail II said."
The earlier unsolved shooting of Jose Mosquera in 2013, was also random, with a .22 cal as well.

Sent something similar to the Worland police dept." In 2013, there was an unsolved shooting of an Equadorian rock climber named Jose Mosquera. He and his girlfriend Ana were camping in Ten Sleep Canyon, they hear a noise at 2am and Jose got up to see what it was. A shot rang out in the darkness and he was hit. Today I am reading the news and trip over this: http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2015/jul/31/mexican-accused-double-murder-legal-immigrant/ I note several coincidences. 1st, the shooter in todays story was in country in 2013 when Jose was shot. Next, the shooter arrested today lives today in Worland. 20 miles from Ten Sleep. 3rd) Both shooting incidents seem so random, unreasonable and unexplainable. Lastly, both shootings were with a .22 cal. round. Very uncommon round to intetionally shoot at a person with.
It's just too coincidental to not look into. For myself, I'm a rock climber and would like to get out to Ten Sleep sometime. It has a good reputation of solid and kind people - other than this incident.

Mr. Deniz told the FBI he shot the three people with a .22 caliber rifle because he was tired of waiting, and because he thought he heard the daughter laughing at him, FBI Special Agent Larry J. McGrail II said in the affidavit.
Mr. Deniz is Mexican, and the Obama administration deems him a legal permanent resident who entered the country legally on May 31, 2013 — though they didn’t say how he earned that status initially.
Timing is possibly correct anyway.
