We're headed for possible shut down. This time its starting to look like it might happen. Working here in Sequoia I've already been hearing how it will be if it does.Signs saying 'Closed' at the entrance station and a really bare bones crew working and on call. All the campers will have one day to vacate. Crazy and historical all at once! In Yosemite I can imagine that it will be even more intense! Who's going to call the wall climbers off of El Cap and other formations. Would this be a good time to go up? I'm going to be pissed right off and out of a job too. What do you all think??

BITD they closed the Zion road in winter to put in a sewer line and I rode my mule in.

Still one of my favorite trips. It was like a century and a half earlier except the deer had become tame and soon my mule was trotting up the canyon with deer on all sides within 10m, each checking out the other.
The silence was deafening.

Be pretty cool to be on the Captain without traffic on the road.

Rene, do you have any idea when they might impliment such a shutdown? I was planning to be in Yosemite beginning on the 28th for a spell. It woulld be inconvenient if the place was shut down & I had to make new plans.

Well, actually it does. If the government does shutdown, the parks will be closed. The NPS will keep a bare minimum LEO staff and a hand few others on board but that will be it.

Last year I got a call from the NPS due to the impending shutdown (which never happened) that if this did happen a Ranger would be at the entrance so I could in out from my home.

Hopefully this will not happen. The last time it did, the park was closed for several weeks.

no one does, but it's not likely to happen in the short term.

gop went nuclear on cruz. they're going to line up face-saving stuff that will buff the base, but if boehner and mcconnell were gonna cave, they'd have done it.

well, mcconnell didn't cave, but it looks like boehner will. or better put, he's not driving the bus.

Does your mule like being laughed at?

At 17 hands Blue was a giant, bigger than most horses and twice as strong.
Good thing she was such a sweet hearted beast.
We have a few moose in southern Utah. Perhaps some of the other deer have seen them and mistook her, but I doubt they laughed.

Neither would you if you saw us running at you (or did you not know that mules kick with their front legs too?)

Wondering if anyone has answers to these practical questions that I have since I live inside the park entrance.

1. When would Yosemite shut down? Right on October 1st or later?

2. I'm assuming I'd be able to get in and out. I have a park sticker and address on my license. If somebody wanted to visit me would I have to leave the park and go get them or could they talk their way in at the gate?

Peace

Is PTPP still up on El Cap? If he didn't have a radio, he would be really surprised when he got down.

The valley is an amusement park. I'd like it if they ripped up every inch of pavement and gave it back to the Miwok.

Anybody remember the closure of 1996? All hotels in the park closed, Bracebridge and New Years dinners at the Ahwahnee canceled. They had a special Bracebridge show for all the employees at Curry Village and the jesters wife broke her leg.

AND after all that hardship on the visitors all the NPS employees got back pay!
