It seems such a natural evolution of our dystopian culture.

I don't hate it!
After 30 years in health care/emergency rooms I've learned to accept it as part of our intelligent design.

"Boom, boom ain't it fun to be crazy?"

People with mental conditions often ilicit behavior far removed from societal norms. Combine this with the concerns many have about their own mental health and you can see some reasons why people with mental illness are shunned.
The shocking thing is that the richest country on earth can't rise above the superstitious fears of many of it's citizens and provide the care and treatment needed.
Our prisons would be less full and our culture would be more elevated if we treated mental illness as a disease of a key organ. Instead, we often punish the behavior (a symptom) rather than treating the underlying cause.

hey there say... on a serious note... it is terrble what it does to young children that have to live through mental illness, in their folks, :(
especially when it is the mom, and she is there constantly with them...

:(

also, donini (think it was you that shared this?)
i know a gal who worked in this field, as to helping folks with said-conditions... sadly, the funds were taken away from the programs that she did for helping these folks... thus, no help for them, and no job for her, but--hers was a tempory loss...

she then worked in one of the prison systems for a bit and:

she FOUND a huge portion of her former 'patients' WERE in the
prison, having 'gone off the deep end' :(

Putin a few days ago sent America a letter.

"How do I put this politely? You Americans are dumb."

And he's 100% right .......

We're all insane to some degree or another and the really insane get shunned because they are a reminder of our own insanity and denial...How uncomfortable...

^^^^ Obama seems to be getting along pretty well, despite his seemingly insane desire to play nuclear Russian Roulette in the middle east.

Nuclear war, or the provocation of it, is absolute insanity IMHO . . .

I always thought the definition of insanity was doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

Mr Donini is right on the mark. The stigma against any mental/emotional problem is still alive and well in this country. If some, who shall remain nameless, continue to slash away at affordable health care for all, the problem will only get worse.

A Medicine Man I knew in Washington state when I lived there once told me that a lot of the crazy, homeless people were "Old Souls" and that there was not much tethering them to the mortal plane anymore...

I will never forget that.
