Does anybody here have any thoughts on how the currently ongoing fire will affect Facelift? Those of us who would be coming from the Eastside and out of state will definitely be affected in our travel plans. I may not attend.

Rodger, how are you planning on getting here to the Facelift? I'll be glad to help with a ride if it's from the W side of the Sierra Nevada, like SFO or Oakland.
As to the impact of the fire, it's hard for me to say. Others among us have more insight into the question, certainly.
Good thing to bring up so far in advance.

My plans initially involved flying my own plane into either Mariposa, South Lake Tahoe, or Placerville. I'm trying to make some advance arrangements because I'm only returning from a 3 week climbing trip in the Dolomites on the 23rd of September. I may be too wiped out to want to make another trip that soon, too. Thanks for the offer ^^^, Mouse.

I would be up for some tree sapling planting...... though it's probably not allowed in the park???
weather wise - looking good for vacation... not good for the rim fire...No Rain predicted.

Rodger, I'd be fine with anything. Mariposa, any nearby airstrip. I bet Pine Mountain Lake might be off-limits, but the rest, wait and see.
Go have fun in the limestone! Envy, envy, envy...

My boss plane-shares out of Pine Mountain Lake and I know a bit of the airport from him. My opinion is that is is highly likely PML will be open in a month. If it weren't for the increased traffic and smoke I would say you could go there today. There is also Columbia airport, which is supposed to be an exciting landing.
Depending on what the fire does I would think your biggest problem would be avoiding the smoke plume to the north-east, depending on your ratings. If you do fly in I would plan to stay south: Mariposa, Merced, etc...
If you do land in PML I could do pick-up and drop off, timing dependent on work.

^^"you should be able to smoke weed without any ranger danger,"
Wonder how many plant ops went up in smoke so far?

This thread is somewhat reassuring.
I have Facelift plans...flying into Reno on 9/24, climbing a few days in the South Tahoe area then driving to the Valley through Tioga Pass/Tuolumne.
I have been trying to decide if I should cancel my flight or decide to go somewhere else.
I figure SuperTopo is the best place to ask as many here have lived through Sierra fires before. Is there a good chance Tioga Road will be open by 9/26? Is there a good chance the Rim fire will be suppressed enough by then that air quality will be less affected? (right now it seems even our Lover's Leap plans are in jeopardy)
Thanks

Is there a good chance Tioga Road will be open by 9/26? There's a good chance.
However, by late September the Park service has no great incentive to keep it open.
It all depends……...

It would be awesome to hear from Ken J. at this point. I have quite a few folks asking me if Face Lift is still on.
Thanks, Lynne

I expect Ken will post on SuperTopo immediately IF it's off.
I'm assuming it's on.

Perhaps this awful incident will put an end to the foolish thoughts of resurrecting the Fire Fall.

FYI...On 8/29/13 Ken posted on the Yosemite Facelift facebook page "We are going ahead with it."
