My dad took me backpacking, taught me change overs in triathalons, was my belay slave when I learned to climb, was a coach on my ski race team, raced XC MTB with me, all around good guy.

He still rides 300+- miles a week on his road bike. 57 years old and the guy is still a machine.

Thanks Dad!

Happy Fathers Day to all you Dads! Channeling eKat here. Ha ha ha!

Today, as a father of four, I'm turning the tables and expressing my gratitude for my kids. It's a privilege to be their dad and I feel very lucky to have them all in my life. Today is a great time to acknowledge that.

My own father is a complex guy. His interest in being outdoors and backpacking inspired me to start backpacking and that lead me to this wacky, beloved climbing world. He's currently lost somewhere in America now. I hope he's found his peace and the door is always open. He just has to walk through it, if he wants to and if he can.

I'm grateful for what he's given me, no doubt. At his own initiative, he was present at my birth (and my brothers') at a time when it was considered medically dangerous to have a father present at delivery!!!!! My parents searched far and wide for a hospital that would allow the father to be present. I have most the the letters and replies they wrote in search of a hospital, including one from the head of the Yale medical school stating such and ideas was absolutely out of the question. I always wanted to find that guy and show it to him, though he's probably long gone.

Anyway, they eventually found a Seventh Day Adventist Hospital in Stoneham, Mass. that was fine with this. Except for an anesthesiologist that almost has to be punched out! :-) But that was averted and all was well. My dad was there. That really has had a huge positive impact on me.

Peace,
Eric

18 days for me to outlive my father.

They should declare the day after Father's Day to be Ugly Tie Day.

My mom used to give me shirts. So the next day I'd wear one. She would say, "you didn't like the other one?"

After she did it the third time I opened the shirt to reveal the other one underneath.

She never tried THAT again.

hey there say, sioux juan... very nice thread...

happy father's day to all the fathers, here... and thanks for all these wonderful shares... :)

i can't thank my father enough for him, just being him...
something about him, made me want to open, honest, and good... and--to just
be there for others...

i sure wish he'd like to chat more though, :)

not sure if i can find a good pic, though... will see... :)
and--my son's are all good father's to their kids, and i may not hear from them, but they are doing what REALLY counts: taking time to be real dads in a world where many just don't really care to even TRY to care...

may all you dads out there, have the father's day GIFT of kids that will keep such 'daddy or mommy love' for kids, NOT to die-out...

god bless!

Sorry about your Dad, Susan. God bless him.

Ironically, this is the heart of the thread. Fathers handing down stuff to the kids, or next generation.

Teach them well, I think the Crosby/Stills/Nash sang that one....

'Retirement in Short Supply'

My old dad he was a sitting by the fire,
He was putting up his feet because he thought he could retire,
But the telephone rang it was ringing off the hook,
And what do you know it was Dr. Cook,
He said, "Man get on your feet you better make some tracks,
You better get to moving and them's the facts,"
The doctor said his orders were to, "Start out real slow,
Then after a spell you really got to go,
Just shake your hips and move em all about!"
The doctor he said with a bellicose shout,
Old dad hung up the phone to his wife he said,
"That old Dr. Cook must be out of his head,"
Then his dear wife said as she took off his cap,
"Honey don't be so cranky it's time for your nap,"
And my old dad he dreamed of his golfing and sports,
And of current events and the weather reports,
Of his days as an athlete of fishing and then,
He slept like the slumber of two hundred men,
His wheezing and snoring nearly brought down the house,
He woke with a shaking and words from his spouse,
"Honey wake up 'cuz your snoring's severe,
Now go take your walk doctors orders you hear?"
My old dad then quickly was up on his feet,
According to his wife his retirement was complete.

Happy Father's Day, Dad!

I was a lucky one. I had my Dad for 64 years. He died two years ago at 91. He raised my brothers and I by himself from the time we were five. He lost one son, thanks to war, but saw two of his children retire.

He taught me to hunt and fish and love the Great Outdoors. He taught me to be a lady and how to say no and mean it. He taught me to care about the world and the people in it.

Our politics and beliefs in how the world should be diverged. He never became any less a Dad. He always knew what really was the most important. It all starts with family.

My stepdad, an old Navy man, looking right at home on the bridge of the once mighty battleship Iowa. During the Korean war he drove his LST full of tanks onto the beach-head an Inchon.

This is what they loaded into the main 16' guns. Silk packs full of powder with a shell at the end. Here he's imitating Slim Pickens at the end of Dr. Strangelove. The security guy didn't get it, and informed him that he was sitting on the charge backwards.

I'll be sending a bill to my lawyer daughter.

I should charge her lawyer rates, actually.

Much chagrin, but it's kinda normal.

Life goes on.

Is there such a thing as a "Jewish father" routine?

I found a California Angels ball cap on Old 99 earlier, all dried out and full of sand. I had it with me when I arrived at the bear-proof dining establishment just before the crowd of celebrating happy fathers and their tribes began their blitzkrieg.

I thought about giving it to Baby Bear, but Mama Bear was horrified when I capped Junior and Papa Bear seemed peeved. He must be an Oakland A's fan.
Happy Father's Day, people!!

The It was a rough weekend.

Our daughter in law was in the hospital for a week with C diff, a highly contagious intestinal infection. She had a lot of other problems as well but she went unconscious last Tuesday and went into a coma and had to be intubated on Friday, and was taken to the ICU. She was transferred to another hospital yesterday for more tests and we went to see her there again today in their ICU.

Good news is she is starting to come out of the coma today and they took out the breathing tube also. She is awake a few minutes at a time and has uttered a few expletives at the staff. Bad news is that they have found a mass in her brain in the left frontal lobe. It may have been there for some time but doctors are focused on curing her C diff and getting her ambulatory again. First things first I guess.

It's going to be a long recovery process for her and a big adjustment for the family. Dealing with this is difficult but grandma and I (papa) are helping with giving rides and moral support for now.

Happy Father's Day, all.

I put this on the unhappy Dad's thread by accident....

My Dad, and my son.

My Dad is a master of kindness. My pops retired as a senior VP for B of A. He got into banking as a teller for Wells Fargo here in San Jose. Knocked me out, and my bro. Went to work for Bank Of America and kept climbing the ladder.

From a bank teller at Wells Fargo! He was asked to lead operations in Italy, Hong Kong, Sydney, and New Delhi for a while.

And he dragged me along for the ride. Pretty f*#king sucky at the time, but very cool in retrospect.

I liked it. Just hard to move that much.

He gave me more than most men can ever give their kids. And he had a good ride too, but also sacrificed a lot for us.

He knows I know this. I just hope to give my kid such a great thing.

EDIT; What;s really funny after I look at these pics is the irony. My Dad used to have to beg us to pose in front of "history" in Rome or wherever. Now he can't even muster a look at the camera...He's not that way, I just catch him off guard!

Funny though. He'd catch the irony if I brought it up. He has amazing pictures of me I totally forgot about. He was always filming, recording his travels with his family.

It's only now I realize how much he achieved. Many in my family don't realize how much he sacrificed at work to let us experience what we did. My father is very proud of that. And he fuking should be.

He's just an Italian kid from New York....

I should write a book really. My Mom is from Oklahoma, and was drop-shipped into Italy with us as a new American family. It was great, and hilariou.
