Cool!
On a humorous note, I saw this in reference to Miura on Twitter this morning:
"An 80-year-old has climbed Everest. Apparently the queue is now so bad he was actually 73 when he started."
Hahaha!

Fabulous.
Hope to those of us aging. May he always need a parachute to slow him down. Life fully lived...

Proud to read of this, and yes there is an 81 year old also going for it, and I hope he makes it as well. Well done sir I admire your spirit.

I went climbing in Asia last year. The approach was long and steep, many parts of the trail were steep granite steps.
The trail was flooded with old, grey-haired Asian couples, decked out in the latest outdoor fashions with trekking poles...
And they SMOKED me time and time again on the steeps.
Contrast that memory with the image of your typical American:

Another Japanese was not so lucky. Sketchy reports are coming in of a Japanese on the Northeast ridge of Everest who took off his clothes and attacked the group's Sherpas before staggering off and collapsing. Clearly the poor man was suffering from high altitude pulmonary edema. Still, one more bizarre episode in a bizarre season on Everest.

Miura is a wonderful human being. In 1964 he came to the Kilometro Lanciato, the speed skiing competition in Cervinia, Italy, and we became friends. He fell down 5 times at over 100 mph in Cervinia that year, and he always got back up for another run, and he always smiled. He is generous, intelligent, authentic and a great conversationalist about any subject you care to pursue. I always think of Miura as exemplifying the spirit of the Samurai, a Samurai for peace, good feelings and high achievement, and I congratulate him for his latest one.
