Really Jimmy?

You know me. Personal happiness? Camping with my kid and wife. Climbing a route with nobody around. Fishing off a boat with no perceived time-limits. Taking a nap on the couch with a dog at my feet, kid in my arms.

Life is simple and good if you open your eyes.

Friends, community and climbing, in that order. Recent studies in Blue Zone areas of the world where people regularly live to be over a hundred, have shown the importance of community.

"In fact, the world’s longevity all-stars living in the original Blue Zones® areas enjoy deep life-long friendships. They share their lives and healthy habits with one another, and the result is a happier, healthier community of individuals. " (from the Blue Zones Project Web site)

Yesterday I sent two new routes in Skaha, with a 63 year old friend who just established a 5.12B. A few days before, climbed some 5.11's with a 67 year old Calgarian. In a few weeks look forward to watching John Fantini climb a few 5.12 routes for his 70 birthday.

Happy, old climbers! I'm the kid in the bunch at 61.

Here's my take; I encounter things on a daily basis that seem like a brick wall. Usually financial in nature, I'm poor.

But, here's where I find happiness, I've done everything I could do, so whatever happens from that point on, I accept it.

Beyond that, I find happiness in knowing that I live my life respectfully.

Short is the time that remains of your life
Live as on a mountain...

If you're searching happiness
you've lost it

as long as you keep searching
you won't find it

Just forget about happiness...

and then it will be there
once in a while...

Just let it go...

it's a gift...
a luxury...

What a beautiful thread! And, it's illuminating and inspiring to see what has been shared here.

Here's what I've been playing with lately and it's a really gratifying practice.

If you want to make others happy, practice compassion.
If you want to make yourself happy, practice compassion.

I really like some of the responses here.

Another mantra that helps sometimes:

Happiness is a way of travel, not a destination.

My secret to happiness is in my pants. My pants' pocket. I've got a pocket full of platitudes. Here is one I blatantly stole from Thucydides:

"the secret to happiness is freedom, and the secret to freedom is courage"

or something like that
