First time I've ever been live at the end of a tour race. Awesome! I was on the final sharp turn to the finish line. Two riders were just ahead of the pack. The energy they exude is Awesome. Got a couple great pics.

Working Mother's Day turned out to be a blessing. The guys let me go watch the end of the race which was @ 3 blocks from the shoppe.

Cheers all! lynnie

And you got paid!

I've seen well over a hundred pro bike races ( there's a stage race here in Redlands here every year, the #2 guy today, Francisco Mancebo, won overall here last month ), and it never gets old!

Whee hoo, that was a great finish, yay Westra.

It looked like the heat was a big factor today. We'll see what happens tomorrow.

Wondered if you were out there Dee ee.

Hope you enjoy. Wish we could generate more crowd numbers. This thing rocks. But I did talk to several organizers after their meeting tonight and they said they were delighted with the support our little city of Escondido gave them.

Northward about 5-7 days. Lots to do and watch up there. Cyclists doing Tioga and Sonora Passes along with skateboarders like Patrick that fly them also.

Appreciating all the reports from the field folks!

As for the urge to compete to win at any cost, it goes all the way back to the beginning, when the 1904 winner, Garin, was disqualified for allegedly taking a train during one of the stages. Here is a funny article about all of it with some interesting context:

http://huckberry.com/blog/posts/the-tour-de-france-s-first-and-most-daring-cheat

Garin claimed to have won the first TdF (1903 and apparently legitimately) by "fueling himself on quarts of red wine, oysters, and a mixture of coffee & Champagne." Now that just happens to be my exact food regimen for all kinds of training. Somehow it's not working for me, but I don't care!

I wonder how many riders were hooked up to saline drips all night? All of em if they're smart.

I would venture to say today's stage will have a lot of negative racing by the bunch, once the days break gets away, they'll piano till they have to ride. But ohhh the drama that will unfold on the final climb up to the tramway.

It takes a yeoman's duty to even stand by the roadside cheering them on in temps like they'll see today.

bhilden,

You wouldn't have the scoop on which team got up to use the restroom the most times last night, would you? My money is on those guys. They're well hydrated.
