Even the USB ports are built in now.
Be aware not all USB ports are equal for charging. Some are 1 amp and will charge most phones and pods. IPads and some other devices require higher amp USB but they look exactly the same, fit the same then after ab hour you see they aren't charging....arggggh.

Edit. You can also get universal fm transmitters that plug into the headphone jack for a cheaper price. . I could never get good quality with those, especially in urban areas with so many FM stations conflicting with what I had it tuned too. I also found the unit clunky sticking out of the car charger...kept knocking it out. Hopefully they have improved...

I'm getting a myPOD delivered on Thursday morning. It doesn't sing, but having the start of our 3 month road trip only two weeks away is music to my ears.
My kids both tried the FM transmitter and the reception/quality was horrible. I will probably invest in the wired cassette thingy to plug into my iPhone, which clips into a mount located just over the stereo so that I can access the tune selection and GPS from the driver seat.

I use a USB drive with my music, and an audio book, downloaded right off my computer. Bought a new stereo a few years back and it had a port for the USB. They aren't that much, it was like $250 installed with new speakers.
Can't stand iTunes or apple products.

if you just want it for music for your vehicle then the nano is an excellent choice.
the set up I have I use an older nano.
I have my iPad for iPad things.
my iPhone (with music) for iPhone things.
my MacBook Pro for MacBook Pro things.
and my new bitchin i7 3.4GHz 27" 1G fusion iMac for iMac things
I hate apple products ;-)
oh and i have an older iPhone 3GS I use essentially as an iPhone though it's been jailbroken and unlocked so i can use it in other countries if I get a sim.
Edit: and what someone else said (sorta). get the ipod or whatever from apple and then buy the rest of the stuff on amazon
Double Edit: the iPad mini does look cool (though I don't have a use for one)

I use a 120gig iPod in my car , it gives me a shuffle larger than many radio stations. Black 47- Brahms. A 4gig iPod shuffle for running, Biking,soloing, a g4 PowerBook for my legacy files iPad 64 and iphone 4s day to day, and soon a beefier macbookpro for writing /photos /archives/ major software. All backed up Into various terra byte memory sinks. Apple for the goods, third party for connectors. Fm tuners etc.

Probably your best bet! If the mini is like the regular size they require the beefier USB charger...2 amp, I believe. Just make sure the USB car charger is the beefier one that can charge Ipads.
I don't have a mini and I thought I was splurging when I got an IPAD. More use out of that baby than anything. And with the "cloud" all my pictures, music, books sync with all my other Apple products. So if I download something on my Iphone, or I pod it shows up on the Ipad and all vice versa.
I think you'll love it. If they have a 3g or 4g cellular model you might consider that. It's wonderful on the road to have internet connectivity via cell phone service when you aren't near any cafes etc. When I'm not driving I can download music, books, browse the web, watch You Tube etc.

I have a tape deck converter thing for my Sienna too, works fine. Especially for audio books / talking yo don't need the best fidelity. I've had issues with FM transmitters pulling in a radio station instead of my music, so I stick with a wired connection.
If you want to go cheap get a used Nano off ebay for $50. That's all you need. You can get a car charger on ebay for under $10.
But my iPod lives in an iPod boombox now. I haven't taken it out once since I got my iPhone 4 years ago. The iPhone IS an iPod, plus a phone, GPS, and 100,000 other things (Apps).
An iPad is a big iPhone without the phone and an iPod touch is an iPhone without the phone. But the iPad is much better for reading, watching videos, etc because the screen is so much bigger.
iPad's are great, it's like being able to access every book ever written, every movie or TV show, every web page, 100,000 apps, music, in the palm of your hand. iPads can be wifi only (for use at home or starbucks) or wifi and 3G cellular data, but they you have to pay for a data plan, which adds up.
I'm still more impressed with the iPhone than anything else. It does everything an iPad does but fits in your pocket. The convenience is unbelievable for directions, looking up businesses, information, etc.
I have my iPhone with me all the time, and plug it into the car and put it in a mount on the dashboard. I have my iPad usually at home sitting next to me for reading, browsing the web, games, videos, etc.
In Cali you can get a ticket for having a phone in your hand for anything! I'm not sure if an iPad would be similar, but safety wise it's a good idea anyway. It's much better to have an iPhone or iPod mounted on your dash where you can glance down and skip to the next song etc., rather than down on your center console where you have to really take your eyes of the road to do anything. Plus an ipad sitting there is going to be a projectile in an accident.

Hopefully you are getting the USB digital camera adapter. You can then load pics from a digital camera directly to the IPad. Awesome way to browse pics in something larger than camera screen.

Note! I just bought an iPad USB car reader @ radio shack for $9.95! Pretty sure the ones from Cupertino are more price heavy!!

Yeah gotta keep those Apple Execs in their mega yachts! I got mine from Staples or something like that for something like 12.95. Never thought about Radio Shack. The new I Pads, which I think includes the mini has that new "Lightening" connector which supposedly doesn't work with the 30 pin standard connector ... hopefully after market add ons are in the stores now and not just available from Apple.

this is what you want to connect to your car stereo through fm transmitter mode. i have used every gadget out there, the cassette deck tape connector, all sorts of different cable connectors and this is by far THE BEST. it pairs to your device through blue tooth (which your new ipad has) and then transmits through fm to your car stereo. the sound is awesome! no interference EVER. sounds like i'm playing a cd right on the stereo. far superior sound quality to any other cable based device. you can play/pause/skip through tracks right on the device. pair it up through blue tooth and then leave the blue tooth on your device turned on. as soon as you power up your car and the device is within 10 meters it automatically connects. no need to plug it in. i have it paired to my iphone 5. as soon as i turn the car on it connects and then i press the play button and listen. do not even have to take the phone out of my pocket. it is a hands free device and can make phone calls too if paired to a phone. has a built in usb charger for charging so no need for a separate charger.

i highly recommend this device :)
if you can use a macbook you will have NO problem figuring out any other apple device. ipod/ipad/iphone. not sure what slr was ranting about but apple is the easiest most intuitive product out there. of course of you are trying to use with a windows machine....well yeah that is a different story......

^^^^Awesome! Didn't know the adapters had gotten so sophisticated. I stayed away from Bluetooth for a long time because early Bluetooth just sucked. The last six months I've been getting everything all synched up via Bluetooth when in my car and I'm loving it and it works beautifully! Ditto to the audio quality....I didn't change car speakers and it sounded like the premium systems I see all the youngsters have. I was astounded how easy the Bluetooth synced up my Iphone, Ipad, Ipod, whenever I am in the car I can use any of them by just rotating a dial and picking the "device" I want to use. And if I get a phone call, voila! The audio system mutes off and the speakers pick up the call and I just talk.
Oh poo, makes me want to buy more electronics

You can get a stereo with a USB port that interfaces with damn near any mp3 playa (iLame sucks) for about $60. Easy to install if you know anything at all about eeeeeee-lectricity.

If your car system has Bluetooth (or you can get an adapter) and you sync it with your Ipad Bluetooth you will think you are in a concert hall. My Toyota also has JBL and I've always really liked them...synced with Bluetooth...like nothing I have ever heard. My Audible books sound like the narrator is sitting with me in a soundproof library reading just to me...it's stunning.
Good luck...those little gizmos take some getting used to when you're used to the "Daddies of all Apples" I suspect you'll love it eventually.

yeah it may hurt at first but it becomes a much more enjoyable experience the more experienced you get.
Too small, too hard to hold, couldn't get it to sync with the MacDaddy you gotta be gentle with it, then it will grow on ya....
can anyone tell me why Bluetooth syncing creates such a wonderful rich sound without buying new speakers? it's a digital connection not an analog one. that means basically it works or it doesn't. there is no degradation of information upon transfer between devices.
