Very sad and screwed up. It happened three hours after finishers crossed, apparently.

First guess would be a terrorist attack. Lots of people concentrated in one place makes a good target. Luckily no one was killed.

* edit: lots of people in one place plus lots of tv cameras already there ... but it does seem to have happened a few hours late.

Glad no one was killed, not what I heard at first, hopefully that is still the case, surprising though.

Yeah, figured that, Ron. Although, 5 hours is pretty darn slow for a marathon, the majority will be through. But I'm not aware if they stagger things so that the difference between winners and the average runner would be greater.... All that aside, it is a tragedy no matter the sequence of events.

I woulda been totally safe Jeebs,, eight -ten hours er so. (on SLED of course)..

Boston Marathon is Americana, and i wouldnt be surprised to see the ME folks behind this, or just yet another nutcase.

The Boston Marathon is not an open event. Runners need to qualify, so three hours after the winners should be after everyone finished. Still, I need to withhold judgment until I get more news. Graffiti in Rattlesnake Canyon, Bombing (?) at the Boston Marathon. Is good under universal attack by evil?

I wouldn't speculate yet. Too many nut cases and scum bags in the world for that. Plus, the ME folks usually get the timing right.

Have they ruled out exploding gas mains and the like?

Terrible stuff, I hope zero fatalities holds up and that the damage is just a flesh wound for those who got caught in it.

THree hours after the winners finished there would most certainly still be lots of people running. There are 27000 people running the event and many people don't start until an hour after the winners start.

NY Post reports at least 12 dead.

Other reports floating out there of 1 or more additional devices which did not detonate.

This is f-ked up.

Let's see: if I remember right you need to be able to run an 8 min pace for 26 mi to qualify for this race. That's 208 minutes or about 3.5 hours. That should be the pace of the slowest runners.

I just wikipedia'd this and the fastest time for this race was about 2 hours. So if the last runners cross start line 1 hour after the first ones, two hours later, you would still have 30 minutes to go before the slowest runners should be finished.

So, the explosions occurred 30 minutes before the end of the race. It would be a weird coincidence if a gas main blew up then, my guess is terrorist attack.

from an article:

The explosions went off more than four hours after the start of the menís race, which meant that there were still several thousand runners yet to finish the race.

Multiple "devices" have been found according to reports.

No continuing fire after explosions suggests it was NOT a gas main.
