First guess would be a terrorist attack. Lots of people concentrated in one place makes a good target. Luckily no one was killed.

* edit: lots of people in one place plus lots of tv cameras already there ... but it does seem to have happened a few hours late.

Glad no one was killed, not what I heard at first, hopefully that is still the case, surprising though.

The Boston Marathon is not an open event. Runners need to qualify, so three hours after the winners should be after everyone finished. Still, I need to withhold judgment until I get more news. Graffiti in Rattlesnake Canyon, Bombing (?) at the Boston Marathon. Is good under universal attack by evil?

THree hours after the winners finished there would most certainly still be lots of people running. There are 27000 people running the event and many people don't start until an hour after the winners start.

NY Post reports at least 12 dead.

Other reports floating out there of 1 or more additional devices which did not detonate.

This is f-ked up.

Let's see: if I remember right you need to be able to run an 8 min pace for 26 mi to qualify for this race. That's 208 minutes or about 3.5 hours. That should be the pace of the slowest runners.

I just wikipedia'd this and the fastest time for this race was about 2 hours. So if the last runners cross start line 1 hour after the first ones, two hours later, you would still have 30 minutes to go before the slowest runners should be finished.

So, the explosions occurred 30 minutes before the end of the race. It would be a weird coincidence if a gas main blew up then, my guess is terrorist attack.

No continuing fire after explosions suggests it was NOT a gas main.

I hope the suspected bombers only have ties to countries or organizations we've already had wars with ...

There are reports of a third explosions occurring but there have also been reports of a controlled one by the bomb squad near the library.

It sure looks like an ammonium nitrate explosion to me. Wide and white.

Relatively, and thankfully, those things looked pretty weak and amateurish.

Damnit. They should have made the race a bomb free zone, and updated the library to one too.
