Hello Fellow Woodfords Climbers,

I would like to join the festivities on May 25th. Besides rope, dope, gear, and beer what should I bring? I was thinking firewood and food. What type of food should i bring?

Thanks,

Thanks Ron. We need some money for the pig. I can give $100.00.

Also, have we decided on the location? I don't know the area, so please help.

Do we need wood, or can we pick some up in the forest?

I will bring a table and chairs to sit four.

Dan said across the highway from the "bridge to nowhere"..So its either there or on the road to nowhere, just after the bridge, but there usually campers in there. Wood WUD be a good idea it will take some to roast a piggie!

Lots of deads Mt. Mohogahy ...makes a fire hot enough to fold steel. Kenny check out that area across from the bridge to nowhere... the parking area for Whites Wall. If you heading down the road it's on the right after the turn left over the bridge. Drive onto the dirt then right up a hill. A Huge flat spot an old staging area for log collection lies above the main bridge for highway 88 just upsream from the fisherman's bridge. Can't be seen from the road and that could be kinda nice with the riff-raff that definately show up. Dan

Awesome guys that its finally coming together. 25th is great. Ill arrange for the pork and beans and cook em up. Anything else ill leave up to you guys. Head count ASAP so I know how much to get. I plan on cooking the pig/pork above ground in a "pit" that I make. We just need to find a place now to circle the wagons and do it
Shawn
PM me for any questions or requests

I will also bring a small generator((Honda)

Ron, that looks like the right spot to meh. If the trailer won't make it up there maybe the parking area at Cloudburst, past the road leading to the apprroach trail could work. Not as big but for the first annual Woodfest it could suffice. Dan

Thanks for checking that spot Kenny. Ill try to head up there in the next week or so and check it out and Ill throw my 2 cents in for "Place O Pig" Will need a little head count soon to get the pig ordered.

Woodfest,, a spinoff of WOODSTOCK. Named Wood for the canyon , not necessarily for "woodage".. And i should note that ive seen many a WOOD-ETTE climbing in the "FORDS", such as Areili and others. They too should show up for this woodstorical first. A veritable power house of knowledge of things youve never wanted to learn! But will be amazed when you do!

Here's the conversation I had with my wife about WOODFEST,

Tad: Hey babe some climbers are throwing a pig feed party and climbing get
together on May 25th to raise $ for a new guidebook to the area and we
are invited, you want to go?

Mo (Maureen): That sounds like fun, where is it at?

Tad: Woodfords Canyon, It would be about a 5 hr. drive.
We would spend the night and return Sunday.

Mo: Oh, (long pause) well maybe, let me think about it.

Tad: If you don't want to go is it OK if I do?

Mo: Well I guess, but isn't that Memorial Day weekend?

Tad: ya it is.

Mo: lemme think on it a while, we may be doing something with
Hannah (daughter) and family.

So it's still kinda sketchy if I/we are able to throwdown with the WOODYCREW.

I'll try to sell her on it in the meantime.

BTW, This looks to be an EPIC in the making,
Hope I can make it!

Carry on,
Tad

I just went up to the area Dan suggested for the party. I think it is the best place to have it with the largest areal for camping etc. It may be a little bit I a bitch to get my trailer up there but I will make it happen. The area is directly across from old bridge that is on the north side of 88. Big flat area that cannot be seen from the highway. Road up to the area is not that bad.
Ron, I'm assuming we would need I get a "fire permit" or they could shut us down? Figured you would know about this.

A five minute walk gets one to the closest climbing... the new stuff that Kenny and Mr. Big put up. A bit further is an additional six climbs. There is a possibility that the better half and I may make the trip up there - it kind of depends on if I dash to the Valley for the Donini NIAD or not. I won't have the $ to make two long trips in a month.

Heh Shawn I found a completely dead Mt. Mohagony tree very close to the proposed site... Ther's plenty o' wood out there no pun intended. After all the embers are dead we can spread the ashes around (to be eco and all) no need to bring wood they be plenty. Located some fine camping spots across the road, since fishing season has begun an early arrival on the friday before the event might yeild some good spots before the fisherman get "em all. Nine climbers of questionable characture out there on Saturday this event could be ugly! D.K.

Prep table. Several coolers of ice, paper plates, trash can, quiet generator for all the musical needs.

If someone wants to take on a potato salad and cole slaw that would be great, deserts?

Cloudburst canyon will work for the fest. Went up this morning and there is an area I can pull my trailer and supplies to by the lower parking. Its "blocked" off by a few twigs but there is a flat area south of the lower parking that has a couple great areas for me to do the cooking .

So long story short....plan on cloudburst canyon parking area for the fest

You You'll find some 5.7-5.8ish stuff out there, but most routes are rated by Chim Chim and are usually 1/2 a grade harder than what "normal" people would rate them (Dan is a really good climber, so 5.7-5.9 comes pretty easy for him!). Is Sharkey's still open? My mom worked there in the early to mid 80s. I remember one night when I was 18 or so, a buddy of mine and I stopped in for some food. Sharkey drug us into the bar to hang out and drink with him haha. Fun times. It's going to be interesting to be back up in that area; I spent part of my younger years living and going to school in Walker. Haven't been there since the early 90s.

Im going to bring something special to auction to go for helping the cost of the guide.

It is a six foot section of an 11mm mamut vintage 1992/3, which will be tied with a double fishermans. This rope was used by one of the Woodfords Greats, Mr Dan Osman. A 5x7 color pic i took of him on this very rope will also be included, signed by me with the route and date. Ive let only a few of these loops go. They have "CHI" . I will auction at the gig- sat afternoon/eve. Dano led, lead on free stance bolted, rapped, and did multi pitch routes at Calveras and hammer on this rope. Never been washed but fairly new still! ;-)

that is awlll, carry on..

in addition, i MAY have a few new copies of the old guide if i can get them whipped up before then. 20 per copy going to the upcoming guide expense fund.

Just saw this...

Yeah, dude, it's on! You spent a lot of time licking my and Seth's balls as Farouk.

Seth's reportedly going to the fest, btw, but is a pacifist.

and by pacifist Jebus means I'll wait till your sleeping and then set your tent on fire. :)

Ha, Farouk, who woulda thunk it...

Was Wonderful to meet the many of you that came to the first Woodfest! Suffice to say cloudburst canyon has never seen such a crowd at the bottom..

Monkeys were 'sendin' all over the place. Unfortunately, there was a rock fall victim on one of the new routes. He was struck while belaying when a climber dislodged a toaster size chunk. Good news is there were no broken bones but some good road rash on arm and leg. The victim never dropped the belay though-- a GOOD HEAD on that guy. (apologies as i didnt get his name.) But he had two first responders and a Dr present at the base, and was in very good hands from start to finish as a large group walked him down.

THe event had a STELLAR PIG roast by Shawn and Fiance, Renada, which could have fed a medium sized army! It was one of the few quiet time during the feed as all jaws seemed bent on destroying some of that fine swine Shawn prepared!

The new climbs Kenny has been working on (short approach!) were being enjoyed by many, as was the classics such as OTTD and other routes on One of these days wall.

Meeting all these younger Woodbarians left me with the feeling that the Canyon is in good hands. Nice Trails have been carved out of the thick N facing brush - and vigorous cleaning of the newer routes makes them quite nice. The enthusiasm for such a special little canyon lives , not just in Dan, Mark and all the others that have been around a while there, but in the newer "Woodbarians" as well. Also good to meet climb2skis Dad, at 80 years old, he has had quite the adventurous life!

We raised some duckets to aid in the New guide ChimChim is working on! Even that wandering Mustelid MOUSE from MERCED showed up with some very cool auction items. A round of appluase was given to all there over the recent rock removal project that was thwarted as well! ( much thanks to Kenny T and Super topo)..

Tad,, Moosedrool , Vegas Climber , Mouse and many other STers were there, and i regret having to return to work missing todays goings on. (CHIM,, i forgot to get that box of wooden treasures too dangit! Youve a good eye for artsy chunks! )

What was obvious was that GOOD times where being had by all. Weather was great (for once) and food and company ,, simply STELLAR.

From the "fossil crowd" I thank all for letting me be part of it!

ps,, i dont have any pics, as i forgot the camera.. But im sure some will post up, there were plenty other cameras about!

Great times, great people, and I still need an army to finish the pig. It was great to see soooo many generations of climbers up there sharing our passion.
The accident was unfortunate and Im glad to hear he had no serious injuries......he's gonna be sore for a while.
Many people said it was a wake up call for them to wear a helmet on the ground as well.

During the medical treatment of him a harness was probably thrown in to a pack by mistake. If you find it let me know so I can get it back to him.

Will post up some pictures later as I need to get some pig juice off of me and hit the shower.

Thanks everyone for a great time and hope to do it again next year............

I left couple of slings and binders at the top of the climb I was doing, someday I am sure I will get them back.
I have not had time to read all the posts above, so thanks again everybody.

We talked bout hidden "nooks" of flat sand and rock rims. About "Lightning dream" and other Dano creations during the WOODFEST. You can call me strange, but there were multiple times i felt a presence. One that had me jerking up at the stone to look.. Came away with the feeling of a spirit being PROUD, proud of the newer generations that now occupy and go forth unto the new. Proud of the manner in which they do it.. Yeah dudes, dudettes,, he was up there with us..

Hey all!

Christina and I just got back to the home place, after some great climbing in the Alabama Hills today. I wanted to jot down a couple lines here real quick, before I go back to cleaning up the junk show that is our Jeep at the moment.

First off, thank you SO much for putting on a stellar event. Shawn and Dan, thanks for the time you spent cooking and the time you have spent developing a wonderful area. Kenny T, this area is magical - keep up the great work.

It was so awesome to finally meet Ron in person, and was a huge surprise to see Mouse make an appearance - happy bday Mouse, sorry we didn't have time to talk more.

I'm really glad to hear that Jim is going to be OK - please pass on my best wishes. Jim took a huge hit, and as he was dropping, he gripped that rope as hard as he could and fell onto it. That man can belay for me anytime - he is the definition of a world class belayer.
Tyler, thanks for your assistance. Tyler took over the belay, got Jim's partner lowered, and helped get Jim stabilized. When I asked Tyler to run and get my big med kit, I swear he was back in 5 minutes. Everyone there did an amazing job making sure Jim was well taken care of.

It was a great time, in an amazing area, with great people both on and off the Taco. Can't wait for the guide book, and I really hope we can do this again next year - Christina and I will be there!

Edit to add; I brought a couple special guests with us. I had my "Paul's Ball" with me, and left Paul with an awesome view of the canyon on top of a great new 5.7. On Saturday, I also took along Ian's Sticht plate, and it worked as well as new.

Hey,, i just wanted to thank those at the first WOODFEST, that gave me such positive feedback from my old guide. It was cool to hear that my humorous approach was appreciated, as well as the pains taken in tracings of photos for the topos. No one had any issue ever in finding the routes was what i heard. Some of those drawings were from the efforts of thirty different angles before getting the RIGHT one lol! Chim probably feels the same pain at the moment..

Ron - first off, thanks for the guide, it's still the best guide we've got so far. After seeing an actual copy of the guide at Woodfest, I think you should consider doing a super hi-res scan of your topos to replace the .pdf online. The online version has really small print and if you try to make the image bigger before printing, it's totally unreadable.

Just a thought.
