Any of the tribe shed any rays of light or further k-nowledge on Laytons lust for leaf? An astonishing bit of our history and if you try it, you too can feel like walking up sandstone. I devoured 1 head of lettuce and felt empowered. Imagine chomping 2 and marching up said wall of choice!

Spoke with him last night after he got home from a week in the hospital.
He is feeling very weak and not inclined to chat.
My understanding is that he tried a lettuce diet when he had valley fever, a fungal infection that damaged his lungs long ago.

My thoughts and prayers to Layton who I always looked up to as a climber who epitomized adventure and boldness. I shall chomp a head of lettuce shortly. It works !!

First I want to wish Layton all the best, hope and that he feels better soon.
In July, 1961, I went on a climbing trip to Glenwood Canyon with Layton, Huntley Ingalls, and Sue Jones. Layton brought his food supply with him: 2 boxes filled with heads of lettuce. The climbs in Glenwood didn't pan out because the wall he and Huntley were attempting was *r*o*t*t*e*n* and dangerous. By the time we returned to Boulder after 3 days of fukking around in Glenwood Canyon, the lettuce was all gone, and Layton and I went to RMNP to do the Northcutt-Carter on Hallett Peak. On the way out of town, we stopped at McDonalds and stoked up on grease, courtesy of Tex Bossier, the counter man that evening. We powered up Hallett the next day on cheeseburgers, shakes, fries, and Cokes. So much for the "lotsa energy in lettuce!" We did the Northcutt-Carter in just a hair over 3 hours, driving and pulling pitons. Shortly thereafter, I had a hot date with the Army for 3 years.

Millis used to have Bossier-fits.
One Friday in Spring '70 we at Apathy House and Nick Coffee from down the street left Picific Grave to drove iver to the Ponnacles. We deliverately set out to capture heads of lettuce, GIANT HEADS, mind you, in the Salinas along the way to Soledad.
The lettuce-head feast was very memorable, the night VERY F. COLD, and the next day we did several useles routes, not just one.
Kor, blimey!

Do you recall the year? Kor did the Yellow Wall route with Charles Roskosz in 1964 (?). Dave Lyman and I hiked up to the boulderfield with one of my telescopes to watch that event. It was a 16x Navy Spyglass, I recall. Other than that, the other ascent I recall him doing was a Winter climb of a Diamond route with Wayne Goss.
Time has diminished my recollections of these wonderful achievements.

Mabybe a bit off point, but I believe John Salathe also consumed lots of lettuce and was a back-to-earth vegetarian. Here's Wikipedia with some info:
"In 1963, he returned to the United States [from Switzerland] and spent 20 years wandering through the mountains and deserts of California, maintaining his vegetarian diet based largely on wild grasses and herbs that he sought out, and preaching his religious beliefs.

dang i thought this was about hippy lettuce, oh well,
lettuce makes you produce massive quantities of stomach acid,
if your into acid, not LSD,
never climbed on LSD, went scuba diving on mushrooms once.
almost drowned from laughing at 50 feet, get well Layton!

We need an Ament comment or two here..
Well, ament to add something about how for the last few years of his life his favorite food was bacon.
And the restaurant of choice in Kingman—iHop, Kountry Kitchen, one or two others—was the one that most reliably cooked their bacon to something close to Kor's ideal of baconic perfection.

Ah yes, the "Kor breakfast".
The first time I made breakfast I scrambled the eggs because there were 7 people and not enough pan for over easy.
Layton turned up his nose.
Each subsequent time I improved but never quite got it right.
Finally in May, 2010 I got it all right when he and Kevin visited;
Eggs over medium but still soft, rye toast, his favorite brand of bacon ($34.00 per pound!) baked and dried not fried, and home fries just right.
I presented it before him with a flourish, knowing that I had finally put it together.
He sighed. "The doctors say no more potatoes."
I looked at Kevin and he gave me one of those 'you just can't win' smiles shaking his head.
