The harder the route, the less likely one will need a double length sling.

That's why I usually carry two.

I never have this problem, perhaps because I always keep a carabiner on each double-length sling, which serves to keep the doubled loops of equal length.

+1 That method has served me well for 45 years and counting. When I want the double runner, I simply grab the 'biner to which it is attached.

I almost never have that problem, so there's something going on with your technique. I usually keep a single biner on each sling, but even when I don't, I can usually just pull one off the other. Try tinkering with your set-up on the ground and get the kinks ironed out before you get up on the sharp end. Good luck!
