hey there say, i just had donna post this... i was afraid i'd not get back on line for WEEKS, :O

last night this odd thing happened.... i don't know WHEN OR HOW...

1: i turned off computer, after getting off line...

2: came BACK to turn it on, hours later and it was STILL ONE,
but--it was updating and RE'FIGURING :O

3: i turned it off, by the plug, thinking it would NULLIFY THIS ODD THING!

4: OH, i have not been using internet explorer, either, (if you need to know that)...

5: i put computer back on and the screen went right to:
RECONFIGURING FOR WINDOWS SERVICE PACK 7 :O
6: what is THAT .... I NEVER TOUCHED A THING, AND HAVE NO CLUE...

7: i tried to hit escape, or control/alt/delete... and turned it off

8: stated it again and it said the Reconfiguring did not work, so i was
setting another reconfiguring, back to how it was, :O

9: BOTH TIMES, it said, 'do not turn off computer'

10:well, this reconfiguring thing--was on ALL NIGHT INTO THE MORNING, AND
NO CHANGES...

11: SO THUS--i was now thinking my computer had to go back to the store, and i'd have to pay for someone to FIX IT... AND I WOULD NOT be back
on line for perhaps 3 weeks, or a month :O til i could pay, etc...

12: that is why i called donna, or was going to call ron and ask if
he knew what it might be (just cause i happened to still have ron's number, and did not have anyone other numbers but dwain, donna and ron...

13: well, i REMEMBERED THIS MORNING that jody and two others, have told me to do a SYSTEMS RE-SET...

14: well, as you can see THIS DID WORK! AND HERE I AM ...

15: thank you soooo much donna, for posting, as:
i did NOT WANT you all to think that i just LEFT the ol' taco,
and was 'dissing you all' and the wonderful campfire, or:

that i was ignoring all my emails...
friends are serious businness, not to be ignored, :O

so now... just as i got on line here, i saw this:

windows has loaded a new update, and i went to see if i could cancel this,
before this ALL happened again, and the note on the tool bar (that said that) said:

it cannot be found!!!!! oh, i am soooo thankful...

but what please, you all, can i do to make sure this did not happen
again?????

so also, please, does this mean that i did NOT do anything accidently???

does this mean that widow DID this...

also, where i can go, in computer to PREVENT this from happening again...

i do NOT whatever this service pack 7 is!!!!!

please help...
thank you all for your patience....

ron.... i was going to call you, as, i had your number still in my phone, due to asking you for help about that book a bit ago...

Hi Neebee. If you get a notification of official windows updates and they start going when you try to turn off your computer. I highly recommend letting them finish even if it takes hours. In many cases they can save you severe grief in the future. Security updates and other stuff that you really do need. Also it tends to be a baaad thing to force a shutdown in the middle of these updates.

Just my 2 cents for the future.

Really glad you are up and running again.

For windows 7

Control panel > System and Security > Windows Update > Change Settings

Click (never check for updates) in the drop down menu.

Or disable the service in the services menu ....

Manually download the service packs is much better way than thru the stupid "Automatic Update" service.

The "Automatic Update" service is a dumb ass stupid service and should be disabled.

hey there say, climbski2...

thank you, i never even KNEW this was updating, so i didn't get that option, and WOW, as you said, it SURE went sour, :( BAD, as you said,
when i shut it off... it was a mess, :O

and, you saw the whole story, thanks so much for the advice!

and WERNER! thank you, thank you, thank you !!!

i am doing that now... well, in just a sec...
wish i had done it sooner, a ways back someone had mentioned something
similar, but i was not sure then, if updates were the trouble, or,
something else (at that time... turned out that it was something 'working open' behind the scenes, saving stuff, and eating up all my disc space)...
(that was on the old computer)...

also, edit:
michaeld....

say, thank you for sharing, though, not to worry... :)

these guys are ready to jump in and care...
these are not normal... they are heroes...

they have saved many of us, when we needed info...

god bless, to you, and this eve, and to one and all...

*ps:
say, does anyone know what that windows seven pack thing was?
i sure hope i did not hit someting by accident, but it seems to
have done it ALL BY ITSELF, AND NEVER even warned, me, UNTIL
AFTER THE FACT, :o

THANKS so much, again, werner!
thanks donna, so much, for being there...

but thank you for wanting to help with ideas...
books are good, too, for info...

was going to email, and try to figure out what you were talking about...

been soooo in rush, from this weird stuff and then, to get some paints done,

Don't forget to check about once a week for updates now that you have turned off automatic. :)

Manual is better as It is much nicer to have control when they occur as some updates can really slow you down when you least want it. Or shut you down automatically in the middle of something.

Neebee, sometimes a hammer works best. It may not help your computer out, but it will make you feel much better in the short run if you just take that hammer and smash the computer. Then you can go out and get a new computer! :) I know, I know, its only money...

hey there say, studly, and all...

awwwwwwwww, it is sooooo nice to have such wonderful big brothers as you all!
a HAMMER, of all things...

how about a paper hammer ;) i can glue it to a picture of a computer, and attach a note:

"studly's fixing the ol' computer, and all is well" ...
:) ;))

thanks guys...

say, i STILL cannot get the link in the security to work, to turn the updates
off... but i did get a note show up, asking about some kind of update, but i did not accept it...

don't know why the 'on computer' link to it suddenly stopped working...
:O

climbski2, thanks for the extra update note, too...
this is too far above me, many times, whewwww... :O
