I'll be there doing my Totem Cam Demo thing.

And all the other volunteering of course. Set up and whatever is needed in the morning.

The Facelift is one of the highlights of the year for me.

This seems like the appropriate time to mention the vision, determination, and stamina of the Skinner of Chickens in making the greatest annual gathering of the Tribe.

Thanks Ken!

Only six months and five days to go, except for us early arrivers.

A good time will be had by all.

I've been trying hard to recruit some Canuckleheaded helpers, who could easily do a stint at the FaceLift as the start of autumn climbing and a stay in Camp 4.

So if Skip and Eric are looking after Upper Pines, and Mo and Harrison Yellow Pine, anyone interested in sharing Camp 4 duties?

Unfortunately we won't be attending this year - that's the same week we are going to Kilimanjaro. Kinda bummed to miss Facelift, but theres no way we can take the time off to do both. Will have to pick up some trash on Kili just to keep in the spirit of things.

Hey Big Mike,

Glad you are coming on board. Facelift is a stellar event on this planet. I began attending the first year after my husband went to heaven (2008) and it was a total gift to me. Ken has a fantastic program backed up by incredible volunteers. Even if you are bashful you will find your place in the sun and experience gifts of new friendships and fun.

Peace, Dude. If you (and family?) get there early, I work up in the Tuolumne area and would love to show yo the great expanse of creation up there.

Cheers, lynnie

There is a whole lot more to be done than just pick up garbage. Working the booth at the visitors center for check in , doing set up for the evening program, pour beer, fix pick up sticks, there is so much behind the screens stuff that needs to be done. Besides getting really cool raffle prizes to give away. I am getting some Totem Cams to bring, like I have for the last 2 years. The Facelift is about giving back and there are so many ways to do that.

Managing the FaceLift camping is a formidable task, both in terms of planning and reservations, and seeing that it happens smoothly. We all need to help, especially with the privilege of "free" camping. May I suggest that those requesting camping, especially in Camp 4, be realistic about their plans? That is, don't request more nights and places than you really are going to use, and if your plans change, let the coordinator know asap. If your plans are unsure, it may be better to ask for space in Yeller Pines, where a few campers more or less on one or other night makes less difference, and is less visible.

Space in Camp 4 is at a premium at the end of September. If we don't use all the spaces allotted for the FaceLift, it's rather visible, somewhat embarrassing - and directly affects other climbers. Whether there'll be a change in policy this year, i.e. so that unclaimed spots in Camp 4 are reallocated after one night, isn't my call. If people are realistic about their plans, and live up to them, it won't matter much anyway. Please don't request dates/spaces at Camp 4 unless you're reasonably sure you'll use them. Sure, there'll always be "maybes", but there's room to accommodate them elsewhere.

And yes, my comments on Yosemite plan sent.

-most of the trash is unintentional (saves you from getting pissed at the people who left their trash.)
-you can usually score on some good stuff.
-you are needed-the average visitor can not climb down there to do it-climbers are needed.

Sadly, I don't think Karen and I will be there this year. We are working in Alaska for the summer at the Big Ku Lodge as managers and cooks. This is a remote, off-the-grid lodge in a native inholding in Katmai National Park. Everything at this lodge has been flown in by a float plane. We're located on a bluff at the outlet of Kukaklik Lake, about 60 river miles upstream from King Salmon. Brokedownclimber, you'd be right at home here. We look out on many many square miles of tundra and lakes with the snow covered Katmai mountain in the distance. It's not unlike what the Winds look like from Riverton. The biggest difference between here and Wyoming is that, here, it's 55º and mostly cloudy and rainy all of the time and, instead of antelope, we see bears. Lots of them. People come to Katmai to watch bears and we see many of them in camp every day.

Unlike the Yosemite bears, the grizzlies around here are mostly scared of people. We, no sh#t, shoo them from camp when they wander through. As long as we don't get between them and their salmon, they don't care about us. Yesterday there was a big mama sow with her two cubs rooting around in the burn pit and when I shooed her away, she wandered off about 20', watched me for a few minutes then came back to the pit with her cubs while I was yelling and bangig pots. She ignored me and that bad news for the bear. Next time she comes back I have to shoot her. I've got a loaded .357, sitting on my kitchen counter: the first two slugs are #6 bird shot. The next three are hollow-points.

Wouldn't it be badass to shoot a bear? I'll post a full TR after the action happens.

Karen and I will be celebrating 30 years of marriage in Yosemite at the end of October. We won a gift certificate to the Wawona Lodge at last year's raffle so we'll definitely be there on the 28th, our actual anniversary. We plan to spend a week or ten days in the Valley around that time so I hope to see some of you. As usual, I'll be cooking good food. This time I'll bring my paella pan which will feed 12-15 people, sooooo.

Take care and climb safe.

I think I would use a rifle with a bunch more power and accuracy if I had to take down that bear.

Any chance you could get a hold of a bunch of flash bangs first? 12 gauge with bird shot would give you a bit more range.....

We're located on a bluff at the outlet of Kukaklik Lake, about 60 river miles upstream from King Salmon....

You guys...
I don't want to kill the bear. I want to teach it to stay away from this camp. There's a shitton of salmon swimming up the river about 50' away and they don't need to be picking through a burn pile to chew the labels off of partially burned cans. BTW, the prior manager left a ton of partially burned stuff out there. I've been out there every day re-burning old stuff and pouring used oil into the burn area to get it incinerator hot. In another day or two there will be nothing left for the bears to be attracted to. We will keep a spotlessly clean camp and lodge that we're proud of: one that bears don't care about.

HighTraverse,

The reason Karen and I are the managers now is that the previous ones were truly idiots. Lots of issues, the burn pile being one of the minor ones. Happy to say that mama and cubs have not been back since I shooed them away a few days ago. Other bears have been around but none have been digging in pit. They wander through camp, we yell at them and they run.

They're not like Yosemite bears, that's for sure.

To all sufferers of Facelift Withdrawal.

It's really painful getting from one Facelift to the next. Isn't it? Since 2005 we have had the J T Clean Team that makes it much easier. Something like 20 regulars, joined by other volunteers, come out two to three times each month to pick up litter in JT. We get three to three and a half tons per year,

out of a small village!

Here is one recent outing.

The Team is following the path laid out by Ken.

Looks like a path to the future. Doesn't it?

This year, in the auditorium each evening before the main show, there will be a slide show of activities and people from that day. While you are getting your drinks and socializing you might see yourself and friends picking up trash or working on projects.

I will be taking photographs of as many activities and projects as I can each day. Your photographs will also be welcome, as I know I won't be able to cover all the projects or areas every day. I will be working on photographs and accepting photographs in the registration area before the show each night so that I can hand the files over to the projectionist when the doors to the auditorium open. Stop by to say hi and contribute photos.

No doubt we'll hear soon from Ken about plans for evening events, and special projects - trail and habitat work, and so on. It takes rather a lot of organizing, eh? Anyway, Ken is very good about providing information, once it's available.

A reminder - if you're coming to the FaceLift, and hoping for free camping but haven't arranged anything yet, now is the time to send your request. (If it isn't too late.) Requests to yosemitefaceliftcamping@hotmail.com, and see http://www.yosemiteclimbing.org for more information about camping, and the FaceLift. Be specific as to when you'll arrive, and leave, and where you hope to stay - there's probably less choice now.

If your plans change, before or during the FaceLift, please also notify yosemitefaceliftcamping@hotmail.com, the YCA or someone you know, so arrangements can be adjusted, and perhaps "your" site can be reallocated. Especially Camp 4 - we need to use all the spots we're given.

To judge from previous FaceLifts, there will be entertainment and events at the east auditorium at the Visitor Centre on the Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday evenings. Sunday evening is the wrap up party. Saturday evening is the outdoor concert nearby, ending fairly early - it's also the night of the El Portal autumn party. Having a Yeller Pine potluck on Saturday seems to work quite well. As discussed upthread, it'll take a bit of organizing in terms of food, BBQ, and so on. We've made it work before, so surely we can again. Perhaps six or eight people can commit to a bit of organizing, before and that day?

My preference would be a "by donation to YCA" potluck and BBQ. Entertainment perhaps by jstan - "Further uses for an orange-u-tong". The idea of a swapmeet at the start of the evening also intrigues. Bring any climbing-related stuff and books you no longer need, put your name and a reasonable price on it, proceeds to YCA.

Rumours that the visitor centre clean-up monkeys will be going on strike until they get orange-u-tongs of their own, to show solidarity with their simian brethren, seem improbable. There's an awful lot that goes on to make the FaceLift happen, that isn't particularly visible.

As nita said, just yell out for Ken at the registration tables or politely ask someone where he may be found. He has a cell phone, too. I've used several methods to track him down. Then give him the goodies to donate and he will deal with it most efficiently from there.

Thanks for the planning you've taken upon yourself.

Since there are generally some heavy-weights there, how about a Celebrity Beta Session and Beverage? It would obviously have to be someone who is there for certain days. Just an idea - there are a lot of people who would love some face time with some of our attendees, It would be dependent on some offers by said attendees, of course. Beta for obscure routes, stories, etc. Just going off the cuff, here...

I am having a hard time letting go of "The Gold Stannard" idea, it would have to be an award for Efforts In Trash Pick-up. The Big Guys do it all the time with "miles matching" friend sponsorship - the per-mile/per-pound is not that much of a stretch...

My advice. Let go of it.

Too much variability and it is a form of competition. Trashing is like climbing. It is just fun. Nothing else.

Wednesday in just four hours I got about 700 pounds. Did not even work that hard.

Die of old age before I could get 700 pounds of cigarette butts.

Currently have my eye on eight sofas and eight mattresses. Unbelievably rich territory here.

Only 40 days to go, a bit less for some of us. But Ken, Sharon and a host of helpers have surely been hard at work, planning and preparing. I'll try to summarize arrangements for the FaceLift, based on the foregoing, other threads, and past experience, and update/correct as needed. Possibly useful information. Ken and others can undoubtedly add to this.

Yosemite FaceLift 2013 (Tenth Anniversary!)

 September 24th - 29th, 2013
Yosemite National Park aka Biggus Ditchus
Yosemite Climbing Association, with tons of help from National Park Service, a horde of volunteers, and lots of sponsors.

YCA: http://www.yosemiteclimbing.org/category/events/facelift/yosemite-facelift-%C2%A9-2013

Fun for all, and a good cause!

Camping

There is camping available to volunteers - see the YCA website, or contact yosemitefaceliftcamping@hotmail.com, providing full details. If you haven’t already requested a site, do so now – maybe there are some still available. There are FaceLift campsites in Yellow Pines (group camping), Upper Pines, Camp 4, and Porcupine Flat. All are by advance booking.

If your plans change before or during the FaceLift, send a note to yosemitefaceliftcamping@hotmail.com - maybe the space can be reallocated to someone else.

When you arrive, see the rangers/hosts/liaisons regarding tent and car tags, orientation, food storage, information, etc:

Yeller Pines: Maureen Maguire and Harrison Hood.

Upper Pines: Skip and Erik Wolfe, site 55.

Camp 4: Ranger at booth, or FaceLift volunteer (site 36) after 4:30 PM.

Porcupine Flat: Ranger at booth.

(Please try to drive as little as possible while at the FaceLift, and carpool when you can. A bicycle is very handy, as are the shuttle busses, and walking.)

All the usual laws and regulations apply during the FaceLift, so please behave!

Needed Paraphernalia

 Camping equipment.
Stuff for cooking and eating while camping.
Clothes and toiletries (shower passes will likely be available).
Clothing and footwear for vigorous outdoor work, including sturdy shoes, gloves, sunwear, sun screen, daypack, water bottle, etc.
 Rainwear.
Stuff for the potluck/meatfest on the 28th (see below).

Evening Events Schedule

Tuesday (24th): Reel Rock 2013.

Wednesday (25th): Assault on El Cap, Mark Hudon.

Thursday (26th): Jason Torlano, Pamela Shanti Pack, Doug Robinson.

Friday (27th): Bud Keene, Mayan Smith-Gobat, Tommy Caldwell.

Saturday (28th): Outdoor live music at the elementary school (west of the Visitor Centre), with music by Graham Smith-White, followed by Little Brother. 6:00 - 9:00 PM.

Sunday (29th): Dinner followed by a raffle and dancing to Little Brother.

All evening events except on Saturday are at the East Auditorium, behind the Visitor Centre. Doors open at 6:30, except on Saturday and Sunday nights, which start at 6:00. Events free to FaceLifters, although donations welcome. Beer and wine available, but must be purchased - details TBA.

Volunteer Projects

A main FaceLift activity is picking up garbage (aka litter, trash, skatt) wherever it can be found in the park. Simply come to the Visitor Centre in the morning, and you can sign in and get litter sticks, bags, gloves, freebies, information about all sorts of stuff, directions, and work mates.

There may be special projects - removing major (post-development) garbage deposits, trail work, habitat restoration. Details TBA.

Whatever you do, please sign in every morning, and be back by 4:00 PM for weigh-in and draw prizes (3:00 PM on Sunday). And be careful while you're out there!

Donations

The YCA can use donations, to help it pay for everything that's needed to make the FaceLift happen. Potluck/FoodFest (Saturday - 28th)

This will be at Yellow Pines, starting at 5:00 and going until it's time to go to bed. Food, drink, music, bongo-drumming, fire, friends, fun. Some people should come back to YP in the afternoon, to pick up the BBQ (hitch needed), fill it, and get it started, plus get things organized.

See also http://www.supertopo.com/climbers-forum/2128112/Yosemite-Facelift-Feast-2013

If you arrive for the potluck by 6:00 PM or so, you not only get to try all sorts of wonderful food, it's still light for meeting everyone.

Please bring:

Whatever you'd like to BBQ, eat, and drink.
 Plate and utensils!
Stuff for others to eat, if feasible.
 Musical instrument and ability.
 Headlight or lantern.
A donation to the YCA - all will be asked to chip in.

If people are interested, we could have a bit of a swap meet. Climbing-related gear and books, price and name of donor marked thereon, all proceeds to YCA, unsold stuff back to donors.

Other special events may include:

Creative uses of the orange-u-tong (jstan).
 Egg-throwing contest (khanom).
 Yodelling (various).
Diet challenge (already won by plaidman).
 Slacklining (MH in secret training).
Wheel barrow race (plaidman to bring, and demonstrate on slackline).

10th Annual Yosemite Facelift 2013

Yosemite Climbing Association (YCA)

Thank you for volunteering at Yosemite Facelift 2013! Whether this is your 1st Facelift or your 3rd, 4th or 10th we are very happy that you are joining us.

Volunteer Check-In

Please see attached [above] flyer for check-in time and locations.

Feel free to use the park shuttles to get around.

Return to the check-in station with your trash any time before 3:00 PM (so it can be weighed and sorted.

Waiting for the raffle at 5:00 at the Visitor Center is a fun time to hang out with other volunteers. You have to be present to win, except those staying at Porcupine Flats. The raffle tickets of those staying at PF will be delivered to the Valley check-in each day, and do not need to be present to win.

It may be too late now to get a site in the Valley, but you never know. There could be cancellations, plus perhaps there's room at Porcupine Flat.

The illustrious FatTrad informs me that: "Just confirming with you that I will be bringing dogs/burgers for 15 people, ketchup/mustard, bbq utensils. THE BIG NEWS……. Sharing tent site (in Yeller Pines) with Dr. F, Craig Fry. And The Shermans."

I suggest that anyone camping within 100 m bring earplugs. Could be lively.

Edit: 100 m = 100 metres. Sorry. A site featuring Jeff, Bill, Anastasia, Aristides, Craig, and maybe Matthew could be fairly loud.

Due to the rim fire and doubts about whether the facelift was happening, I procrastinated making airplane reservations, which priced me right out of the market.

FACELIFT CAMPING - CHANGES AND UPDATES

With regard to FaceLift camping, we're working on a system whereby the camp hosts in Yellow Pines, Upper Pines and Camp 4 (and NPS staff as needed) get updates every day or two. That way if campers' plans change, we know what's happening, and can reallocate spaces.

If your camping plans change before or during the FaceLift, please:

1. If you're already in Yosemite, let your camp host know.

2. If you're not in Yosemite, send an e-mail directly to yosemitefaceliftcamping@hotmail.com Please provide details - name(s), which campground, what the change is, etc.

If you're uncertain, be prudent, bearing in mind that if you don't need the space, others probably do. Thanks!

I believe that if you don't show up as scheduled, and don't let anyone know what you're doing, you get one night grace, and then your space is reallocated.

Harrison: plans are for the BBQ etc on Saturday night at Yellow Pines, as always: http://www.supertopo.com/climbers-forum/2128112/Yosemite-Facelift-Feast-2013

Special thanks to Sharon for organizing all the camping requests! It works out to about 1,000 camper-nights.

This is great. My dad had that stove. He was a "think about doing it" kind of a guy rather than a "just do it" guy. So it never got used. Probably still in a storage unit somewhere.

Still I loved toying with that stove as a kid and dreaming of using it to cook while resting in my sleeping bag a la Colin Fletcher. That image is no longer possible in many places.

Stoves are probably the reason most people got into hiking in the first place. My best hike however involved no stove. Eleven straight days eating hummis. Not a problem for me. I have had oatmeal for breakfast for the last seventy years. Hummis was Cathy's idea but now she can't bear to look at the stuff.

My last breakfast will be oatmeal. Probably indicates low order function in one of the human characteristics.

Fletcher sez, This is great. My dad had that stove. He was a "think about doing it" kind of a guy rather than a "just do it" guy. So it never got used.

I never used mine, either, but it didn't lay in storage. It tried to self-immolate in the BC woods. We never got it to work.

You know the two word drill as well as I.

It happened in Canada, naturally, but I bought the unit in Berkeley.
It was near Chilliwack we had the gas attack...in seventy it was.
It was white. It burned vivid blue-ish until I could extinguish.

We ended up uber prepared having just been at Mammoth Mountaineering the day before and taking advantage of their winter sale...here's my morning face all bundled up in a brand new HUGE puffy jacket sitting inside our "screen house" which held up surprisingly well during the overnight storm. Sibylle... I really enjoyed and appreciated your talk last night. Thanks for jumping in and going with the flow [somewhat obscure reference to Doug Robinson talk that followed]. And now I know the story behind your forum image!
Thanks; I'm glad you enjoyed my slide show. I'm not sure if we've met - I don't know people's 'Supertopo' names.

Hi Sibylle: No we've not met, but maybe some day. Just an appreciative guy!

Cheers,
