Given the amount of snow up there, and the weather the next week or two, it looks like the opening all the way thru won't be until the end of May.

This is the way it is just about every year. Why is it going to be any different this year, especially with greater snowfall than last year? There's always busting through the avalanched below Olmsted Point and that's always as slow as molasses in January. When the TM Store and Grill and the Campgrounds are open, then there's a real incentive to open US 120 all the way through. Before that, why?

Something tells me some of you didn't take the time to read the link I posted. . . . here's the text. . . go to the link if you want to see the pretty pictures, too.

Highway 120 will OPEN to 9,945′ Tioga Pass in Yosemite, CA from the east only this Friday, April 29th at noon.

This is huge news for backcountry skiers as Tioga Pass being open allows easy access to some of the best skiing in California/The Lower 48.

Hopefully the coming storm this week doesn’t push things back. But, maybe the storms will make it a powder day on Friday…

Get some!

“Anticipated opening of California State Route 120 West to the east Yosemite National Park Entrance Gate is scheduled for Friday, April 29th at noon.

Mono County – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has been working on clearing snow, removing rocks, and repairing the road to open State Route 120 West to the east Yosemite Park entrance gate. It is anticipated that the road will reopen from winter closure on Friday, April 29th, 2016 at noon, weather and safety permitting. Caltrans’ number one priority is safety for the traveling public and highway maintenance crews. State Route 120 west will remain closed at the Yosemite Park entrance.

This partial opening is dependent upon favorable weather and verification that the highway is safe for users. If the area is impacted by inclement weather Caltrans may not be able to open the highway as anticipated. Please check local highway conditions before planning to use SR 120 west.

For the latest highway information please visit the Caltrans QuickMap site at quickmap.dot.ca.gov or call the Road Condition Hotline at 1-800-427-ROAD (7623).” – Caltrans, today

In the early 80's when the Lee Vining locals were jonesing to get the pass open a plan to spread manure on the snow to speed up melting was proposed...I'm not sure if this ever happened..? I also heard rumors of local shoveling parties attacking the snow pack on this side of the pass..?

I wonder how long it would take a team strong backs to cut a mile long section, wide enough for an atv to get thru, to go skiing?
