From the amount of snow, or actually lack of snow, the pass should have been open a while ago. Olmstead was bare, bone dry, nothing. What gives ?

Just got home from Young Lakes/Conness. Interesting conditions.

Below 8600 ft, there's very little snow. Plowing didn't take much work. TM Campground is pretty dry. About as snow-free as I've ever seen it on opening day.

Go up another 500-1000 feet and conditions change pretty quickly. Up high, this is as much snow as I've ever seen on opening day, going back 5 odd years.

It's shaping up into a nice bed of Sierra cement but I'm glad I brought my snowshoes.

Here is hoping that some people will post pictures. I may not be able to get up there for a few weeks.

QITNL so that was your snow shoe track coming down from ragged peak? When did you go Friday? I went up Saturday to Young lakes to attempt Conness but like you said the conditions were tough and made it hard to find the trail. A lot more snow than I thought and I was glad to have snow shoes. Nice pictures.

QITNL, I have limited room in my van to bring what I will use for the next 4 months. Should I bring my snowshoes and gaiters? Thanks for all you info, Dude. :D Cheers, L.

Sean, yeah, that might have been my track. I headed up Saturday as well. I ditched the trail at Dingley Creek and went over the pass; at the bottom of the col, hung a right to upper Young Lake. Crossed a few random tracks over the next couple of days, some might have been yours. I hope too many folks don't follow mine! But they will be gone in a flash.

I didn't tag the summit of Conness, though I could have thrown a rock at it. My boot prints end right here, the next 10 feet was pretty sketch. A couple thousand feet down on either side and no room to self-arrest.

Call me a wimp if you want but that is my Happy Mother's Day! shot. I gotta rig up some kinda lightweight self-belay kit.

Lynne, I'd bring gaiters, they are small & I'm a gaiter kinda guy, I hate getting snow and crap in my boots. Snowshoes you might not need after the next couple of weeks; the snow that's left should be nicely compacted.

I love it up there this time of year, a little window where it's an alpine environment. No crowds and no skeeters and snow makes for pleasant travel if you are into it.

QITNL,
Once we made it to young lake we looked at Conness and thought it might be scary with the snow right near the summit. It seems like both of us made a good decision to not go to the top. I hope no one follows our path because we lost the trail several times when you break out of the trees. Such a nice weekend up there. Thanks for the pictures.

QITNL, Thanks for the beta. :D Today was last day at work. Tomorrow errands and goodbyes and then pack and I'm off to Adventure Land. So much more prepared this year. Jazzed to be hitting the water, rock and trails. lynne

What gives ?

"Depends. Who did you vote for in 2004 and 2008?"

Really ?? I'm the guy who works and pays taxes, lots of them. I'm not sucking it up in my van behind the Mobil 4 months and the 8 lounging in the desert claiming to minimize my carbon footprint. Bums don't pay taxes.

rwedgee, I have paid mega taxes in my life. Then ran into the Perfect Storm of Life and was pulled into a quiet harbor to rethink it all.

I saw life one way when I was a workaholic pulling down the bucks. The Perfect Storm put me a place to think, ponder and reconsider.

Bottom line to me: Don't judge. Live how you choose but don't judge those that don't make your same life decisions.

And khanom, all of us think differently. You don't know who he voted for. And frankly, no matter who you vote for (there could be some exceptions we don't know about)they aren't going to carry out the platform(s) you voted them in for. This applies to pretty much all parties. Just my observations.

I'll probably be sorry I posted such a dogmatic one. Every once in a while I get a "wild hair". :D

Edit: But you are both (hopefully) my SuperTopo Friends.

Yes, more pictures, please : D

I could use some distractions and the images of the High Country would be pretty good ones.

Yes more pics please! Am heading up there Friday. So excited. Never miss an opening weekend but it was Mother's Day so I'm coming up there now.

And no one rag on Lynne. She's living the friggin dream. Working in Tuolumne 4 months a year then working at a climbing shop down south the next 8 months. She's got life dialed as far as I'm concerned. And one hell of an awesome lady who I'm so stoked to see this weekend.

The meadow is fairly dry, not the usual swamp/lake. Tenaya is dry at the base, still holds a fair amount of snow up high. There's a big snow drift at the base of Pywiack and some on top. It will be a few more weeks for most north-facing routes to dry up. If you're headed up to the high country, expect some postholing and wading across creeks.

Here are some more shots, there are more here
http://www.qitnl.com/v/051113/
and more to come when I work through what I got.

Seems kinda pointless but I'm glad a few of you are interested in this stuff.
