If Beltway Insiders' talk of the sequester has made your eyes glaze over so far, here's something that may make you open those eyes wide: This postponed and renamed Son of The Fiscal Cliff, which goes into effect March 1 if no action is taken to prevent it, may mean at least $7 million in cuts to California's National Parks, Monuments, Recreation Areas, and Historic Sites. That could mean no seasonal ranger hires, closed campgrounds, and limited visitor center hours.

It could also mean you have to drive a few extra hours to get to the other side of the Sierra Nevada until the snow melts: the cuts would mean no budget for Yosemite National Park to plow Route 120 over Tioga Pass.

Things are tough all over.....no need to get extra pissed just because the proximity of the problem now creeps into NP's and might affect tuolumne. There are gads of non-nat'l park based places to climb.

The Tioga pass road is never ever closed.

It's open year round always.

Sometimes though it's only impassable to a motor vehicle .......

Seriously, anger accomplishes nothing that will make your dilemma better.

Look on the positive side, you might have the meadows to yourself when you skin in.

Or, you might be forced to find some cool new sh#t you've never seen on the eastside.

Bitching gets you nowhere. Seeing the positive in a situation gets you everywhere.

Unfortunately it's unconstitutional for congress to have it's pay reduced, at least in the current term.

Yes ... skitch has it right.

One can not eliminate anger.

If one tries, .... one becomes sterile ......

Oh shush with that constitution stuff. Everyone here knows that.. Americans are born with an innate knowledge and complete perfect understanding of the constitution and all the founders intentions.

One party has declared political war on the executive and will do anything to destroy it.

We all will suffer a bit for it.

suspending members’ pay would blatantly violate the most recent amendment, the 27th Amendment, which ensures that changes to lawmakers’ salaries cannot take effect until a new Congress convenes; the purpose of this is to prevent members from voting themselves a pay raise. (Of course, members can vote future Congresses a pay raise or reduction, knowing that most of them will be reelected.)

Ok, it's political, I'm out.

I'm simply saying that with every negative thing, there is a positive aspect. I choose to see the positive.

I always thought that Caltrans cleared that road since it's a State Road. Too bad the state is broke as well. Hopefully a balance is found in the next few years, our country has been living a bit too high on the hog in my very humble opinion.

"I'm simply saying that with every negative thing, there is a positive aspect. I choose to see the positive."

Right on. The positive is that we are sinking into fiscal hell slower. However, we are still borrowing close to .40 cents of every dollar the government is spending, so plan on more of this or your kids will be in debtors prison all their lives....if it's not too late already.

http://www.usdebtclock.org/

Current debt per taxpayer as noted by the US Debt Clock is $147,000 and getting bigger daily. This is a dead end road, and no one knows how far it can be traveled before the true fiscal cliff is driven over. It's not a partisan issue other than the fact that both parties Presidents since Clinton are driving the bus towards the cliff.

maybe if we didn't give away so much money in Corporate welfare, we would have enough money to pay for the things that Gov is supposed to do

Corporations are contributing as much to the fed budget as ever. The problem isn't one of revenue.

The federal deficit is going down by about 400 billion this year, not up.

I wrote this for my Facebook Page on March 1st;

Starting today, all peaks over 13,500' high, in Sierra National Parks, will be sequestered, transferred, and stored in warehouses in Modesto, Fresno, Lone Pine, and Bishop. Below, a Bell Helicopter flying in to sequester Mt Whitney. Due to limited space in the Owens Valley, Mt Whitney will be stored at the Laws Railroad Museum in Bishop.

and you pay for all the cuts on the discretionary side and about half of the cuts on the military side.

Hey, I say we lobby hard to get the national debt laws changed so that they parallel the student debt laws.

Student can't repay loans? Not to worry. The banks will just wait, accruing interest for years...and then garnish the former student's Social Security Check (that's of course AFTER ruining said student's credit score and ability to find gainful employment).

Congress can't do the math to figure out how to pay its bills? The American people can demand that any outstanding debt incurred during the Congressional terms in which a member served be subtracted from the pension, Social Security, health care and other benefits accrued by the member.

Congress passed laws enabling public companies to back out of their promised pension and health care benefits. Why can't the American people demand the same of Congress if they're bankrupting the Nation?

No need to comment on the wildly impractical proposals. Just felt good to get a good rant out.

Let's just kick out the GOP and make it a one party country? Getting rid of the house Republicans is what its all about anyway so in 2014 he can finish changing this country into something only he can Recognize. With less rights more goverment control higher taxes for all and the abolishment of Presidential term limits.
Oh sorry that doesn't happen till 2016. Obama for the King!!

After years of involvement I left the political scene 5 years ago. I pray more often now but put my money and energy into actually fixing things on a personal, one on one level.

If I'm wrong please school me, but I think that the reason they take money from the parks is because they know we all love them so we'll kick in personally to keep them open.

Why oh Why do we allow two groups of politicos to determine our lives and our futures?
