reminds me about some well-known ice climber (wilford?) surviving a similar fall when the pillar hit the deep frozen creek below, providing a cushion of displaced water to break the fall

Holy crap!

I think Alex Lowe had a similar incident at least once.

hope that's not real; he looks 50 vertical feet off the deck at least, which would seem pretty unusual to be that high w/o any screws at all on wi4+. didn't guy lacelle die when the column he was on collapse, or was that someone else?

Allegedly, he survived with minor injuries. ... but on the internet, no one knows you're a dog.

For a free hanging pillar, it is often more safe to not place screws until one has climbed past the point where the pillar connects to rock. The risk is that the pillar will collapse. The fact that he didn't have any pro in may be what saved him as he was not attached to the beast when it fell.

Video should be traceable as the image sports the UIAA watermark. I couldn't find it tho. The GIF could be a hoax. [Click to View YouTube Video]

That's why hooking is sooooo much better if you can. Also 3/8" is bomber. Any deeper and you are burning up your arms unsticking your tools. Looks like that guy was over amping and hacking at the ice.

WOW! I'd share this but I don't want any of my partners seeing this cause it may just freak them out to the point that they won't climb ice any more.
