I've had the opposite experience with uHaul...
uHaul typically means "U breakdown". Pay a little more and go with Penske unless they can guarantee a low mileage truck.

Honestly, as far as an easy drive goes, you couldn't ask for much better then Vegas to Reno. Once you're out of Hawthorne it's more or less a constant straight line with a couple light hills thrown in. You'd probably be fine towing.

A couple of years back, I had to drive a 26' U-Haul from Davis to LA.
I found it basically like driving a car. No problems, at all.
The Grapevine caught my attention, but not really a problem.
I'd do your plan of driving down, flying back, then towing 2nd with the truck, without hesitation.

Just make sure the uhaul has enough clearance so the roof won't scratch up the tunnels.

Just floor the accelerator and make sure you drift all the turns.
Never use the brakes.
Go all out.
You're climber aren't chya?
That's what climbers do ......

When you check prices, you may find that the larger rig costs no more. Having more space is better than finding that you are short, and need another trip! They drive the same, and get about the same mileage.

Why not price it? I helped a friend move using PODs. It was more expensive, but the initial charge covers one month. So you can get it for a number of days on the front end, then have it moved, then have it for a couple of weeks to unload. They delivered it to the first house on the day that they said they would and they delivered it to where my friends was moving to on the day they said they would. Thats the main thing you need to know. They don't offer a time during the day, so thats a pain, but you don't have to drive it and you have a month.
some of that gets offset if you are moving from an apartment to an apartment because its harder to find a spot to leave it. So you may as well use a moving truck. But if its home to a home and you have a place to leave it, then that makes sense to me. Plus if you need to move early and you don't yet have a place to live, but you do have a place to stay, like your parents or friends, then they will store it for you.
that said.. I have driven a 26 foot uhaul from California to Texas and it was easy. Even when I hit that road sign and knocked it down.. LOL..
Edit: just make certain that you understand the size difference.

I think $200 for gas is a little low. I towed a car behind a Uhaul and got about 5 miles per gallon.

Don't forget Ekats advice.
AND. . . when you pick your stuff up, graciously ask the clerk to add a couple FREE DAYS and any FREE MILES they can. . . they'll do it, only if you ask.

I spent five summers selling merchandise for a traveling music group and got to be an expert at touring the country driving a box truck with a trailer. A couple of suggestions:
If you have to stop, only stop at truck stops. There's almost no way of being forced to back up in those places. If you don't need fuel, pull into the truck parking. You can just drive straight in and out of those spots. If the truck is a diesel, check to see if it will fit a fuel nozzle for a semi truck. If not, you will need to fuel up at the auto diesel pump.
It can take a while to adjust to the extra size of the truck. If you are in the right lane and there is no shoulder or, worse yet, there is no shoulder on either side don't panic. Just keep your sight line on the highway line to your left. If you try to drive in the "center of the lane" you will drift to the right and possibly hit something.
If you get in a jam and have to back up get your girlfriend to be your spotter. Have her stand where you can see each other in your driver side mirror to stop you if you are about to jackknife or hit something.
Backing up doesn't have to be scary. Keep your hand at the 6:00 position on the wheel. That way you just move your hand in the direction you want the trailer to turn. Hover your foot over the brake while you back up so you won't accidentally panic and hit the gas. Practice in an empty parking lot first and you'll see it's not too bad. Go slowly. If some jag-off runs over and starts shouting directions at you while you are backing up give him the finger because he's a dick.
Congratulations on the new job!

Don't run any range cattle over...You'll end up having to pay the rancher for his loss...And if you do happen to get caught in area 51 at night , stop and rent a room at the Alien Inn...RJ

Paying for someone to haul your freight vs a truck is about the same price. One just has less headaches and is simpler (that would be the freight option). I've done both.
There are other options out there than just Pods. But I'll let you look into that if you want to. It's pretty easy to find recommendations online.

I've a couple of Area 51 stories but I can't tell one cause the wife might read it and the other is classified...Jess sayin'. I guess that makes both of 'em classified.
