Silver's right. Even if you have planned well financially, the perfect storm can destroy it all.

The community can help keep that from happening. I would be glad to help in whatever way I can. Hope someone establishes the date asap so people can begin to make plans.

Ditto ekat about an address.

Peace, lynne

How many days in the hospital now for John?
This is going to be one expensive bivouac and also ain't going to be any soaking-the-cast-off-early and jumping right-back-up-on-the-pipe type of recovery.

But for our part, we can try real hard and imagine it so:

We are all pulling for you John.

It's my hope that the drama queens and bullies alike can act like gentleman and focus on Largo.

Amen to that, Coz, and thanks for your offer, that's awesome.

I have never had the honor of meeting John, but in my eyes he is a legend (as he is in many.)May you heal up fast!

As a recent recipient of a $50k bill over my last Yosemite adventure, I know well how fast one's life can get turned upside down by an unexpected incident.

I really like the idea of a JT gathering and bonfire stories/fundraiser...would love to see this happen!

Coz, that's a mighty nice offer. If there's an event down by the Tree, I'd make sure the house was rented for at least a couple of nights.

Ho man, Spring in JTree....

Hey Bullwinkle. I've been following the comments about fundraising for Largo, and I wanted to propose an idea- doing something at Outdoor Retailer in January. I don't know how much money needs to be raised, but it sounds like "a lot". Using the Access Fund booth at OR? asking Black diamond to host a slide show during the show? getting companies to chip in $? I haven't spoken to anyone about this, so I'm wondering what you guys think. awaiting instructions!

My first thought would be to get the Outdoor Retailer to comp a booth just for the fundraiser? I doubt we'd have any trouble staffing the booth.
Prime real estate of course. None of this out in the back 40 stuff.

I'm surprised they haven't approached us about it yet! Heh. I mean come on kids: you think the guy had anything to do with popularizing the sport?

(But barring that, yes maybe The Access Fund for some space sounds good).

It's now been almost 24 hours since TC posted the URL (http://johnlongdonations.chipin.com/john-long); for the donations, and although people are posting comments to John, the contribution level has not changed on the site. Its legitimacy has been questioned here, and that's made me hesitant to use it. Things are a little murky.

Can someone say who the initiator of the donation site is, or provide an address where a donation could be sent for John?

This is much more serious then "just" a broken ankle.

I have no idea except what i saw in the pic and a few tidbits..But he does have a severe open tib fib injury and is still in the hospital after about a week. He had emergency surgery and has at least two more surgeries in the future - maybe a fasciotomy, nerve damage, compromised circulation, infection, arterial vascular damage, severe bone damage, tendon rupture or laceration, severe muscle damage, osteomylitis, sepsis, severe swelling, pain....a week in the hosp in LA with multilpe surgeries...easy over 100 000 thousand etc

Thanks for all the support. I'l make it through this.

Any "fund" was done without my knowledge and while no doubt well-intended is not the way to go. Nobody just gives money to a slush pot for people to spend on hot rods and lap dances or whatever.

Such a plan if needed will be way later. But I appreciate the thought.

Great to have friends.

Note that this doesn't refer to any spring fundraiser that may or may not be organized by John's friends. Although the idea of contributing to lap dances for Largo has its attractions...

Being an eastern climber I have talked to John on only a few occasions over the last forty years. That said I can only opine that I would be very surprised were he willing to be a lapee.

Well...I'm still "in" on the moral support angle. I know what it's like to get all busted up in 5 milliseconds. The road to recovery lengthy and arduous. And...it gets worse...the older the bust-upee has become!
