Thats why I was so ticked off about missing last winter. So many lakes easily accessible and with no snow on them.

How thick was that clear ice? Do you know?

The clear ice was just under 2 inches thick.

Regarding last year, it was indeed an anomaly and we got to skate many, many lakes. It was the first season I remember where the ice actually got too old- by the end of January it was well over a foot thick some places more, buckled, cracked and less than ideal.

Also interesting is there really weren't that many lakes that didn't get snowed on early, just a handful in the High Sierra weren't frozen when the November storm came through. The following dry period allowed for that snow to be assimilated and smoothed by the sun and wind (The Zambonie Effect!). While still skatable, they were a rougher white ice, certainly not like smooth ice of Garnet,Tenaya or Lundy.

Fun thread! I came home for my Dads 90th birthday hoping the ponds he had built when we were really young would be frozen so I could skate some. Not to be... He built two ponds for my brothers and me to learn to skate before we were allowed on the larger lakes and the boys off to learn hockey. Three generations have learned to skate on those ponds and numerous neighbor kids. For the great grand kids and newest crop of neighbors he has added heat in the little pagoda and LIGHTS for evening skating......DAD.....we had to tuff it out!

I only skate infrequently since moving to Ca but this thread has got me motivated again!
