Well, that was cool until it 'froze' up. Man, a Zamboni doesn't make ice
that nice! Loved the soundtrack, too. That musta been Lamarck Col he went over?
I seriously want to do this in the next couple of winters, ski, hike & skate the JMT. That's about how long it'll take me to accumulate some new lighter weight gear.
Has anyone ever hiked any distance in NNNBC boots? Mine fit me really well. I think I'll check it out this weekend.
Thanks Dit, LOVE the video. Was wondering if you guys had gone swimming. Figured there would be a change of clothes on hand.
Has anyone ever hiked any distance in NNNBC boots?
Sista. . . I can just picture you, RIGHT NOW, doing this. . . I think those boots would be cool - but carry a SERIOUS foot repair kit and know how to use it.
I guess you're considering those boots since they'd fit those cool Nordic blades?
AND. . . consider a drag bag set up for crossing the lakes. . . that dad in Dit's vid is a really STRONG skater. . . so don't take his casual wearing of a pack too seriously. . . a drag bag set up would be far more NORMAL!
I'm wondering, how did they film the skater? Another skater, but where's the bobbing--the subject stays right in the middle of the frame and there's no motion on the camera!
k-Man. . . that's DIT. . . pro, all the way! And. . . I may add, even though he's been a photog for decades, he's pretty new to this video thing. . . methinks he catches on pretty frikken fast!
:-)
AND. . . DIT. . . when you want to link a vid, click that VIDEO tab at the top on a new post . . . then paste your URL (not an embedded one) into that slot - then go up and select everything from the = sign left - INCLUDING the = and delete it. . . then you're good to go!
I know . . . you have to click 'em both to make them work. . . but something tells me, the ones that are actually PHOTOS of the video get clicked more often.
I could be full of it, too! (Although I never have been, before!)
man....
watching Steve White skating at speed across that perfectly clear ice gives me the WILLIES...
Spectacularly beautiful but I'll be danged if I'd ever try it.
Ice ain't supposed to be both solid and that crystal clear.
Wonder if they saw any fish?
We all (including DIT) used to hoof it up to Lake Mary before Tamarack had enough snow to open and we'd skate that PERFECT lake. . . a mile by a half mile. . . crystal clear ice. . . somebody in the pack would go way wide and lure a school of trout and skate toward us with the school following along. . . you wanna talk TRIPPY? Ice skating at 9,100 feet, with the Sierra Crest looming above you. . . silently floating over a school of trout.
Haven't used the boot skates since I left Calgary.
Alignment wasn't critical as we were skating on a frozen creek, which was not flat, so we were not going very fast. But it sure beat walking, especially carrying a pack with a shitload of ice gear. We took hockey sticks to help our balance.
You can't link an embedded video. . . so. . . go to YouTube
select the TITLE of your video
Copy and paste it into YouTube's search engine
Search for it
click into your video
select that new URL
copy it
Then come to TheTaco
open a new post
click the VIDEO tab at the top of the blank post
paste the UN-EMBEDDED URL in the slot
put your insertion point just to the right of the EQUAL SIGN
Select everything INCLUDING THE EQUAL SIGN to the left
hit delete
Hit SUBMIT
You'll see that your insertion point is inside that link. . . DO NOT DO ANYTHING ELSE TO THAT LINK UNTIL YOU GET YOUR INSERTION POINT OUTTA THERE. . . then you're good to go for adding a comment or something.
NO. . . if you do that, you can actually read the word EMBEDDED in the URL. . . that's what trips you up when you try to embed it here. . .you have to get an un-embedded URL to make it work.
There are probably a number of other ways to get the right result, but this is the only one I was able to figure out on my own. . . and it took a while. . . cause I ain't too good at this stuff.
:-)
By the way. . . taking a hockey stick along for stability is really cool. . . so is taking ski skating poles - that is, if you want to go really, really fast!
I get this url
http//www.youtube.com/watch?v=26EeBKVnWLE&feature=player_embedded
then I cut out the 26EeBKVnWLE and paste it in the supertopo dialog
easy peasy
I guess the real question is how do you eliminate the camera shake when follow camming someone. It's hard to do sliding on snow so skating must be near impossible!!!
Kath; If I could time it right, I could ski a lot, if not most of the trail, and still have ice to skate across the lakes; but yeah, I was thinking some kind of cover for the toe bail.
Probably better idea to do it about now and slog through some snow like they did.
I better get on skates this winter, it's been since I was 18! Eons ago.
So by drag bag, you mean a rig to tow my pack across the ice behind me? Sounds like a good idea.
I'm getting all kinds of crazy ideas now!
I sure like the look of those NNNBC skate blades. I got a killer new set of skis, and the boots fit me really well. AHHHHHhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!
With rare exception, if there is enough snow to ski along the JMT, there is too much snow to skate. Most lakes along the JMT will be frozen by late November, bigger ones maybe early December. Snow that falls after then pretty much puts an end to skating.

Thats why I was so ticked off about missing last winter. So many lakes easily accessible and with no snow on them.

How thick was that clear ice? Do you know?
The clear ice was just under 2 inches thick.
Regarding last year, it was indeed an anomaly and we got to skate many, many lakes. It was the first season I remember where the ice actually got too old- by the end of January it was well over a foot thick some places more, buckled, cracked and less than ideal.
Also interesting is there really weren't that many lakes that didn't get snowed on early, just a handful in the High Sierra weren't frozen when the November storm came through. The following dry period allowed for that snow to be assimilated and smoothed by the sun and wind (The Zambonie Effect!). While still skatable, they were a rougher white ice, certainly not like smooth ice of Garnet,Tenaya or Lundy.
yeah, Dit. . . TFPU, for sure. . . you really do belong here. . . this place isn't all about ROCK CLIMBING. . . we LOVE new, happy, fun, BITCHEN PEOPLE. . . your vids are fantastic!
Fun thread! I came home for my Dads 90th birthday hoping the ponds he had built when we were really young would be frozen so I could skate some. Not to be... He built two ponds for my brothers and me to learn to skate before we were allowed on the larger lakes and the boys off to learn hockey. Three generations have learned to skate on those ponds and numerous neighbor kids. For the great grand kids and newest crop of neighbors he has added heat in the little pagoda and LIGHTS for evening skating......DAD.....we had to tuff it out!
I only skate infrequently since moving to Ca but this thread has got me motivated again!
Pond my Dad built when were weeeeeee little to learn to ice skate.
