Firstly, TFish, glad you got your gear back, even at a price of some sort. Did you do the right thing? The wrong thing? Should you have told the cops?
It wasn't even that bad of a price. Who else can say they bought a huge rack for $43. I don't even care I lost my #5, it cost me like $2.
I think I did the right thing. The guy knew where we were camping and if I ratted him out he could have come looking for me. Or I might have spent a few hours the next day talking to cops and filing a report instead of climbing some really fun stuff.

Rare is the situation where a cop makes things better and even then often too late.
Cops help people all the time--it just does not make the news most of the time. Ever been stranded on the side of the road and had a cop stop and help out? Ever watch YOSAR rescue someone of the Captain? (YOSAR is run by cops.)

Yeah most SAR groups are under the authority of LEO's .. but they are not generally the ones doing the work. RESCUE is not normally the day to day job of the average LEO. I did not say that the popo is NEVER a good thing.. just RARELY.
The fact remains that the greatest threat to my life and all i care about in it has been LEO's. Just a fact and one many others can relate to.
Coming from a mountaineer that should say something.

LEOs are like the Immune system of our society. If you are threatened with real sickness, you need them. Sometimes they win, and sometimes you get sick anyway.
But in situations where there's not much crime, they become like an auto-immune disease like Arthritis, Hashimoto's, or even aids. They attack the people who they are supposed to protect because their main function is to protect by attacking without the best discrimination of what to attack. When it's your job to bust crime, your idea of sucess in your job in our society that emphasizes competition, is to find something to bust.
Thus our prohibition style drug war as turned regular citizens into criminals and LEOs into the enemy. Really sad for both the LEOs and the people as otherwise they could be white knights for all

Joshua Tree has the look and feel of a small town. After living here for many years I've noticed that peoples impression seems to be on par with the town of Mayberry.
The real truth however is in stark contrast. The Morongo Basin as a whole is a welfare state. We also have some very big city problems with regards to drugs and theft.
I know because my wife and I had our entire house cleaned out by meth addicts while we were in L.A. so she could get chemo.
Visitors (like the OP) let their guard down and do foolish things like leaving belongings either very visible in their cars, or just outright in the open. Then act surprised by the results.
Law enforcement has their hands full here. The night this apparently happened there was indeed a shooting in Yucca Valley. One person is in the hospital in critical condition.
Joshua Tree is actually a very large area geographically. This means it is a very big area to cover.
Just some perspective to clear some of the outright bullshit that has been posted to this thread.

Indirectly related to this - a couple months ago I had an expensive mountain bike stolen from the basement of the office building where I work in downtown San Francisco. The thief managed to get into the bike lockup even though it was key coded. He was recorded on security video cam cutting the lock off and leaving with my bike. I burned the video to CD, printed a couple frame grabs of the thief and dropped it all off with SFPD. I expected to never hear back, but to my surprise got a call a week later from a police inspector saying he was distributing the video for officers to view. Shortly after that I got another call saying 3 officers had recognized the thief, who is a known burgler and meth user, and that the DA was issuing a no bail arrest warrant. I called SFPD today to find out what was happening with the case. They told me the guy was arrested 6 days ago and arraigned this afternoon on charges of grand theft for stealing my bike. He's also facing charges of violating parole.
Unfortunately, there's little chance of getting my bike back, but its assuring to know this guy is doing time as I type and not getting away with it. Quite impressive followup by SFPD. I'll be seeing this crook in court.

I ain't against ass kickings - in fact I am very pro ass kicking.
Just do the ass kicking on folks who deserve an ass kicking.
Not innocent citizens.
Problem is, that is in the eye of the beholder.
I seriously doubt that there are many people in bad parts of their lives that are made better by getting beaten. for example:
Having grown up pretty poor as I did, you don't completely trust the police. I was raised to be polite, answer the questions, and move on. But when you've been unfairly tooled a couple of times, you see "that crap" has something to it, and that the police aren't an unbiased mirror merely reflecting back our own bad attitudes.

Cops in Joshua Tree are LAME.... I was heading out of the park years ago... stoped at Sams market for some junk food,....... backed my car up 8 feet and THEN turned on my headlights instead of turning the lights on before backing.... (note, this is all in a parking lot) they pulled me over and never asked for any iD... The yanked my car door open and with hands on thier pistol yelled GET OUT OF THE CAR! and asked if i was DRUNK... the last beer i drank was about 20 years ago...... I called their watch commander and told him that his men are THUGS WITH NEPOLIAN COMPLEX.
WHAT A BUNCH OF TAX WASTING DNUT EATING LOOSERS.... really what a bunch of sh#t.
PS glad you got your gear back and lets set up a sting opporation and catch those meth heads in the act

Bachar thought he was black. He disliked the police yet... He liked the officers that saved his home in Mammoth from burning down. He liked the officer that steadied his neck when they got him out of his wrecked car.

Maybe you should have offered them the ice cream first.
I've been suggesting a sting for years, but you people who naively leave out tempting rewards for theives are also part of the problem, but unfortunately it doesn't work the same as "a fed bear is a dead bear".
