The American Alpine Club wants to charge me (50ys old) $25.00 more for a membership than a 28yr old adult. WTF?

Sure it's a tough job market, but something is bound to show up after half a century? Maybe that only seems funny to me because I'm gratefully employed, but I'll let it stand.

But it is weird, what happens when you retire and you're on a fixed income... do they bring the rates back down again?

66 is a senior membership but as far as I am concerned they can f*#king pound sand for jabbing me (50ys old) $25.00 more than a 28 yr old adult!

If I might I'd like to recommend the American Physical Society. Before retirement I contributed $90 a year. After retirement I remain a member and get Physics Today, an excellent magazine, every month all for free. This month has a great article on what the gamma ray telescope is contributing to current day cosmological studies.

I would hypothesize, based on age involvement here on El Taco Grande, that it is an administrative fee of sorts. Let me explain.

It would seem the older you get, the more inclined you are to start writing letters to your local government about how the trash man is making too much noise when collecting garbage. You're more likely to write your congressman about change you didn't ask for and don't want. More willing to yell at the neighbor kids to "get off your lawn." And certainly more time to come up with a reason to write in to your non-profits that you are a part of and complain to them too.

28 year-old's are stoked that they got a sticker with their membership and are generally low maintenance because they are too busy climbing stuff to sit around and complain.

I would suggest writing them a letter telling them how neither the Elks Club, the Rotary, or AARP charges more or less based on age, and see how they respond.

I'm joking around.

No really, I saw an opportunity for a joke and I couldn't help myself. That seems lame to me and I wonder what they are thinking. Please don't respond in anger, just clown'n around.

Kids under 12 always get a discount and folks over 65 get a discount. That is pretty darn normal. giveing an adult between the ages of 18 and 28 a better deal than an adult 29 to 65 is complete total f*#king bullshit!

The AAC 28 and younger dues are $40. The 29 to 65 dues are $75. Are you getting a kickback?

Do the math before the rant. It's worse than you think. :)

A). Most 50 year olds have more disposable income then most 28 year olds.
b). THE AAC wants a younger demographic.

Both A and B are true. So ranting is dependent on your "glass 1/2 full v. glass 1/2 empty" take. Those that want to bitch can always find something to bitch about.

I'm 63 and have been paying full fare to the AAC since I was younger then 28 - don't believe I got a discount when I first joined either.

Still fcking bullsh#t. For every 50yr old that has a big retirement account there is annother liveing paycheck to paycheck while some lame ass 25yr old kid is still mooching off of their parents. Completly f*#king stupid idea. Split the difference and charge everyone under 65 the same price and I bet you end up with more members and more revenue.

Most 50 year olds have more disposable income then most 28 year olds.

Well, if they'd majored in something relevant to employment and then
actually worked they would be able to be treated like grownups and pay
their bills. Don't get me started. Oh, I guess I alread did. Sorry.

I could see giving a student discount, if it were legit, but 28? That's
professional student age.

I met two girls backpacking this summer and one majored in "folklore and mythology" while the other majored in "human evolution." Talk about marketable! I asked what they could do with their degrees and they both said "anything."

Sorry, thread drift.

has tradman lost it, or am I blind?

I only see a $10 difference.

Still age discrimination, but the reverse is often true, those under 65, many still paycheck to paycheck, would have to pay more than seniors.

If this is something to pursue... email the club

If this is just a rant, carry on...

After years of eyeing the age 60 movie discount I noticed they moved it up to 65 as I was approaching that golden demarc - that got me grousing on the assumption they'll move it to 70 just as I hit 65. Then I went to see Skyfall last night and the girl gives me a senior ticket and change before I realized what was happening. Now I'm pissed that she would eyeball me as a senior before my time. Am I being unreasonable or just old?

Perhaps Donini will chime in on this; being a past AAC president.

Seriously--the AAC is making a big effort to recruit members; which they have been very successful at-so far.

I was a member for a few years way back in my youth; when you had to apply, and have a resume. I stopped paying, primarily because the club back then didn't really offer any benefits.

The club has changed dramatically in the last few years. I re-joined just last year, when I visited the Teton climbers ranch.

I just came back from the AAC Yosemite climbers meet. I had a blast and met climbers from all over the world. They picked you up at the airport; all the meals were catered, and yes-there was FREE beer.

One of my climbing partners was just awarded a climbing grant for next summer. The club is changing.

I was a member and donor for years.

They showed no appreciation and crapped on me.

I recommend not joining and, if you already have, quitting.

Been climbing for 30 yrs now and thought I would join. it just kind of ticked me off that the cost is so much higher for an old half cripple than it is for a strong young adult.

While we're at it, let's protest ladies night at the local pub.

In all seriousness, the lower cost worked for me. I never made over 25k until I was 29 years old. I've been an AAC member since I was 22, and I never would have joined w/o the reduced rate.

It's basically an attempt to balance out a membership that is skewed older. They are trying to defeat the image of the AAC as bunch of past-it fuddy-duddies who sit around drinking and yakking about the Golden Years.
An image that is at least partly true and goes back to the British equivalent, the Alpine Club.
