Last night at Caltech was the 80th anniversary party for the RCS/SCMA. It was a good turnout.

The highlight for me was seeing Jerry Gallwas, Royal Robbins and Mike Sherrick front and center answering questions and bantering with other old timers like Frank Hoover, John Wedburg and Barbara Lilley. Unfortunately, Glen Dawson wasn't feeling up to it.

I saw Robbins present a slide show at a Sierra Club banquet just a couple of years ago, and was shocked to see his condition last night. He's not walking very well, and while he still has his wit and memory he does not seem well. He was the main attraction and spoke of his time with the RCS and some of his early ascents at Tahquitz and Yosemite.

Jerry Galwas joined him at the dais and prompted some stories from him during the question and answer session. There's a lot of respect, and fondness, between those two. Galwas spoke of how some of the RCS old timers considered Royal dangerous. Yet he said the opposite was true, and that when Royal started up a pitch you knew it would go.

It was good to see that the kids at the Caltech Alpine Club not only know who these guys are, but know and admire what they have done.

With all the technology at Caltech I'm wondering if the event got recorded.

What a memorable night that must have been, Gary. I kinda miss Pasadena sometimes. Wow, just eighty years ago one may have seen this guy hanging out at Caltech's Athenaeum.

Very cool to see these guys last night. Although I bristle at the phrase" old time" RCSer's.Perhaps I refuse to recognize my my own years. However, Robbins and his "crew" were the mentors, those who absolutely paved the road for those climbers of my generation. If we have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants.

Hey, Tony, that'll be you up there representing the creaky old timers someday! Like, maybe next year? :-)

MJ and I got a kick out of Frank Hoover, he's quite a card. Confined to a wheelchair now, he's still sharp. Here's a photo from the Angeles Chapter website of other times with Frank Hoover and Don Wilson on Toe Jam, 60-something years ago.

The number of people who hang on the Topo with roots to Pasadena is pretty amazing. I grew up next to Eaton Canyon. Great fun

I'm glad I made the "rush hour" drive from Orange county. RR and crew were quite entertaining. I bought one of his books and got a couple pages in before I hit the sack.

I really enjoyed the evening. Oh, and Gary, that Tony guy is a young buck compared to some of us :-)

zbrown, the event was recorded by the Caltech Alpine Club.

It was a pleasure for us at the Caltech Alpine Club to host this event. We do a lot of slideshows through the year, as well as the Reel Rock and Banff film festivals, and occasional gear-swaps,"boot-parties" etc Earlier this year we hosted Kyle Dempster, SP Parker, Jed Brown, Mike Libecki, Doug Shepherd, Dylan Johnson, to name a few.

Almost all our events are free of cost, and have free beer and snacks too. You can check our website for more details on what is coming up next!

The SCMA anniversary event was recorded, the cameraman Steve Grossman actually flew out to LA for this purpose. We will try to upload it on our website.

It was definitely a thrill for all of us at the club to get to witness this! We're really happy the SCMA let us join their party. It was great for me, someone who's only gotten interested in climbing in the last few years, to see how it's brought joy and friendship to people for decades.
