I just talked to Lynne Leichtfuss, and we were thinking about putting together a little Climbing meetup at Big Rock, Perris Lake on
the 17th or 18th of November.
I get out of my sling around the 15th and I'm up to do a bit of easy slab climbing and BR would be a perfect place.
If anyone is interested in meeting us there,
give me a call at,
760-780-8433
Lynne and I are trying to get Ron Gomez and maybe Neversummer who lives near there, but any STer is WELCOME!!!
Cosmic and others,
I'd love to join you, but I'm way up here and your way down there, well you know.
Here are some BITD (swami belt and hip belay) pics I found, have fun out there!!!
Tad
Damn. Haven't been there in 25 years or so. Brings back fond memories.
Is it still as spoogie as it was then? If memory serves that place was so greasy. The trough was so greasy the .9s and.10s were easier, or at least more secure.
OMG, so many friends coming. What great fun we will have.
Just got home from crazy day at work. Yo all made my day. Talked to Cosmic and it's the 18th for sure. Mr. G Davis hopefully will create the work schedule to let lynnie OFF on the 18th.
Can't call in sic cause my boss man is coming to climb :D
Out of Towners are welcome to stay here at the Casa that weekend. Just let me know right away so I can make arrangements here. You'll have to camp out...we have an avocado grove and 2 1/2 acres....it will be fun.
COZMEEEEEEKKKKK!!!!!!!! Gaddddam it this sounds like a fabboo time. No chance of us bein' thar......tho'........MAY YOU ALL HAVE PUFFS A GO-GO and LOTSO CLIMBING under SUNNY SKIES !!!!
I'm going to try to make it and bring the family. Looks like lots of fun!
BTW, last time I was there I noticed some of the bolts were not up to modern standards. In particular, the second bolt on the 10a to the right of Africa Flake (don't remember the name of the climb - Mind Bender?) I suspect this bolt sees a lot of falls/hangs, and a failure would not be pretty.
Would it be reasonable to suggest that some of the older bolts be replaced? I don't have the skills, but can donate money to buy the new bolts.
I'm jazzed you and your wife are coming! I'm cleaning my van and kayaks today, but will try to go on line and check facilities. Cheers and Love, lynne.
I might try and make it. haven't been there in years, but that was my lead training ground.
as for the trough, let's just say that water and grease don't mix. . . . . .
Here's one from Peabody's WABAC machine. Before the dam, teenagers having fun after climbing the Trough ca.1965. Hey, are those Busch Bavarian beers? "Taco" insisted on climbing in cowboy boots.
Have fun everyone, I'll make it back there one of these days. Congrats on getting married, Jeff and Cynthia!
I'd look at the thing from the ground and the dishes made it look like a romp. Then I got on it and thought "holy crap, this is spoogie". Talk about slick!
I soloed The Roof but backed off the Trough every time I tried to solo it.
Back then the harder climbs were more secure, but you did not want to fall; quite a few of the boltz required using a stopper due to lost hangers or to reduce leverage on the spinner.
Parking outside the gate for free isnt to advisable at the bernasconi entrance, your chit might get stolen....its worth the 10 bucks to park inside or park in the neighborhood across from the dam and walk in...
Yea! Mr. Ed and Skippy. I am getting your wedding gift out of the closet and putting it in the van tonight. I forgot to give it to you at YOUR MOST FANTASTIC Wedding and Reception.
How many can boast they spent part of the reception in a river fully (or not) clothed along with many of the guests.
Just a reminder;
I am heading to Calif tomorrow
and I will be incomputercada, and can only be reached by Cell Phone.
The date for Big Rock is, Sunday November 18th.
I don't know what time the gate opens for Bernasconi Beach.

I will be getting there between 6am and 7am
If you need to get a hold of me my Cell is 760-780-8433
Lynne L (LL LL) can be reached by PM, thru ST.
I will be bringing a little gear and a rope, but it would be a good Idea
to bring some gear and rope yourself so we can get a few routes set up
I look forward to seeing you there!!!
Keep on BUMPING this thread to the top so everyone sees this thread thru the week.
I can make some potato salad and I will bring some beverages and a cooler. I could bring a two person kayak and a stand up paddle board if anyone wants to paddle. Are SUPs and kayaks allowed in the lake?
edit- according to the marina kayaks and SUPs are allowed. The only way to legally drink beer there is sitting in a boat
I am bringing some of my FAMOUS PeanutButter and Oatmeal Fudge Drops
some soft drinks and a few beers(on the sly)and enough fixins to
make about 6 salami sandwiches.
With everyone bringing a little something, No one will starve.
I'm looking to arrive at the parking lot between 7 and 8 am
I'm working on it, I would love to go but have been at work for the past 72 hours and need to talk with my wife to see if I can break away for the day. Maybe I will head out after church.
Cosmic....I'd like to hook up but am worried about getting shot by the zombie cops...? any guarantees that i won't get blasted by the zombie shooters...? RJ
Cosmic, Wendell, say hi to Rottingjohnny if he shows... apparently he and I go back a ways, to high school....or at least common girls! You guys have fun, be safe and do a 5.4 route for me in tow!
Peace
Hey Andy, I'll try and pick up some Lost Abbey. I like their Red Barn Ale. I've also got some salami and will get some fresh bagettes of bread, fruit....yummy.
10b4me, you should try and make it. The weather stations have been saying rain, but we've had nearly none. Cosmic and I agreed tonight to commit to going no matter the weather, hope you all will do same. Hey, I'll bring bocci ball, Wendell will be in charge of great stories....we will have a Blast, because we are tacos of campfire land. Cheers, Lynne
Lost Abbey is the bomb! I have a couple of Stone growlers... maybe some Sublimely Self Righteous or Arrogant Bastard. Oh, and I'll bring some tart apples and maybe some pears to go with the smoked tuna. Damn! The food is starting to sounding better than the climbing!
Weather here today in Northeast San Diego County.....no rain, partly cloudy and a balmy low 70's. We are @ an hour and a half from the climb site. Cheers, Lynne
I just spoke to Cosmic and he says he will be there rain or shine at around 8:00 AM
My weather links tell me it will be good weather. My experience is that Big Rock goes fine, even if a little damp. That desert granite dries out real fast.
Want everyone to know we have plenty of food so don't let that be an excuse not to come out. It will be awesome to get everyone together for the friend aspect as well as the rock. Peace and Joy, lynne
Weather was wonderful. So was Wendell. Great friend, climber, storyteller and info man. Cheers

Food was fantastico! Home made salsa, fresh smoked tuna caught and smoked by Baja Andy, Cosmics chocolate, oatmeal, peanut butter power cookies, home made potato salad jon beck (I believe), a great quiche compliments of Sheri Kos, and much more.
So great getting to meet more tacos face to face. You are an incredible group of people. Peace, lynnie
Phil G (think I met you at the Facelift two or so years ago.)
You mention all the years of climbing pleasure the Big Rock has given so many. Well, today Wendell told us that they are going to work on the dam upgrading it for earthquake tolerance.....seismic something :D
That's good, but the bad is they may be shutting down Big Rock for a year or two. Anyone hear about this?
Nice bunch of climbers enjoying a nice sunny day of climbing = awesome!
How the heck did Cosmic climb that right-facing slabby lieback/undercling flake thing without using his left arm?
Lloyd.
That was F'in sweet.
Thanks for the pics n vids.
Way cool gathering that I'm sorry I had to miss.
Nice tripod sends Cosmic, reminds me of the time some Stonemasters would
no hands the Trough.

That video of Bonzo chasing Rusty was hilarious! That's a good still shot of Rusty too.
Bonzo had a great time! I hope Rusty isn't too traumatized! :)
To the whole gang out there yesterday: It was great hanging with each one of you! Good peeps, one and all! Glad my daughter and her dog Bonzo were able to spend time with us!
Funny video, Rudder - she totally hiked that climb I hung all over - LOL!
Thanks, E! lol She did good especially considering her last climbing day resulted in a broken foot. :O She's a gamer, though! And, you and the Cosmic Brothers were climbing solid. :) The standouts to me were Skip, who has that exemplary footwork!, and ol' "15" (aka, Tripod, aka, Cosmic), well barely 15... he had 10 working, five bolted together, and five benched. haha
Driving home after such a great day led to much reflection. First climb Dan ever took me on was the Trough so lots of memories to process.
That morning, driving to the Rock with Dan, I was scared sless. I read a book about how to deal with fear the entire way to the Rock. Ok, I'm fortified, I can do this....got @ 20 feet up and freaked but Dan made me finish it, and I was glad. Not glad then, but glad eventually. :D
Haven't climbed in over a year but because of Sunday I hope to make climbing a primary goal along with kayaking. I loved Sunday and discovered I missed the rock.
Thought of so many of you in the community that have helped me on my way....:D
But two Dudes were with me on the rock Sunday. Todd Gordon telling me to "just keep moving" and Locker saying, "if you can do the climb then work it, do laps on it to improve."
Thanks to the Taco Community for helping me create a new life.
Well, Dude, at this moment packing up to go to JTree. After a year plus off the rock the Perris get together showed me I really like the rock and need to figure out ways to climb on. So, I'm Leaving at 5:30 am to hook up with the "Woody Memorial". Wish you were here too .
We did have a fine old time at Perris Lake, didn't we? The Taco Express carries with it so many great Dudettes and Dudes. Cheers to yo all.
Edit: Great pic of the maid on egyptian and you the best one armed bandit ever seen....Peace
You asked about climbing pants. I wore the tie dyes I told you about for the first time in JTree today. They held up super well even on Double Cross, a crack climb. You should definitely look into getting some.
