Back at Oxy [Occidental College] I heard there was a gymnastics team, so I went down to the gym and looked for the coach. He was a small, quiet man who gave no outward sign of the strength or grace he would later demonstrate on the rings or parallel bars.
My lack of experienced didn’t faze him. There was no tryout for the team. I would simply start to learn simple moves on the apparatus and how to put together a routine. There were only six or seven of us on the team, and we had no regular workouts, each of us spending some time in the gym as our time after classes permitted.
Along with climbers and skiers in those days [1955], we believed that improvement would come through time spent on the activity and that no additional training, either with weights for strength or running for endurance, was necessary.
I never got very good on any of the apparatus, but I was able to compete against other schools in Southern California since most of them didn’t have well-developed gymnastics programs. Three of the events I competed in disappeared several years later: the rope climb, the trampoline, and the flying rings.
The flying rings, an extension of the swings we all enjoyed as children, offered a release from gravity at the apex of each arc, and it was at that point that most of the tricks were performed, spins and layouts and dislocates, then a great swoop down and back up for another trick at the top.
Great fun but a little dangerous in theory, because if you let go of the rings at the wrong time and didn’t land on your feet there could be consequences. Perhaps that is why the event was discontinued.

Rope climb. It's not a competition now, but is still a trad climbing skill.

Trampolining is now an officially sanctioned event in the Olympics.

"This is bad. This is VERY BAD!"

But Sascha made it, praise be, and so did his duck friend, Sonja, who much later went to Warsaw after the Revolution and applied for a job as a duck at their zoo, even though she only spoke Russian. (She was desperate, Moosie!) They turned her away, of course. No one knows what became of her subsequent to that.

My Favorite Animal

Our teacher asked what my favorite animal was, and I said, "Fried chicken."
She said I wasn't funny, but she couldn't have been right, because everyone else laughed.

My parents told me to always tell the truth. I did. Fried chicken is my favorite animal.
I told my dad what happened, and he said my teacher was probably a member of PETA.
He said they love animals very much.

I do, too. Especially chicken, pork and beef. Anyway, my teacher sent me to the principal's office.
I told him what happened, and he laughed, too. Then he told me not to do it again.

The next day in class my teacher asked me what my favorite live animal was.
I told her it was chicken. She asked me why, so I told her it was because you could make them into fried chicken.

She sent me back to the principal's office. He laughed, and told me not to do it again.

I don't understand. My parents taught me to be honest, but my teacher doesn't like it when I am.

Today, my teacher asked me to tell her what famous person I admired most. I told her, "Colonel Sanders."

Guess where I am now...

Today is the Merced Art Hop.It's not to be confused with SF's Art Hoppe, the derelict journalist from my youth.

I know I've said it before, but it's WAY-NO, MooseDrool, not "WINE-OH." :0)

2014: MooseDragBunt was inducted into the National Old Polish Guys' Climbing Fall of Fame as Climbing Second of the Year and as their alternate selection for their Baseball Hall of Flames because he burned up the first base path all season last year.

This is the first year that the Art Hop was given a grant. This is the fourth year, so there have been about 18 of these events now.

My hat is off to Kevin and Kim for seeing this good thing through to this point. There have been in-fights between factions, and bullies who have tried to assume the position of responsibility, but none of them are as dedicated to preserving the authenticity of real, participatory art and exhibits of local, Merced-inspired artistic talent like K & K.

Saturday was really quite lightly-attended, but it is the middle of the summer doldrums.

Speaking of drums......and other fancy stuff...
A bientot.

And I'll be in touch.

This evening's slide show provided by the jump start from zBrown. Thanks, amigo, as I was getting tired.

Here is my new neighbor, Lulu.

^^^ All these folks on their way to Yosemite National Park?

As I recall, it was John Muir who said "get a horse" (or was it a donkey? or maybe even "go west young man").

Anyway, you can probably tell who wears the feathers in this family. They are for the most part armed and should be considered dangerous. An appearance in Merced would be considered an omen, neither good nor bad nor evan a "Little Village", just an omen.

WTF? Did they have photoshop back when Bill was still with us?

Pictures cannot tell a lie (it is rumoured), so here is the long sought after proof that Herr Braun was indeed a member of Bill's traveling show.

No postcards, but the circus is indeed in towne.

These guys did follow the advice and got onboard with the horse thing. However, as any fool can see that is not the road to Merced.
