Ordinarily I wouldn't put up a cover of Warren's work if the coverers hadn't actually looked on Gower Ave., but Pickins have been slim, if you know what I mean.

Groovy? - you be the judge.

I never did see Lon Chaney (Sr. or Jr.) and I used to live in Hollywood.

Draw blood. Isn't that George Alexander on bass?

It feels like coming into work on Monday, in some ways.

I got worked at the Thumb, as THocking a-saith.

At least I did not die.

Nor die did he in my place, as a true partner would, for the follower must not fall if he is not to fall into total whatever-soever-however it may forthcome.

California is its own reward, for the East Coasters who listen to us West Coast-costers, us shucky-juvy wannabe surf-club types, and wonder from what side of which moon we come.

Be here now, then, or sometime other, the cities are sucky, and one is lucky, when one has been born to country ways. The real California resides in the mind, as it always must.

Yes, Ah'm back, Mona. I'm coming out on the front.

Bumpity-bump.

Dino Valente sort of took a good thing and made it different.

I won'st bother you with the upcoming Courthouse Museum exploration of Merced's rich musical past any longer.

It begins as an exhibit this Thursday with live music which begins at 6 pm.

"Michael Kennedy, the founder of the blog Merced Music (and former member of a suspiciously Flame-infeckted group called Snooze You Loose which included Bullfrog) has created a virtual shrine to a generation of music in Merced that would leave a mark across the country...
That era really started in 1956 when Roddy Jackson put together one of the first interracial rock bands in the country....It was a really important first.
He credits Roddy Jackson and the Blue Notes with getting the entire community plugged into the music scene and learning how to play guitar.
Then the Brogues broke as an early 60s group with a serious attitude problem and then a straight line into psychedelic music...
The popularity of this emerging brand of music led to many famous acts stopping in Merced, including Janis Joplin and the Doors [though I must cite this error: it was the Holding Co.; the Coodrs did play here. Twice. Once with a local sub drummer.

Yes, you can Google www.mercedmusic.wordpress.com

I am logged kin to Wired Cafe, the internet cafe in town.

George Fenneman, what is today's magic word?

"Bowels, Groucho."

It may be worth noting, musically, that on the same Saturday night that Mel's rocked to the blues, the Merced Theater presented ballet. It may also be worth nothing, musically or otherwise.

On arriving back in town from THocking's and Maureen's, I found:

1. The elevator still not working right: it hit each floor before stopping at the lobby, and it hit each floor going to the floor that called it.
2. I was jonesing for another steak like the ones we grilled on Solstice eve at Tom's Thumb.

So I called the Rev, invited myself up, and bought some "fully-aged" beef (reduced price) and one-pound potatoes and hit the road to Greeley Hill.

We traded tales, laughed, and discussed the possible consequences of Taj Mahal's death*, the outcome of the current episode of "Snapped" which Denice was watching, the fact that Rod Whittaker is a surprisingly talented individual (musically!), what it's like to not have millions of dollars cluttering our lives, and the Foresta fire of yore.

I have hundreds of photos, as THocking hath a-saith. I am busying myxelf reading Charis Wilson West's tales of her and Edward's trips involving photographing California in the thirties. And the James Branch Cabell novel I recently purchased down in Idyllwild, The Way of Ecben.

It's going to be a few days, maybe tomorrow, before my computer's back home and healthy again.

A-raining now, but it's not a hard rain, thank ya, Jah.

Till the again, play fair, kiddies.

*Barbara Jones, an old friend whom I visited the other day in the Bay Area, had heard rumblings about Taj's demise, which has NOT come to pass, thank ya, Jah.

And here's the big ultimate.

Just tonight, after having posted that last reply, I received an email from Barbara's husband, my old Flames partner Larry, that she has passed away in her sleep!

What a blessing that I was able to visit her for that one part of the day last week. Thank you for that, and grant her rest, Lord of All.
I have been stranged-out before, but this is just freaky.

Yep, they look to be twins, but close inspection is revelatory...

Nee and Bee?

These are from yesterday afternoon. The original ElCapitan HS, constructed to open in 1958, lasted three years only before it became Merced HS North Campus. It was surrounded by tomato fields and cow pasture.

As the new era dawns, the old just keeps jealously standing firm. New campus, same old tomatoes. But not for long.
It was threatening to rain and did for just a while earlier out in the county.

Anyone remember the word kype? As in:

The boy glommed onto the toy and then kyped it from his friend.

It was used amongst the pretty rowdy element I was known to associate with in Chula Vista in the 1950's (sure glad I didn't fall in with them).

Then there was the five-finger discount and the midnight auto supply.

Apparently, from my research on crime stats in this area, they're still popular.

Feel to free to have a go at it for your respective/respected areas.

Kyping Marlboro reds from the grocery in Sacto got me and my buddy a session in front of the parents and siblings smoking Camels, ten each.

God help us if we inhaled!

We were not living up to the Boy Scout ideals of honesty, but we were pretty damn brave...

Scouting and Catholic school round a boy out and warp him at the same time.

The Padilla Three, Joe, Mickey, and Pete, were the sons of our Explorer leader, Manuel, USMC. The Padilla Cabin still stands in Foresta after the fires of yore because THEY WERE PREPARED!

We scouts had helped dig the well and cistern, check.
The Pads' place was directly across the way from the Foresta Fire STation, check and mate!
The last two photos here show what the hills in the Park would look like with no fire prevention. Real glamorous, huh? It's been about fifteen years now since that fire.
