I voted for you without going to your sites or hearing your music because I know you must have been surrounded by bad influences your entire life :) your music must be either hard core, rowdy, funky, or decadent and probably is a mixture of all of the above. Now I will go have a look and a listen to see what the climbing environment does to offspring. Good Luck!

Money and sympathy LOL.

I voted but it feels like cheating since I haven't heard all the bands play. Or any of the bands play: and I didn't see The Swayback listed. Wasn't Sugarloaf from Denver? Green Eyed Lady, awesome song. I'd still vote for them. Except they broke up 30 years ago....and they aren't listed either.

Congratulations, you have successfully entered this contest. Good luck!

Think of me when you get a record deal.

ps, I made up an email address and then said I wanted them bothering me every 15 min with bullshit emails. Hope that doesn't nix your record deal.

Doogal - Actually I was very impressed with the vocals. That was the primary reason I liked the song A-La-Mode & said it was polished & professional sounding! Actually, it all comes together in that song and the end result sounds great, is what I was saying!

Regardless, that's pretty cool being flexible/multi-talented!

Also to add to the topic, I just found out that everyone is allowed to vote once per day. which i think is ridiculous. i think it should be limited to one and one only. it lasts up until the 17th, so if you're into the music enough that would be a cool way to receive more votes. i wont hold anyone to that, but if you're down, go for it! :)

Concerning the "Fattrad" quote - Well, I considered putting Cosmiccragman instead of Fattrad, but I figured the kid was already aware of that. Slayton - I didn't hear any other bands, I didn't vote!

This isn't necessarily about the best band. It is about the band that you would like to see win the promotion out of the whole lot. Since you/we don't know sh#t about the other bands (nor do any of the peeps voting for someone else), but you do know of Locker & his son from here on ST, and that his band desires to win/make use of the opportunity they are offering, we should vote for them.

It's a local/Denver radio station using local bands as a gimmick to attract listener's to their station. It isn't about which band is the best, it's about how many people they can get through them to sign up for their station. I suspect one of these bands has a mother who belongs to a local Mormon church and has got the whole congregation voting every day.

So, whomever wins, it prollie has little to do with their individual talent[s]! So, like I already said, quit being weenies about it and just vote!

A little bit late here but so what. At the very least it bumps Doogal's music right?

This isn't necessarily about the best band. It is about the band that you would like to see win the promotion out of the whole lot. Since you/we don't know sh#t about the other bands (nor do any of the peeps voting for someone else), but you do know of Locker & his son from here on ST, and that his band desires to win/make use of the opportunity they are offering, we should vote for them.

Tribalism at it's best/worst. This whole thing was presented as a "vote" for the best band. A "vote" portends a choice. A choice means that there are others to vote for. I couldn't find those others.

I realize it's a gimmick by the radio station to get listeners to yada yada yada. So what.

Except from Supertopo I don't know Locker, though I've probably been within spitting distance from him over the years in and around Joshua Tree. I certainly don't know his son. I think that it's great to seek support for ones endeavors wherever one can get it. I just also think that if you're going to ask for that support in the terms of a vote for those endeavors, be it music or anything else, when that vote is based upon some kind of comparison against others, I would like to be afforded the courtesy of learning about (or hearing in this case) the others.

A "vote" with only one choice is not a vote. It just seems to smack of some kind of tribal mentality. Of course, I support Doogal, Locker's son, in his musical quest, if only in wishing hi the best. But if I'm asked to vote between his music and others in some kind of competition I would at least like to hear the competition.

Is that so wrong? Am I violating something here.

I realize that the competition is quite done already (sorry you didn't win Doogal) but this whole premise just strikes a nerve.

Slayton - Tribalism at it's best/worse.

My niece (9 y.o.) is entering her dog in "The Ugliest Dog In The World" contest. I here there is something like 80,000 entries so far, and it is just getting started. It is sponsored by a local radio station also. I suspect it is also a gimmick, "yada, yada, yada" ...! She knows the dog is pretty ugly (a mexican hairless) because everyone, including all her young friends, have always said so. But, she is very attached to it for just that reason. She is very excited about the contest.

Perhaps I will post a pic of the dog, but what difference would that make to you, eh? Since i seriously doubt you have the time to look at all the 80,000 and counting pictures that are continuing to come in daily. I understand that would be very compromising to your staunch moral and ethical principals & really wouldn't be fair to the 80,000+ other contestants, eh? I mean, it would prollie keep you up nights knowing that there could be an uglier dog than Bandit (his name) on the planet and you voted for my nieces dog instead.

BTW, I have little hopes that she will win the contest, but that isn't really important. I was mainly hoping that she would get a lift from all the positive comments and support ((feedback). Because she has been going through a ruff spell lately, and she could use some encouragement.

But, no worries, bro! In fact, I wish we had more peeps like you on this planet, no special considerations, no compromising, no bending the rules, nope, not one iota. Very commendable, imo!

Although, i was just wondering if, let's say yer kid, or mom, granny or whomever, was running for the most popular kid, mom, grandma in ... uhhhh ... let's say Denver (just another gimic, "yada, yada, yada" radio contest) wud ya really want to/have to interview all the "kids, moms, grandmas" or whomever in Denver in order to cast a vote? Particularly when you know it's to get as many people as possible to tune in during a ratings sweep (or whatever) cuz they are allowing people to vote multiple times, and all that amounts to is who can convince the most people, friends, neighbors, etc (ie, who goes to the largest church/gym/work place, etc) and not whom is really the best whatever?

And, I do understand that there is a condition known as "Anal Retentiveness" that could be afflicting ... oh, nevermind!!

edit: regarding the "Tribalism" the contest was obviously focusing on, depending on tribalism to bring in new listeners, get people to join and recieve their stations updates, etc (i did) and perhaps attract viewers during a ratings sweep or whatever. With people being allowed to vote more than once over a week long period, this has little to do with who is the "best" band.

Besides, like it has been said/implied, he was looking to grow his fan base, positve vibes, and get some feedback, etc! And so what if he had some hope for a very long shot at winning (which would simply give them some momentary attention). Human nature, eh? And human nature says, imo, give him the benefit of the doubt.

Slayton - A vote with only one choice is not a vote.
It would have been a vote of encouragment. A little positive (or negative, i suppose) feedback. A vote of approval for what they are attempting to accomplish (continue to make music/gain a few fans). A vote that would inpire them to continue. Did you listen to the two songs? Where they worth your effort which would ammount to one (1) vote of approval?

Slayton - Is that so wrong. Am I violating something here?
Uhhmn ... no comment!!

In regards to "best" band, there were numerous, 50+ bands. And, as everyone that is atuned to music fairly well knows, it is not about the best band per say. It's about YOUR favorite band. The scene you belong to, who your friends are voting for, etc! It is not necessarly about talent. Bands that have been around a long time and play the same old cover songs at local watering holes could win. Simply because they have been around a long time and have a lot of fans. But, as far as ST goes, it prollie had little to do with any of that. I mean in the grand scheme of things, it had little to do with winning the contest, imo! Wudevah!!!!

EDIT: IF, it was a REAL contest to establish exactly who was THE best band in Denver, don't you think they would have given an example (1-2 songs) of each of the contestant's? Like American Idol, or whatever. But, no, they just listed the names and expected the bands and fans to stir up support/votes. And most prollie had no clue what he majority of other 50+ bands sounded like.

Splitter, chill the f*#k out. I understand the idea to get the word out, to get the music out to be heard by many by any means possible if you're creating music. I totally support that.

Just don't ask me to support you, your art work, your music, or your ugly dog if I'm not given the opportunity to see, hear, or evaluate the competition. I clicked on links trying to hear the competition, but was only ever directed to Doogals music. Nothing else. No other music to guage my vote or comparison.

My niece (9 y.o.) is entering her dog in "The Ugliest Dog In The World" contest
... . ..
Perhaps I will post a pic of the dog, but what difference would that make to you, eh? Since i seriously doubt you have the time to look at all the 80,000 and counting pictures that are continuing to come in daily.

Well, Splitter, if unlike the vote for the best band shite you provided a link to look at the dogs, if I were to actually vote I would at least try to look at them. In the case of the bands I didn't have that opportunity.

BTW, I have little hopes that she will win the contest, but that isn't really important. I was mainly hoping that she would get a lift from all the positive comments and support ((feedback). Because she has been going through a ruff spell lately, and she could use some encouragement.

I could state that a 9 year old entering her ugly dog in a contest might be a bit different than a young adult in a a band proffering his music against other is different but so what. Regardless of your niece's ruff spell and the encouragement needed, the internet might not be the best place for that.

Screw it. I started to try reading through your post and responding in kind but it just seems useless. There seems to be a very fundamental disagreement or misunderstanding that seems to set us apart. Whatever.

I clicked on the original link to give it a listen. I was asked to vote. From the link and from the station I couldn't find a means to listen to others that were also in the competition. If it makes me an as#@&%e to not vote because of that so be it. If it makes me an as#@&%e or just anal retentive, to Splitter, to not vote for something mindlessly in order to support something I know nothing about, so be it. I'm an anal retentive as#@&%e, which might be an oxymoron, or if not, there should be some joke to be made of it.

It would have been a vote of encouragment. A little positive (or negative, i suppose) feedback.
Because I could only hear Dougal's band, because I only had the opportunity to vote for his band and couldn't hear other's or vote for them there could be no negative feedback. There was no vote.

I understand sticking by family, friends and supporting them. I'm all about it. But if you're going to ask me to listen to your music (art, dog, or whatever) and ask me to vote to pick the best, you damn well better offer me the ability to see the others. In this case I wasn't offered the ability to hear the others.

If that makes me an anal retentive as#@&%e so be it.

Slayton,

We hear you loud and clear. I think a few others voiced the same concerns. The radio station didn't list any of the bands songs to compare or judge. So, it was not a contest like American Idol. It was a contest to see which band in Denver had the most fans. If you had a favorite band that was on that list, then vote for it. There were numerous bands listed (30 or so). I seriously doubt that anyone would sit down and try and track down songs from each band (if they even had any on youtube/online, etc) and then listen to them. It wasn't about how talented they were. It was about which one had the most fans that would take the time to vote for them (and in the process get people to tune into the radio station). That was the conclusion I came to. So, since I only new of one band, Lockers son, I did him the favor he requested and voted for him. No major ethical, moral or analytical reasoning behind it. Just a simple gesture of kindness (or whatever).

If that makes me an as#@&%e...!
I never said anything about you being an "as#@&%e"! You came to that assumption/conclusion on your own.

BTW, "anal retentive" (or anal attentive) has nothing to do with being an "as#@&%e". It simply applies to someone who pays such attention to detail that the obsession becomes an annoyance to others.

I did suggest that you may have those (anal retentive) qualities. No big deal, they are prevalent in certain aspects of our society. Are actually regarded as a plus in certain fields (or so it seems) ... so don't sweat it.

edit: "I did suggest that..." because you seem rather proccupied with the whole matter. Particularly when you continue to rant (okay, maybe you are simply attempting to clarify your stance) weeks after it has become a non issue!!

And I can see your point, but, the radio station should either posted at least one song from each group, or not referred to it as a contest which would decide which band was the next "best" band. Kind of misleading, imo! Maybe I missed something, or perhaps the radio station had been playing songs form all the contestants for the prior month or so, I don't know (but i doubt it). And frankly, i don't give a sh#t ... i guess that makes me non-anal, eh? lol
