I will be heading to the Valley this weekend. I would love some new gear.
I will gladly remove Pete of all this gear that seems to be such a burden.

Why wait for the toss? Just booty his stuff at the base after he's fixed a few pitches. Not fair. . . not ethical. . . I think he has already established that we don't need to care about 'rules'.

I stand by my previous statement in Matts tosser thread.

WTF Pete?

I like the idea of collecting the gear and selling it for charity.
I would also love to see Pete's reaction when he cries foul, and comes here posting for his bootied gear.

I don't know Pete from the next guy, but it was odd to read him being the ethics/trash police with a very demanding tone on the otherwise cool Call of the Wild thread, and the next day read this stuff.

WBraun,
I plan to be on top of the capitan' on Saturday. It just so happens I will have Advil, and tiger Balm with me.
My new plans are to toss the sh#t over the edge.
I will then Rap the hole face with a single rope, and wait for Pete's bootie.

I too was shocked to hear of Pete's customary method of getting his bags down after one of his epic wall ascents. How has this NOT been reported to Park Police or a ranger so that he can get cited just like the poor fool Chris whats-his-name that tried to rap off El Cap and got ripped (including by Pete)? Everyone was so incensed that young Chris and his clueless partner endangered YOSAR etc. in having to be rescued. Well, Pete's exploits are 10,000 times more dangerous and risky to many more than YOSAR. How can he chime in with lectures to Hudon and others about safe practices and ethics on El Cap and yet repeatedly toss his bags off the top of the cliff? He's the worst kind of hypocrite and it's a miracle no one has been hurt or killed by his selfish lazy actions.

I do not think throwing your sh#t down is a good idea, of course. But I remember him being quite nice on forums to some of the beginners, including myself. He even invited a few to join him on a wall for a few pitches.
Maybe he had a rough situation up there? Or who knows. All of us humans are not perfect and have done things that none of us would be proud of. Living with not being welcome on the bridge is a fairly severe price to pay for your sins already.
Hope he learned his lesson and does not do it again.

Wow, so much hate. So much self-righteous indignation.
How many of you have never broken a rule in the Park? Never bivied in the boulders? In your van?
I did for years.
Has anyone ever been killed by a falling haulbag? Sure, I guess it could happen but the odds???
Did he parachute it or just let it fly?
Way back in the 90s when I was doing walls the bag toss was commonplace, and no, I never did. And no, I’m not a huge Pete fan.
I guess what I’m saying is- when did tattling to the tool on your fellow climber become so cool. Kind of makes me want to take up golf or something.

I don't see how I am being a tough guy. If I saw him in person, which I most likely never will, I would say the same thing.
"Are you F-ing crazy thowing sh#t off the capitan"
However, I didn't say a thing to attack his character other than he was a wanker.
I just wanted Bootied gear.
The thought that the community spoke load and clear, and he apparently listend (which is still to be proven), is a great thing. Others were talking about the LEO's getting involved.
This just goes to show we don't need no stinking LEO's just a bunch of internet hardman.

" Classic humanism"
Even in the small microcasm world of climbers. With as much respect we show for our mother Earth and our own bodies and our own belayer's. How is it that we want to disintegrate one of our own when he displays misjustice? within the arguments comes a standstill. Therefore we call in a arbitrator. Known as the government. Who without understanding our conscience, impedes a denominal sentence. Is this satisfactory to my conscience? I say not!
I say Pete is sentenced to 30 days of hard labor as a Porter. And must carry all our haul bags off the Captain. That would soothe my conscience.

That sounds pretty bad but I would like to hear more details on this.
I don't think for tossers it's about the work involved as having to hike back up to the base and retrieve one's gear isn't much more work than just carrying it down.
Whatever the case, it sounds like a bad idea and is clearly frowned upon by the community. (or at least on supertopo...)

I guess it all depends on how much you take. Apparently they took enough that it would require another trip back to the top. Hince, the tossing.
Either way, I'm not sure which is worse, busting your ass and making enough to pay for a guided trip up Everest, where sherpas do all the work, or tossing gear to save a trip back up. Such precious time the people have, to risk others.
I too would like to hear the details on WBruans experience.

A lot of west coast yammering. East coast style is to simply tax the wrong doer the approriate amount plus a vig. Depending on the severity of the f-up, the vig could be quite substantial. If you chucked a bag off the top of the shield july 4th week 1999, i taxed you plus a reasonable amount for the vig. We were walking into lurking fear @ 5am and almost got pasted by your carelessness.Be happy we didn't get hurt or the penalth would have been significantly steeper.
