Any information on a ~35 foot tall, slightly overhanging hands to slight offwidth crack immediately within the Portal Campground? It splits a boulder that sits just behind some of the campsite bathrooms on the car path through the campground. Easy climb up the back to 2 bolts for toprope setup.

See above photos for the crack I'm referring to.

That crack is mid grade 5.10. You need some larger cams for the bottom & some thin stuff for the top. There is a definite crux where the crack closes off for 3 or 4 feet & opens up again to fingers / thin hands. I first discovered this way back in 1981, and the bolts looked old back then.

I'll be up there this weekend and look forward to climbing it.

Any other gems in the campground you have discovered?

There is a nice crack by the pond at the end of the loop, past the Whitney Portal store & grill. There are some nice boulder problems scattered around but I could never begin to describe their location without being up there myself.

FWIW- the cragging aroung the portal can be excellent. Routes like Bony Fingers, Aplomb, and the routes above Tanager are nice and worth doing if you're hangig out at the portal.
