The Rainbow Pride Parade: May 13th & 14th 2006

It all started when the Handsome Boy Modeling School allowed two of its students to check out early and head down to Las Vegas.
We had decided on the Original Route of the Rainbow Wall in RedRocks because it was a proud line and the timing could not have been better,
Las Vegas was just breaking 100 degrees.

We passed through Filmore and Beaver and I have to say that Beaver is a very tight-knit community of warm and friendly people.

We blazed on down to Vegas and arrived a little past Midnight. Blast-off was at 5:00 am the next morning.

Sh#t, 5:30 am rolls around and it is already 95 degrees. We had better start hiking quick.

Two hours later we are at the base of the route, only to find it in the sun.

Three hours of napping and waiting finally allow us to start up, but we soon realize that a team of four has scooped us.

They allow us to get a head-start and Perkey onsights the first pitch and the second pitch with a sideways dyno.

I onsight the third, enduro pitch and here Perkey onsights the fourth pitch.

Perkey also onsights the fifth pitch with a roof traverse that ends up being easier than it looks.

I onsight the sixth and seventh pitches which bring us to the Over the Rainbow Ledge System.

We look down and find our friends making good time in the lower Dihedrals.

We take a quick lunch and Perkey admires the fact that we are only 10 miles from a pool and a Pina Colada at the Luxor.

A quick traverse off of the bivy ledge leads into the Red Dihedral where Perkey onsights the tricky and dynamic pitch.

I pump out on the next pitch and fall. Perkey takes the lead and flashes the pitch.

By now darkness is creeping down and we must bail without doing the final crux pitch in the Red Dihedral. Bummer.

Rapping the route goes smoothly and we are back at the base un under an hour.

I find a small, flat spot to ponder the hike down.

Reversing the slabs approach in the dark proves to be fun and we thrash downward towards cold beer.

After drinking our last water several hours ago Perkey tries to cool down in Pine Creek.

Luckily Perkey finds a friendly toad and after a few licks the rest of the descent just flies by.

Back at the car we admire RedRocks under a full moon.

The next day was spent climbing Frogland as a casual cruise.

One of the stranger objective hazards I have ever seen.

Home. Sunburned. Planning.

Why are there bolts around those cracks?

Nice photos, a classic route but as with many here at Red Rocks they have a pussy bolt ethic here. Just did Levitation 29 last week. About 5x too many bolts (no exageration).

Just keep telling yourselves that bolts are the problem. . .

I'm curious (if you'll pardon the expression) about your experience in Beaver.

Handsome B: good work...

I was scared of this thread because I thought I would see pics of you and Rob Halford on float in West Hollywood.... glad I looked.

Awesome photos. Good TR man.

However, one little nitpick....when I saw the post "Rainbow Pride Parade", I thought I was gonna click and see this...since Rainbow Pride also means something else:

Ouch!

Those are terrific pictures of the trip.

That float is interesting. Those burly guys are built like cops.

I'm with Fluoride - I was expecting to see queer cowboys cornholing each other or something, so I almost didn't click.

NICE REPORT! Great photography, too.

Finally someone who gets it about properly resizing images in McTopo so they aren't too "fat" to view in the forum. Well done!

I am just wondering if anybody has been to the base of the rainbow wall recently and can report on the water status.

Last year around late may there was an unusable dribble coming down the slabs.
Is there ever any usable water near the wall?

Thanks in advance for any information!

Darn it.

Did you climb it in a day or haul your water in for a multi-day?

thanks for the reply.

I hauled.

A two man team showed up to knock it off in a day. They only had 2 liters of water between them.

Cool your jets, Ouch!

Unfortunately, they are knott CHP, and we all know how much you love those boyz...

BTW, that's the best Photo Report™ I've seen in a while.
Really, really nice photos - and especially the presentation.
