John was a good climbing partner and a generous man - whom I saw more infrequently than I would have liked. He offered to tutor my wife in math a while back, out of sheer kindness. Now on the verge of receiving her doctorate, I'm sure she would credit John with nudging her in the right direction!

Sincere condolences to Linda and Kai.

I heard the news last Monday morning. I was shocked. What a terrible loss.

Although I have never climbed with John outside, we shared a rope many times at Rockreation. EVERY time he climbed, I was blown away by how damn strong he was. So smooth and methodical. He was always so positive and upbeat, and a real pleasure to chat with.

I distinctly remember hanging out with him in his office one morning a few years back talking about grad school, and of course climbing. He shared a bunch of old photos from "back in the day." I remember one of him soloing some 5.10 slab in EBs. I had walked over there from my lab to pick up a pair of shoes. A pair of Acopa Spectres, in fact. I believe Bachar had given John the pair of shoes while they were out climbing one day. But Rosendahl preferred to climb with La Sportiva Miuras. So he passed the spectres on to me. A couple days later I cruised out to Joshua Tree and ran a solo circuit in the fading light of the evening with those shoes.

John loved climbing with his son so much. I remember how John was so proud of Kai.

Hey you guys, here is a link to a short article about John at Rock and
It doesn't tell a whole lot about his life but can give you an idea what a stud climber/athlete he was.
There are a couple of good pics.

I knew John from the climbing gym as well and like many have said he was an excellent climber, and a nice guy. I agree!

My condolences go out to his family.

I enjoyed climbing with John at Rocreation. It was just knowing that he would move up a climb so smooth and quiet that made me try harder.

I am so so sad to hear this.
I just Googled John's name to find the link to his record for the John Muir trail (Self-Contained) -- but sadly I found this post and that he has passed away.

John was a very good friend and teacher to me. I went to UCI and he was my first Physics professor and the reason I changed my major to Physics. I then worked for John for several years as a lab assistance as he was in charge of all the labs.

He was truly one of the best men I have ever met in my life and one of the very few I have ever looked up to. I cannot tell you how sad it makes me to see this news. May he rest in peace.

Hi everyone, I'm amazed at all the wonderful memories of my Uncle, John. I'm sure I met some of you at the memorial in December.

If you're interested, I wrote this post about my Uncle's passing, and have included a slideshow from the memorial:

Thank you for your kind words about John.

Hello All,

I wanted to post this in case you all had a free moment this Sunday to honor John's life. Rockreation in Costa Mesa is hosting a friendly 'free-solo' format (includes down-climbing) competition in honor of John.

John was an integral part of our climbing community, always offering a belay and climbing session regardless of climbing ability. He will always be remembered to me as being encouraging, inspiring, and providing great mentorship.

Stop by if you can make it.

Thanks for your time,
