Rumor has it, Psyche Ledge, Saturday September 8, 19:00 ish?
Unsanctioned, unofficial.
It's a Park now so unlike the old days, no booze, no fire, no mayhem.
Possible dinosaur sightings, war stories, slander and lies.
Unofficially, there's interest in designating the old haunt as historically significant and allowing for for some renovations.
That is if course if we're interested.
What's the odds it rains?

And if you believe that, I have a gondola to sell you.

Sounds like fun, and I hope to be there. Can I bring my pet p'terodactyl?

Flagrant bumpmosis.
Rumor persists, might spread it some more.
Think I'll check it out, just in case it's for real.
Especially if Mighty's going to be there and BK starts a rave.

I got the days off and will be headed north across the border where security restricts the transportation of things that completely normal people use to enhance the enjoyment of their meager lives or to reduce the pain of the struggle. Saturday Sept. 8th is the Grand Fondo so the Hwy 99 will be closed from West Van to Squamish for something like from 6:30 AM to 4 PM or something like that. expect multi-hour delays, take the train )ha) or get there the night before...

They are expecting most of the riders to be through Squamish by 12:30 so things should settle down for that portion of the highway by early afternoon. Things will be pretty crazy going up to Whistler for the afternoon and coming home after the event but should settle down by the time the Psyche Ledge party is wrapping up.. I`m gonna try and get a site at the chief so i don`t have to go far after :)

Here is the link to the traffic advisory http://www2.news.gov.bc.ca/news_releases_2009-2013/2012TRAN0082-001270.htm

edit: The highway is not closed! They are just advising of delays.

Grand fondle has screwed me the past 2 years trying to get to work in whis by 4pm on Saturday night. It will be a huge factor south of & in Squamish till at least noon. If u are heading south before then don't expect making a left turn off the hwy an easy task. If u are heading north from van may the force be with you as you share a collective current of over 8000 pairs of spandex shorts. Sorry I won't be there, sounds like a good session will go down.

Hmm, the fire thing at least may not be "on" this weekend.

District of Squamish
September 6, 2012
For Immediate Release:

“Extreme” Fire Hazard Throughout the DOS and the Coastal Fire Zone
Hot, dry weather in combination with forecasted outflow winds and no rain expected in the near future has resulted in EXTREME fire hazard conditions throughout the District of Squamish and the Coastal Fire Zone.

A fire ban has not been issued at this time, but fires are restricted to private property and supervised campsites. Fires in campsites and on private property should be no greater than .5 meters in height/diameter and under the constant supervision of a competent adult with a water source readily available to extinguish the fire when required.

The public is advised to use caution when engaging in outdoor activities as once started fires have the potential to spread rapidly and can threaten property and life. The public is also reminded that smoking is not permitted on trails, in parks and other public outdoor areas. Anyone who violates or committees an offence under the District of Fire Service Bylaw can be liable on a summary conviction to a fine up to $10,000.

With many exciting events taking place this weekend (GranFondo, Brackendale Fall Fair etc.), the public is encouraged to call 911 immediately if they spot grass or bush fires or if there appears to be an abandoned campfire. Every fire situation is a race against time. Quick action by the public ensures emergency response teams can react swiftly and minimize the damage. With the current dry conditions, a carelessly tossed cigarette, sparks from a chainsaw or a hot exhaust pipe coming into contact with grass all have the potential to start a wildfire. The “Extreme” fire hazard rating demands extreme caution.

For BC Parks restrictions visit www.bcparks.ca and restriction for lands beyond the District of Squamish visit the BC Ministry of Forest and Range Forest Service, Wildfire Management Branch website at www.bcwildfire.ca. If you require more information, please contact Squamish Fire Rescue at 604-898-9666.

Sounds like there may be a full closure next week, if we don't get some rain.

It sounds like a gas-fired BBQ might be OK, although we'd probably want to ask, and have fire putting out equipment close by. A dragon might be helpful in that regard - we could use it for preventive purposes.

Well, we did it.

In spite of the short notice, minimal promotion, the Grand Fondo and prior commitments of invited alumni (Tami especially), approximately thirty people showed up for the (first annual?) Psyche Ledge Rendezvous.
(Regrets and best wishes were sent by Robin Barley, Kevin McLane, Scott Flavelle, Dick Mitten and Dave Lane to name a few.)

Jim showed up early, helped with preparations and provided enough baked sockeye salmon to go around.
The Bear made a brief appearance but couldn't handle the bugs (or so he said) and vanished.
Big Jim validated the whole affair with his presence, brought lawn chairs, shared his smokes and provided much needed historical perspective.
Wayno made the trip up from Seattle with wife and dog and along with a couple visting lads from south of the line, made sure the Americans were well represented.
Mighty provided avuncular oversight and moral compass.
Senator Howe showed up once things were underway and dignified the proceedings as only he can.
Big Mike, Relic, Luke and friends introduced some of Squamish's new generation to the old and now they have their own Psyche Ledge stories and personal connections.

Everybody stayed tied in on The Ledge, behaved well and left the place tidy. Most agreed Psyche Ledge is deserving of recognition as historically significant and important to Squamish climbing culture.

Interpretive signage, a covered picnic table and an annual rendezvous will be discussed with BC Parks.

Thanks to everyone who showed up, helped out and made this a worthwhile and rewarding effort.
(Everyone else is LIGHT!)
See you next year?

PB

That was a lot of fun. It was great to finally shake hands with some of the names I've seen here and on squamishclimbing.com. Sorry I had to leave early, parental obligations... I vote for a bi-annual event signalling the dawn and dusk of each climbing season. Hopefully lots more of you can make it next time.

It would be great to have that little patch of old pavement recognized officially for it's significance to Squamish's climbing history. I'm behind you 100% on that initiative Perry.

Good to see interest in a repeat of this worthy event as I was starting to ponder putting out the word.
I prefer Saturday evening to Friday as we generally had our biggest gatherings on Saturdays in the old days. It's also easier for me to prep for and attend on a Saturday than a Friday what with work etc. Ditto for others who may have to travel any distance.
Last year was the second Saturday in September.
This year that date is Sept 14 which conflicts with Luke and Aislin's wedding so that's not ideal.
Didn't think it would be cool to do it on the Labour Day weekend but that's not out of the question for me.
So, Saturday Sept. 7, or Saturday Sept 21 are the best options.
I'll call it based on responses.

Jim, when you say BBq, does that mean you have a grilling device? I can cook the Carne Asada on anything from an open fire to a skillet on a stove. I just need to know what I'm dealing with and plan accordingly.

Several of my close friends and a Friendly Ghost are planning on being in town from September 13- 21 so if you folks are up for having this party on either weekend we would be honored to attend!

The weekend of the 20-21 would be best as we will be badly in need of liquid medication (and Psyche) by that point. But earlier works too if Big Mike can delay his exit a couple of days we should be able to get there by Saturday evening without too much problem.

Just a thought as it would be fun to see everyone and the timing seems perfect!

Psyche Ledge bump.
Fifteen days to go?

As some may have noticed, the north end of the Ledge got a bit of a haircut from the recent Hydro ROW clean up and now there's a BC Parks outhouse appropriately adjacent.

A light tune up with the weed whacker and we're looking good.

Looking forward, I'm advocating building some kind of sheltered hang with a bit of history.
In theory, a place to meet, sort some gear, stretch, chill, pose down, mime, pontificate and wax verbose.

BC Parks will support the right thing done the right way.

As well, not sure if this is too far off topic to post here, but since it sounds like there's gonna be some OG's in town from both near and far maybe we should consider resurrecting Big Mikes exasperator exasperenza speed climbing comp? Either earlier the day of, or on the following day?

I had a dream with Daryl in it. He said they don't have beers over there and he is really thirsty, could you bring some beers with you? And some smokes, too. ;)

Last night was a blast! Thanks to Jim Brennan for the fabulous hosting duties, and Perry for his behind the scenes magic to make it all happen.

I was flitting around like fly at camp 4, trying unsuccessfully to be a part of every single conversation happening. Of course i would need to be omnipotent to actually accomplish this impossible task.

Dean was remembering nights on the ledge fondly and told a story about waking up, soaked with moisture and covered in mosquitos.

"Why didn't we camp in tents??" Dean said.. Lol

I asked Tami this question and she said that no one they would have to take the tents down and there was no where secure hang them for the day while they went climbing!

Big Jim told me about the first mountain he climbed in Powell River, with a German fellow he'd met. He'd never climbed a mountain before, but he'd heard a local recluse had ascended his prize. This fellow was apparently quite the hermit who people were quite scared of.

He went to his house which had a high fenced perimeter with no trespassing signs everywhere. Jim wouldn't be dissuaded by a simple fence. He hopped over it and the gentleman in question was standing 10 feet away with a huge double sided axe in his hands, because he was chopping wood.

Jim quickly introduced himself and told him that he badly wanted to climb the Beartooth.

The gentleman's demeanour shifted immediately and softened considerably. "Well, you better come inside then son." He said.

The next day Jim was introduced to a visiting german climber who was in town to build a machine at the pulp mill!

What a start to an amazing, inspiring career!!

"Wow, you got food and beer and music and sh#t."
"Yeah, come back and join us."
"Are you guys climbers?"
"well... yeah... kind of..."
"What is Psyche Ledge?"
"You are standing on it."
"Really?"
"This spot used to be where all the climbers camped and hung-out.The locals used to hang out up where the campground is now and burn tires. It wasn't safe for the climbers up there."
"Really?"

Good question, Jim. I like the concept of a social vortex. I like the concept of just a vortex. It is something you can observe in nature at ascending levels. I can observe at Squamish, things that give me a palpable sense of Synergy. You know, where the whole is greater than the sum of it's parts. I don't know, maybe it was the shrooms. Or Daryl. Or Jim Sinclair. Or Will Stanhope. Or Perry, or you Jim. There is definitely some Mojo there.

Dave is very talented.

I am long overdue getting on this thread to let you Squamish folks know that Mimi and me had a fantastic time on Psyche Ledge and that we will be there as often as possible in the future.

Squamish has become the best granite free climbing destination around with all of the hard work that the locals have put into cleaning and climbing. The quality of climbing along with big improvements in camping and the town have made this place truly sweet but not as sweet as the local climbing community. No downside left and it wasn't always that way.

So much talent and character in the mix of folks this year that we will absolutely make this a regular thing just as Wayno has. Great folks one and all. How I missed meeting Hamie I can't quite figure out but hopefully won't next time around.

The Psyche Ledge party has been one of the highlights of the last several years for me. Meeting and hanging out with so many good people north of the border. Squamish seems to me one of the best places on the West Coast to climb and hang. I just wish I had started going there earlier. But that's just me. Most of you won't like it so don't bother. It really sucks. Yankee go home!

'...imaserious ... my mother taught me if I had nothing nice to say I should shut the hell up.

I think Carrigan did climb at Squamish. Mid '70's. I remember a note about the First Australian Ascent of the Grand Wall in the old Eryl Pardoe hut log. Some Canadians had added "Australians eat kangaroos and fxck koala bears". So clearly there wasn't love in the air. I'm not sure where the log book is..........the hut is gone now. Anders might know.

But I remember KC in Yosemite. He climbed right over top of my partner and I on a route on the Cookie. Dude !!! Ya won't make friends doing that ! ...'

Now ya talkin like an aussie !!!! I love it !!!

It was fun while it lasted -- but for us it only lasted until about 8 pm. So, anyone who arrived after that -- sorry we missed you. But it was great to see the early crowd and spend some time with old friends and meet a few new folks.

It looks like the the 4th annual Psyche Ledge Rendezvous came off quite well.
Hats off to Luke and Aislin for organizing things.
I didn't roll in till 21:30 and could only stay an hour as it was a "school night".
The BC Parks compliant propane fire pit added nicely to the ambience.
While the numbers weren't huge the quality of participation was excellent with appearances by some of the usual suspects as well as some newcomers.

Big Mike has outed my closet troubadour with a You Tube first.
Thankfully I didn't butcher Church Street Blues.

It's been suggested a covered timber frame shelter would be appropriate and who knows, maybe we'll have something to celebrate next year?

Yes! Yes! And the signs should feature pictures of a bunch of real-world refugees, most of them still in their teens, passed out on the ground in puddles of vomit, to show the historical significance of the site!

Although there's no evidence today, Psyche Ledge was once the center of the Squamish climbing universe and the gathering place for several generations of climbers.
If we did collaborate on a suitable edifice, I assume a brief history and few photos would be required.
There are a few great photos that capture some of the youthful mayhem.

For the record Eric and Daryl climbed about one hundred feet (not two pitches) of what is now known as Cruel Shoes during their ascent of Up From The Skies. Eric hooked his way off the finger and out of the arch to the first ledge. From there he did a run out stretch of 5.9 up and right to the first sickle.

We should keep the drive alive for year five at Psyche Ledge.

I mentioned the idea of recognizing the cultural/historical significance of Psyche Ledge with a bit of interpretive signage or maybe even small covered shelter to a senior BC Parks staffer.
He frowned and said he was thinking of developing that area for more visitor parking.
That would be different.

I think Luke (Kid Cormier) is officiating this year as I may be away.

ps Fred needs a ride from Squamish to Seattle on Sunday. I understand that someone may be able to get him from Squamish to Vancouver, or the border, but maybe someone from Seattle area will be climbing at Squamish this weekend, and have room to take Fred back?

Reflecting on past attendance, we've had as many as thirty and as few as a dozen show up and the proceedings have always been substantially less than raucous.
