We all climb, and we are all fun hogs.

What's the best peak you've summited?

Mine, unusually, is Katahdin. It's in a remote place with a great knife edge ridge.

I don't know. Each one is good when you are climbing it.
It's a toss up for me. I used to think Cathedral Peak. That last pitch(with the incredible exposure) is fantastic, but I really enjoyed the NW buttress on Tenaya, and the NW ridge on North Peak was hella fun.

torre trieste.
approach: awesome, you get the best view of the mountain.
routes: all are hard classic and long.
summit: no words.
descent: takes time, you get to see most of the mountains.
all in all a great peak to climb.

That's interesting... Round Top was really my first Sierra Peak. Soloed the second class route back in my early backpacking days a gazillion years ago in the summer. The whole thing is pretty loose and in my ultra-n00b state I was rather sketched out., But it was nice being up there, on the remnants of a volcanic core! Love that area!

Best peak: not really climbing, but got up to about 16k on one of the ribs of Machupuchare. I was on a trek and pretty much stopped where the ultra hard core shepherds stop, Beautiful peak. Officially closed, at least then though I saw a couple of people heading in to climb it.

Black Kaweah is my favorite, because it was far and away the hardest thing I'd done at the time with the most glorious result. Even though it was only via a 4th class route, I had never done any technical climbing at the time, or been at altitude, or been on a multi-day backpacking trip, or had a bear steal most of my food on the first night of a 5 night trip, or sat on a perch with a 360 view of the mountains with no signs of civilization... so this was a great life adventure burned into my soul.

Peak bagging is the soul of climbing.

The best peak I've ever climbed was Shiprock, NM with John Middendorf and Cal Hebert
Shiprock is a beautiful and forbidding mountain with many different moods, mythic to the Navajo, a historic route first climbed by legendary pioneering climbers, many different technical challenges along the route with shityourpants exposure, a euphoric view from the summit, with the original summit log signed by a veritable "who's who" in climbing. That it is "technically" off limits only makes it that much more sexy and desirable. and on the day I ascend to the heavens, I will be happy that i was one of the few that climbed Shiprock - the mythic peak the Navajo call Tsé Bitʼaʼí

Riley can't agree more on Shasta. It is a much different feel than stuff in Sierra. It is all by itself, and has a real mountain feel. I love it. Was m first peak and reason why I got into hiking and than climbing. *but if someone told me I hiked Shasta back in the day, I would want to kick their ass. It was a CLIMB!*

One of the most memorable would have to be Ranrapalca, in the Peruvian Andes, already mentioned by Sharperblue. It was the 7th or 8th ascent. We went overland, and it took 153 days from Camp4 to Ranrapalca and back to Camp4. Five months well spent! This was a couple of years before Chouinard's Fun Hogs Expedition to Fitzroy.

The first one I climbed -- White Chief Peak in Mineral King, in 1966, because it got me hooked on climbing. It's only Class-2, but in Converse All-Stars, crossing a snowfield and proceeding without a trail (or a topographic map), this was something new.

I'd hiked in Yosemite since I was old enough to walk, and had been up Half Dome several times (in the days when you had the cables and summit to yourself), but never went anywhere without a trail before. Within a year, I had a pair of Kronhoffers, a 150' Goldline, some pitons, and a love of climbing that's stayed with me to this day.

Bugabump* for whitemtn Matt and Fritz despite their lukewarm attitude about the only summit I bagged in Canada, showing it don't necessarily hafta be Shasta (but the descent was so much less invigorating, still).

I wanted to call a short off-route variant that I did The Ostrich*. In coming on to the exposed E. Face on it, it is quite a gasp moment, since it was hidden till I got to the edge. I led back into the dihedral. 5.8-ish, a legit n00b encounter with SDS* or Sudden Drop-off Syndrome.

Probably a toss up between Changabang, Mt. Huntington and the Great Trango Tower (yeah, I wish).

Don't know if they qualify as peaks, but the Captain and Half Dome are amazing "summits" to me. While I've enjoyed some some summits like Matthes Crest, Bear Creek Spire, Mt. Haeckel, I don't think any of them have come close to the satisfaction of pulling over the top of either of those two.

Edit: Again, not a summit, but Lost Arrow Spire is probably the coolest top out I've had to date.

Cima della Madonna, the one on the right. Obviously need to go back for the Sass Maor.

Naranjo de Bulnes. This photo doesn't do it justice:

Pigeon Spire, the one in the middle. Even though its much easier than its neighbors, the summit is much smaller and the view seemingly better.

Owen over the Grand because of the view it gives of the Grand's north aspect:

The south side of Yosemite Valley has a lot of great peaks with distinct summits. The three Cathedral Rocks are some of my favorites, although I haven't actually been to the summit of Middle. Leaning Tower and Sentinel Rock are another couple great high points with amazing views and great climbing to get there. The hanging valley above Bridalveil Falls is actually one of my favorite pieces of geography anywhere.

Half Dome would rate much higher with me if it wasn't so popular.

Warbonnet in the cirque (WY) is I think one of the most aesthetic peaks to look at from the ground, although I've never climbed on it.

Winter ascent of Glyder Fawr in Snowdonia, in whiteout conditions almost from tent to summit, dead reckoning all they way. Utterly pointless except for the satisfaction.
Years later I saw a beautiful calendar picture of the distinctive summit rock formations, and was astounded by the views that we never had.

The Ben, in winter, because it is The Ben plus I survived the post mortem.
Oh, I didn't have to breathe very hard, either.

lots of great responses in this old thread.

depends what you mean by best, but I am pretty proud of my solo FA of this little doozy. the काठमाडौं Cookie summit block was, if you will, a high point for me.

For me all of them, every single one. That being said, I have prolly been up Crestone Needle with more different partners, and by a greater number of routes than any other peak anywhere.

Nick, what illiterate dyslexic named Crestone ‘Needle’?

Reilly,
Never really thought about it. Crestone Needle does have an ever-so-slightly pointier summit than Crestone Peak, to which it is connected by a ridge with many "needles". Maybe is was named that way just to needle you???

Yes, I forgot about Picacho Del Diablo. It was a milestone for me at 14 or 15 yrs. old and my last Sierra Club peak trip. It was epic with broken bones and rescues (not me).

dee ee, were you on that John Robinson trip?

Just because nobody has mentioned it yet: 3rd Pillar of Mt Dana, haha.

I had a long fascination with El Picacho del Diablo.
