I made a quick "get out of the smoke" trip down to Nevada this weekend!
(S. Idaho is currently a grey-fog of smoke from many fires.)
I went to an island in Nevada: that I haven't been to before.
(high-altitude ecological islands surrounded by desert for thousands of years: maintain plant species that don’t exist in most places in Nevada.)
It wasn’t smoky!
High point of the island is 10,200 Ft. and is occupied by a bunch of communications towers. I was going to find an interesting way up the last 1,000 Ft., but a thunderstorm intervened and drove me off the island.
I did not see Gilligan, or the other survivors of their short cruise, but I liked the island!

Cool!
That's an air compressor though not an engine.
2 stage Ingersoll Rand with water cooled intercooler unbolted and laying across the top and a wound rotor electric motor in the back ground.
there would have been a large leather or rubberized fabric belt from the motor to the compressor and it looks like the flywheel is missing.

TGT! Thanks for the info!
I had not thought about the need for air-compressors to run the drilling machinery, and I have previously looked at mines with pre air-compressor machinery.
Here's the confirming info on the -----machinery.

The intercooler would have been bolted across the two heads, one low pressure, one high pressure. The flywheel between the two crankcases and would be from 4-6 ft in diameter.
I wonder if someone pulled the roof down trying to rig out the intercooler for scrap and gave up?
It would be full of copper or brass tubes.

TGT: I appreciate your knowledge on this now "arcane” subject.
I agree with what you think about previous generations removing iron for “scrap-metal”
I have been amazed at the big chunks of “scrap-iron” that still exist in backcountry mines in Idaho & Nevada. I am amazed at still-having witnessed intact stamp-mills, huge one-lung engines, and miles of mine-cart railroad track.
I thought the World-War II scrap drives would have brought all that stuff to the recycle foundry.
I’m glad it did not.
It is cool to see that stuff “in-situ” today.

RJ! I can share where the island exists!
It is----for sure ----in Northern Nevada!
(do you want to go hunt for the survivors with us?)
I'm certain prehistoric cave-women are dwelling on the island too!

Survival: YES!
Bring those beings in your photo and we will do some prehistoric women hunting. Top of the mountain looks to be limestone with crags & caves for them to hide in.
There was "suspecious" evidence of recent occupation in one of the many old cabins on the island too.
Re South Idaho fire smoke. Could still be bad by 8/22. There is a huge fire about 10-15 miles to the west of COR, but it is very unlikely that it would directly threaten COR.
Here's a Satellite shot of South Idaho taken yesterday. I have circled in red the general area of City of Rocks.

It apparently doesn't contain enough gold to justify ripping it open for an open-pit mine Don't bet on it: Bald Mountain Mine, in the south end of the Ruby Mtns.
I'm guessing about 80 miles south of your find:
Didn't stop to photograph the stream bed with the Skull and Crossbones "Danger, Cyanide" sign.

tha looks kinda like the mine outside lovelock off I 80 You've seen one open pit mine, you've seen them all.
Way south. South of the Ruby Mts NWR (a cool place by the way). South of the Pony Express trail by a few miles. North of 50.

The Kennecott mine in southwest Salt Lake County has swallowed four towns.....so far.
Bingham Canyon, Copperton, Highland Boy and Lark. I'm guessing the re-located Copperton will be the next to go.
My parents drove me up to the town of Bingham Canyon when I was a little tyke. I think in our '47 Buick. About 1954. I still remember the town, clawing to the steep canyon sides, one road up the middle, the bar (my Dad and Mum wanted a drink), ore concentrator still working in the middle of town, the narrow gauge electric railroad, and the mine work already nibbling away at the houses on the edge of town.

The ol timers were quite gentle on the land compared to these days. Shafts and creeks didnt waste the place! Just added character!
The hydraulic placer miners of the 19th century (and sometimes later), destroying hills, forests, creeks, rivers, and fisheries, prove otherwise.

Nevada has the most "ecological islands," but there are a few in Idaho.
South Mountain fits the criteria.
A mining company owns most of the high-ground and is trying to sell the "rip off the top and mine for gold" option to investors.
I hope they fail!

Another island for you.
The Lemhi & Lost River Mountains in S. Central Idaho are geologically similar to the fault-block ranges across Nevada.
Both places have: Sedimentary Rock from pre-biblical times, large outwash plains, and streams that don't drain to the ocean.
The Idaho ranges aren't quite the same ecological islands, but they do have a Nevada feel to them (with less impact from California).
It was a wee-bit smokier this year than on previous trips.
I blush to admit to the forum that my only mountain this year is 10,390 Ft. Big Windy Peak in the Lemhi Range. However, I did not ride an ATV to the summit plateau. I parked my 4-Runner at 10,000 Ft. and defied the local ethic ("it ain't worth going if you can't drive there") by walking a mile to the summit.

Beautiful. Just beautiful I wish I had the time to see more of Nevada like that. Have been seeing more of it on rock hounding trips this summer but there is a lot of Nevada to see

Heidi & I escaped the smoke again and went back to our island in Northern Nevada.
We got there mid-afternoon and explored some more old mining ruins, before settling in to a beautiful evening at 8,600 Ft.
We decided we were going to spend a serious evening of sunset watching. Conditions were optimal with a smoky northern horizon, no bugs, and mild temperatures.
After dinner, we repositioned our chairs to a good viewpoint, supplied ourselves with fine wine and settled in, after the requisite toast to cheating death in the mountains.
Sunrise brought monsoonal clouds and rain by 10:00 AM.
